The website builder does not provide a direct unpublish action for a manual-mode website that is already live. To hide it, you can replace the homepage with a maintenance page, change the connected domain, or duplicate the site and delete the published original. The first option changes what visitors see on the homepage, but it does not make the other pages private.

Choose the workaround that matches what you need

Option What changes for visitors Important limitation
Show a landing page Visitors see the new homepage instead of your usual homepage. Pages hidden from navigation may still open by direct URL and may appear in search results.
Change the connected domain The site is associated with a different domain or subdomain. The platform points to a separate domain-change procedure; the exact steps depend on your setup.
Duplicate, then delete the original Deleting the original takes that published site offline. Duplicate first. The duplicate stays unpublished until you publish it.

These instructions apply to an already-published website in manual mode. An unpublished project is still a draft; it does not need to be taken offline.

Option 1: Put a maintenance page in front

This is the least disruptive choice if you want visitors to see a coming-soon or maintenance message while you continue editing.

  1. In the editor, create or select a landing page, such as “Coming soon.”
  2. Set that page as the homepage.
  3. Open Pages and navigation and move the other pages to Hidden from navigation.
  4. Click Publish to apply the changes to the live site.

This changes the homepage and navigation, but it is not full unpublishing or access control. Someone with a page’s direct URL may still be able to open it, and hidden pages may still appear in search engines. If appropriate, use the page’s separate SEO settings to hide it from search engines; that does not prevent direct access. The site must retain at least one active page.

Option 2: Change the connected domain

If you want the site off its usual public-facing domain, connect it to another domain or a subdomain, such as one used for maintenance or a coming-soon page. You do not need to buy an additional domain for this option if you use a subdomain. When the site is ready, restore the original domain. Follow the platform’s domain-change instructions for your account; the unpublishing guidance does not establish a universal click path.

Option 3: Duplicate the site, then delete the live original

Choose this route if you need the published site taken offline while preserving a separate copy to edit. Deletion is consequential, so make the duplicate first.

Publish and check the result

For edits to a live manual-mode site, click Publish to apply them. After publishing, wait a few minutes and open the site in an incognito or private window to check what visitors can see. The editor’s preview can help you review layout and content before or after publishing, but some functionality is limited in preview, so use the live site to verify the result.
