In RuneScape: Dragonwilds, Tier 5 gathering tools are the Steel Pickaxe and Steel Logging Axe. The progression route reported by current guides is to reach Fellhollow, mine Coal to unlock the Blast Furnace, make Steel Bars, and craft each tool at a Blacksmith’s Bench. Both recipes call for 8 Steel Bars and 6 Willow Logs; the Pickaxe also needs 4 Draconic Leather, while the Logging Axe needs 4 Fine Thread.

What you need before starting

Get the Iron Pickaxe and Iron Logging Axe before pursuing the Steel upgrades. An Iron Logging Axe or better is required to chop Willow Trees, according to Nerd’s Chalk’s September 2026 guide. You will also need access to Fellhollow, where Coal and Willow Logs are found.

Unlock the Blast Furnace in Fellhollow

Mine Coal

Mining Coal in Fellhollow is reported to unlock the Blast Furnace in the build menu. Look for Coal Nodes on cliffs, walls, and rocky surfaces. This unlock detail comes from a current player guide rather than Jagex’s official crafting documentation.

Build the station

The same guide lists the Blast Furnace build materials as 12 Granite, 4 Iron Bars, 2 Draconic Leather, 15 Fire Runes, and 2 Vault Cores. It also says the station must be placed exposed, with no ceiling overhead. Confirm the current build requirements in-game because these details are not specified in Jagex’s general crafting help.

Make Steel Bars, but verify the recipe in-game

Current guides do not agree on the Steel Bar inputs. Nerd’s Chalk describes using 1 Iron Bar and 1 Coal, with a Fuel Pellet loaded as fuel. NoobFeed’s October 2026 guide lists either 3 Iron Ore plus 3 Coal or 1 Iron Bar plus 3 Coal, without resolving the Fuel Pellet question.

Do not rely on a fixed shopping quantity from those conflicting descriptions. Check the Blast Furnace recipe display or Journal before gathering materials. The September guide says Fuel Pellets are made at a Blacksmith’s Bench from 1 Charcoal, 1 Adhesive, and 1 Coarse Animal Fur, and that the ordinary Furnace processes Iron Ore and Charcoal into Iron Bars; verify those displayed recipes in your game as well.

Gather the shared and tool-specific materials

Both Steel tools need Willow Logs, which the September guide places in Fellhollow near Bleakfields Valley. The remaining ingredient depends on which tool you are making:

Tool Shared materials Additional material
Steel Pickaxe 8 Steel Bars and 6 Willow Logs 4 Draconic Leather
Steel Logging Axe 8 Steel Bars and 6 Willow Logs 4 Fine Thread

The recipes are reported consistently by the current guides. Draconic Leather is processed from Dragonwolf Hide, while Fine Thread is processed from Corpse Cotton. Check the Journal for the relevant processing recipes before crafting.

Craft both tools at a Blacksmith’s Bench

  1. Open the Blacksmith’s Bench.
  2. Select the Steel Pickaxe or Steel Logging Axe recipe.
  3. Confirm the required materials in the crafting interface, then craft the tool.

The two tools share their Steel Bar and Willow Log requirements, so choose based on your immediate gathering need and which finishing material you already have.

What Tier 5 tools let you do

The Steel Pickaxe and Steel Logging Axe expand the nodes you can mine and the trees you can chop, supporting further map progression. The available guides do not provide a complete node-by-node compatibility list, so check a specific node in-game rather than assuming every new resource is accessible with these tools.

Check recipes and repair worn tools

Jagex’s official Crafting help says the crafting interface shows resource requirements and relevant item stats, and that recipes can be reviewed in the Journal. The help page covers general crafting and repair behavior, not these Tier 5 recipes or Blast Furnace requirements.

Tools wear out with use and eventually break. To restore one, take it to a Crafting Table and switch to Repair mode, following Jagex’s documented workflow.
