In World of Warcraft, you start a quest by interacting with a quest giver and accepting the task, then use its objectives, the map, and the quest log to complete and track it. When it is finished, turn it in to the quest giver if the game does not complete it automatically. If a quest will not unlock or an objective will not update, check its prerequisites and reread the full quest text.
Start with the new-player experience
Blizzard’s February 25, 2026 new-player guide says a new character begins in Exile’s Reach. The opening sequence introduces movement, interacting with non-player characters (NPCs), using starter class abilities, and managing inventory.
After Exile’s Reach, that guide directs players into Dragonflight story content. It says that after reaching level 10, players can continue into Dragonflight or speak with Chromie in a capital city to choose a Timewalking Campaign. These are the progression directions described in Blizzard’s 2026 guide; later game updates may change them.
How to accept and complete a quest
- Find a quest giver. Look for an NPC offering a quest and interact with them. Blizzard’s legacy starter walkthrough uses a yellow exclamation point to indicate an available quest. Because that walkthrough is old, treat the icon as general orientation and follow the prompts in your current client.
- Read the offer before accepting. Check what the quest asks you to do and accept it if you want to take it on. Note any named targets, items, locations, or extra conditions in the description.
- Use the objectives and map. Follow the quest’s objective list to the relevant area, then do the action requested. Reaching a location or defeating an enemy may not be enough if the quest has an additional condition.
- Track the quest. Open the map with M to review quests underway and their status, as described in Blizzard’s solo-adventure guide. The 2024 interface update describes a quest-log selector for choosing quests to track and viewing more quest information. A legacy walkthrough gives L as the quest-log key; key bindings and interface details can differ, so use your current client’s controls if that shortcut does not work.
- Complete the stated objective. Watch the objective list for progress. If it does not update, reread the entire quest description: Blizzard’s starting-zone guidance notes that some tasks have conditions not obvious from the short objective summary.
- Turn it in. Follow an in-field completion prompt if one appears. Otherwise, return to the quest giver. Blizzard’s older walkthrough uses a yellow question mark for a quest ready to turn in; the 2024 interface guide also describes a “Turn In” map category.
Read the map categories to choose what to do next
The 2024 interface update describes map categories that help distinguish a quest’s role. Use the category alongside the quest description rather than assuming every available task advances the main story.

Why a quest may not unlock
A visible marker does not always mean you can accept a quest immediately. Blizzard’s older starting-zone tutorial says a silver exclamation point can indicate that a higher level or completion of other objectives is required. As that explanation comes from a legacy zone guide, it should not be treated as a complete description of every current quest gate.
If a quest is unavailable, check its description, your campaign progress, the map, and any stated prerequisites. A level requirement or unfinished earlier objective may explain why it cannot be accepted.

Fix an objective that will not update
- Reread the complete quest description, not just the short objective summary.
- Confirm you are doing the specified action in the right place and on the right target.
- Look for a secondary condition, such as collecting an item or interacting with something, rather than only reaching an area or defeating an enemy.
- Check the map and quest log to confirm you are tracking the quest you intend to complete.
For marker meanings or controls that do not match your installed client, follow its current prompts and in-game help.
Free-trial access and the level 20 threshold
Blizzard’s February 25, 2026 new-player guide states that a Free Trial includes playable content, quests, and level 20 Dungeons through level 20; a subscription or game time is required for access beyond level 20. This is an access threshold stated in that dated guide, not a general rule about how many quests are available. Check Blizzard’s current account information for the latest access terms.
