To unlock a Verizon Samsung phone, first check when and how it was purchased and whether it is on standard monthly service or prepaid. Under Verizon’s updated policy, many postpaid phones bought directly from Verizon unlock automatically after full retail payment or full financing payoff; prepaid phones follow a separate paid-service timeline. Phones activated before the policy transition may still qualify under Verizon’s former 60-day rule. Even after unlocking, your Galaxy may not support every feature or band on another carrier.

Check which Verizon unlock rule applies

Start by identifying whether the Galaxy was purchased directly from Verizon or from another seller, whether the line is standard monthly service or prepaid, and the device’s purchase and activation dates. Verizon’s updated device-unlocking policy is effective February 18, 2026; its FAQ identifies January 27, 2026, as the transition date for the new rules. The policy may differ for retailer purchases and special account types, so confirm your device with Verizon if its history is unclear.

Device and service Verizon’s stated rule
Verizon-purchased device on standard monthly service, activated on or after January 27, 2026 Under the updated policy, Verizon says it unlocks automatically when the device is bought at full retail price or its financing balance is paid in full. A secure payment method is required for immediate unlocking after payoff. If you pay with a Verizon Gift Card, Verizon says it may delay unlocking for 35 days while it verifies the funds. Verizon’s updated policy
Verizon-purchased device on standard monthly service, activated before January 27, 2026 Verizon says the former policy applies: the device unlocked automatically after 60 days. This legacy rule does not apply to every newer device. Verizon’s device-locking FAQ
Verizon-purchased prepaid device under the updated policy Verizon’s policy says the device unlocks after 365 days of paid and active service. Its FAQ describes requesting an unlock after 365 days from purchase and 12 months of paid service; suspended days do not count. If those dates do not line up for your account, ask Verizon to verify the device’s eligibility. Verizon’s updated policy and FAQ

Verizon says it will not unlock devices reported lost or stolen until they are cleared; its FAQ also excludes devices flagged for fraud. Paying off a balance does not override those restrictions.

What to do if your phone should be eligible

  1. Confirm the device history. Check the purchase or activation date, service type, and whether the phone was bought from Verizon. For a financed phone, check that the device balance—not just the monthly service bill—is fully paid.
  2. Check the payment method and account status. After payoff, Verizon requires a secure payment method for immediate unlocking under the updated policy. If a Verizon Gift Card was used, account for the stated 35-day funds-verification delay.
  3. Ask Verizon to verify the device. Contact Verizon through your account or support and ask whether the specific phone is eligible and whether any lost, stolen, or fraud flag or payment verification is holding up the unlock. Verizon’s consumer policy describes automatic unlocking for eligible standard-monthly-service devices; do not assume that manually entering a code is the normal procedure.
  4. Follow the destination carrier’s activation instructions. Once Verizon confirms the restriction is removed, use the other carrier’s instructions for its physical SIM or eSIM. Samsung advises contacting the carrier before deactivating service and moving to a new carrier. Samsung’s carrier-transfer guidance

Special cases: business and military devices

Verizon describes separate terms for business devices and deployed military customers, rather than treating them as ordinary consumer unlock cases. Business-device eligibility can depend on full retail payment or payoff, the end of the line term, or payment of a termination fee under the applicable agreement. For deployed military customers, Verizon describes an accommodation after verification and 60 days active in good standing following suspension. Check the agreement or ask Verizon to confirm the applicable route for the specific account.

Unlocked does not mean compatible with every carrier

Verizon defines unlocking as disabling software that prevents a device designed for one carrier from being activated on another. Removing that restriction does not certify that the phone supports another carrier’s network bands, coverage, or features. Verizon warns that differences in network technology can limit functionality or prevent the phone from working on another network. Samsung also notes that branding, network configuration, carrier features, and system apps can change when you insert a new carrier SIM or add an eSIM.

  • Give the destination carrier the exact Galaxy model and IMEI and ask it to check compatibility and supported features.
  • Confirm that the carrier supports the phone’s specific eSIM capability before trying to activate an eSIM.
  • Do not assume that an unlocked status guarantees coverage, calling features, or successful activation on every network.

Samsung says carriers—not Samsung—set unlock requirements. Samsung’s guidance on moving a Galaxy to another carrier explains why it is useful to check with both Verizon about the lock and the new carrier about compatibility.

Why does my Samsung say “SIM Not Supported”?

Verizon’s FAQ lists “SIM Not Supported” as a lock indicator, though the exact message can vary by manufacturer. First distinguish a carrier-lock message from a SIM recognition or activation problem. If Verizon confirms the phone is still locked, SIM troubleshooting will not remove the carrier restriction; resolve eligibility with Verizon. If Verizon confirms it is unlocked, or the phone does not appear to recognize the SIM, try Samsung’s SIM checks.

Check whether the phone detects the SIM

  1. Open Settings > About phone > Status information > SIM card status. Samsung says to check whether a carrier appears under Network. The labels may vary by Galaxy model and software version.
  2. Ask your carrier whether SIM protection is enabled, then restart the phone and test the SIM again.
  3. Reset mobile network settings and run SIM diagnostics in Samsung Members. These steps address SIM or network detection; they do not unlock a device that remains carrier-locked.

For additional model-specific steps, see Samsung’s SIM card detection troubleshooting guide. If you are switching to an eSIM, follow the carrier’s setup instructions and confirm support for your exact Galaxy model. Samsung’s Galaxy SIM card guidance covers SIM and eSIM considerations.
