If you forgot your Mac login password, you may be able to reset it without erasing the Mac. You cannot simply bypass the password, and an Apple Account password is not the same as a Mac login password. If the screen says Activation Lock, the Mac instead requires the Apple Account linked to it or its device passcode.
First identify which lock is stopping you
Look at the screen before choosing a recovery method. A normal user login, a FileVault recovery prompt, and Activation Lock require different credentials and have different consequences.
| Screen or situation | Credential or path | Data impact | Mac type |
|---|---|---|---|
| Normal login window | Mac user-account password; if forgotten, use the offered reset flow | Resetting the password may preserve data | Apple silicon or Intel |
| FileVault asks for a recovery method | Configured Apple Account or FileVault recovery key | Access depends on a valid recovery method | Apple silicon or Intel |
| Recovery password-reset utility | Use an available approved reset option | Reset workflow; erasure is a separate last resort | Apple silicon or Intel |
| Activation Lock | Apple Account linked to the Mac or its device passcode | Erasing alone does not clear the ownership lock | Apple silicon or Intel |
| Intel Mac cannot start Recovery | A firmware password may be required | Separate from the local login password | Intel only |
Apple calls Apple ID an Apple Account. The password you use at the Mac login window is for a local Mac user account; it is not automatically the Apple Account password.
Reset a forgotten password at the login window
- At the login window, select your user and enter a password carefully. If it is rejected, look for a question mark beside the password field or a reset message. Apple says the reset option may appear after up to three attempts.
- Choose the reset option shown on screen. Depending on your Mac’s setup, it may offer your Apple Account, a FileVault recovery key, or another approved reset path.
- Follow the prompts to set a new login password, then restart or sign in as instructed.
Apple states that you can’t disable the login password or log in without it, but you might be able to reset it. Available choices depend on how the Mac and account were configured. See Apple’s official password-reset instructions.

Use macOS Recovery if login-window reset is unavailable
Recovery provides another Apple-supported route to the password-reset workflow. The startup steps differ by Mac architecture.
Apple silicon Mac
- Shut down the Mac.
- Press and hold the power button until startup options appear.
- Select Options, then select Continue to enter macOS Recovery.
- If offered, choose Forgot all passwords? and follow the prompts. If that option is not shown, use Recovery’s password-reset utility.
Intel Mac
- Shut down the Mac.
- Start it in macOS Recovery using the Intel Mac Recovery startup procedure described by Apple.
- Choose Forgot all passwords? if it appears, or open the password-reset utility in Recovery.
In Recovery, the Terminal command resetpassword opens Apple’s reset workflow. It does not remove Activation Lock or an Intel firmware password. Apple documents Recovery startup for Apple silicon and Intel Macs; available screens can vary by macOS version.

When FileVault asks for a recovery key
FileVault protects the Mac’s data by encrypting its disk. If the reset process asks for a FileVault recovery key, use the key configured for that Mac or the Apple Account recovery option offered by the screen. Apple describes the FileVault key as a 24-character alphanumeric code; it is different from an Apple Account recovery key.
On macOS Tahoe 26 or later, Apple says the FileVault recovery key may be stored in the Passwords app on another device signed in to the same Apple Account. Check there if you previously saved it. Apple warns that if FileVault is on, you cannot reset the login password, and you have also lost the recovery key, you will not be able to log in and your files and settings will be lost permanently. Details are in Apple’s FileVault recovery-key guidance.

If the Mac says Activation Lock
Activation Lock is an ownership protection, not a forgotten local login password. Apple requires the Apple Account linked to the Mac or the device passcode before Find My can be turned off, the Mac erased, or the Mac reactivated. Resetting a local password—or erasing and reinstalling macOS—does not substitute for that credential.
If the Mac belongs to you, use the linked account or device passcode when prompted. If you acquired the Mac from someone else, ask the previous owner to remove it from their account. Apple’s Activation Lock guidance explains the supported requirements. Generic bypass tools and accessories are not an Apple-supported solution.

Erase the Mac only as a last resort
If no password-reset method works, Recovery may offer Erase Mac. This is destructive: Apple says erasing permanently removes every user account, its password, and the data on the Mac. Do not choose it unless you accept losing data that is not otherwise recoverable.

Keep Intel firmware passwords separate from login passwords
On an Intel Mac, a firmware password can restrict starting from macOS Recovery or another disk. It is separate from your user-account login password, so resetting the latter will not necessarily get you into Recovery. Apple describes this behavior in its firmware-password support article. If the Mac is managed by an organization, contact its administrator for the applicable recovery route.
