You can use your Samsung phone’s IMEI to identify the device when asking its original carrier to unlock it, but the IMEI itself does not unlock the phone. Start by finding the carrier that locked or sold the device, check that carrier’s eligibility rules, and submit its official request. The examples below cover major U.S. carriers; rules differ by country and carrier.
What the IMEI does—and what it cannot do
Samsung describes the IMEI as one of the identifiers for a Galaxy phone or tablet. A carrier can use it to look up the device and check whether it qualifies for unlocking. The unlock is a carrier-administered action, not a code generated simply by knowing the IMEI. See Samsung’s explanation of IMEI and serial numbers.
Be cautious of websites promising to unlock any Samsung phone with an IMEI alone. The official carrier processes below make eligibility and carrier processing central; the sources cited here do not establish that an IMEI-only service can unlock every device. Submit your IMEI through the carrier’s authenticated request channel, not in a public post.

Find your Samsung phone’s IMEI
- Use Settings: Open Settings > About phone and note the IMEI.
- Try the dial code: Dial
*#06#if your carrier and model support it. - Check another record: The phone’s packaging, purchase documents, carrier account, or Samsung Members may also show the number.
Samsung notes that procedures and available information can vary by model, software, and carrier. If the phone is used or was purchased from someone else, ask the original carrier to verify the IMEI and the device’s eligibility.

Use the original carrier’s official unlock process
Identify the country and the carrier that sold or locked the phone before requesting an unlock. If your carrier is not listed below, use that carrier’s own current policy; the U.S. examples are not universal.
AT&T
Use AT&T’s device unlock portal to submit or check a request. Its process asks for a phone number or IMEI. AT&T also says eligible Samsung devices that meet its criteria should unlock automatically, but verify the current rules and the status of your specific device on its unlock support page. Automatic unlocking is not a guarantee before the carrier confirms eligibility.

T-Mobile
Check T-Mobile’s SIM unlock policy for the device and account requirements. T-Mobile says it will automatically and remotely unlock an eligible device within two business days after it becomes eligible, if the device supports remote unlocking. Its policy may change, so use the live policy for the current criteria.
Verizon
Review Verizon’s device unlocking policy and contact Verizon if you need the status of a particular phone. The policy’s account and device conditions determine what applies; do not assume another carrier’s rules or timing apply to Verizon devices.

What happens after the carrier approves the unlock?
Follow the carrier’s instructions, which may depend on the model and whether the phone supports remote unlocking. Then test a SIM or eSIM from the carrier you intend to use. Confirm that calls, texts, and mobile data work; if they do not, ask the destination carrier to check the exact Samsung model and its network compatibility.
An unlocked phone is not guaranteed to work fully—or at all—on every network. Verizon specifically warns that differences in network technologies may limit an unlocked device’s functionality on another carrier. Check compatibility with the destination carrier rather than treating “unlocked” as a service guarantee.

Carrier lock or SIM PIN/PUK?
A carrier-locked phone and a SIM card locked by a PIN or PUK are different problems. If the phone asks for a SIM PIN or PUK, contact the SIM’s carrier for the correct instructions; a carrier-unlock request is not a substitute. Samsung distinguishes SIM-card unlocking from unlocking the device, and the steps depend on the model and carrier. See Samsung’s support guidance.
