Desmond Bane is more than a new scoring option for Orlando: he gives the Magic a mobile shooter who can create a shot or make a useful read when a possession shifts to him. The intended fit is to ease some of the offensive load on Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner, while making the attack harder to defend when Bane moves without the ball.

Why Orlando brought Bane in

Orlando announced on June 15, 2025, that it had acquired Bane from Memphis in exchange for Cole Anthony, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and multiple future first-round assets, including swap rights. The Magic’s president of basketball operations, Jeff Weltman, described the team’s rationale as adding Bane’s “shooting, IQ and wide-ranging skill set” to help it take a step forward. That is the club’s stated expectation, not proof of what the fit would produce.

The offensive need was clear in the 2024–25 context. Orlando ranked 27th in offensive rating and second in defensive rating, according to NBA.com’s 2025–26 season preview. The challenge was to add offense without losing the defensive strength that had made the team successful.

What Bane changes when he does not have the ball

NBA.com senior stats analyst John Schuhmann’s August 18, 2025 film study describes Orlando’s 2024–25 offense as short on movement. Using Second Spectrum tracking, the study says the Magic ranked 27th in passes per 24 minutes of possession, with 308, and 26th in player distance traveled, at 10.7 miles per 24 minutes of possession.

That matters because a defense can load up on a ball handler when teammates stand still. Bane can move away from the play, make his defender follow him, then become available for a pass or open space for a teammate’s drive. Memphis offered a contrasting movement profile in 2024–25: it ranked first in player movement, at 12.2 miles per 24 minutes of possession. With Bane on court, he traveled 2.4 miles per 24 minutes of Memphis possession—more than any Orlando player, according to the study.

Movement alone does not guarantee a better offense. Its value is that it can create a passing window, pull a defender away from the ball, or force the defense to react before Banchero or Wagner attacks.

How Bane can fit beside Banchero and Wagner

When Banchero or Wagner initiates a possession, Bane can work toward a catch-and-shoot opportunity, attack a closeout, or draw a defender away from the action. That gives Orlando more ways to turn a defensive rotation into an advantage rather than asking its main creators to beat a set defense on their own.

The need for that help is visible in the same film study’s account of Banchero’s isolation workload. Across the 2024–25 regular season and playoffs, Banchero led the league with 19.4 isolations per 100 possessions. When one of those isolations directly led to a shot, turnover or trip to the line, Orlando scored 0.97 points per chance. Bane’s off-ball movement offers a way to change the picture around those possessions; it does not mean Banchero must stop creating.

He is a shooter, but not only a spot-up shooter

Bane can threaten a defense both after a pass and with the ball in his hands. Schuhmann’s study says his true shooting percentage stayed between 58.9% and 60.6% in each of his first five NBA seasons, even as the share of his field goals that were assisted declined. In 2024–25, the study lists 19.2 points per game, 60.0% true shooting and 49.5% of field goals assisted.

That mix is useful for Orlando: Bane can take a catch-and-shoot look, but a defender cannot assume that denying him the ball ends his threat. He can also attack off the dribble and make pick-and-roll reads, including finding an open shooter on the weak side. The film study supports viewing him as a secondary creator, not as a full-time point guard or a replacement for the team’s lead playmaking.

What his playmaking adds—and what it does not

Bane’s assists per 36 minutes rose from 2.8 as a rookie to 6.0 in 2024–25, according to the NBA.com analysis. That progression supports the idea that he can take on more creation when a possession calls for it. It does not establish that he should run the offense on every possession.

In practical terms, Bane can help keep a possession alive when the first action is covered: handle a pick-and-roll, read the defense and deliver the ball to an open teammate. Orlando still benefits most when that skill complements, rather than displaces, Banchero’s and Wagner’s primary creation.

Why transition is another part of the fit

Bane also brings experience pushing the ball in transition. Memphis averaged 32.8 transition points per game in 2024–25, a total Schuhmann’s analysis—citing Synergy—described as the highest in 21 years of Synergy tracking. Orlando averaged 18.8 transition points per game, ranking 26th, despite ranking sixth in steals. These are season-specific comparisons, not current-season totals.

The opportunity is straightforward: a steal or rebound can become a quick attack before the defense is set, with Bane advancing the ball rather than waiting for a half-court play to develop. Whether Orlando turns that possibility into better results depends on execution and the team’s later season performance; the preseason tactical case alone cannot establish the outcome.

How to read the role projection

The August 2025 film study makes a tactical case based on Bane’s Memphis profile and Orlando’s 2024–25 needs. It helps explain why the Magic added him, but it is not a measurement of his full 2025–26 impact. NBA.com’s player profile records later Orlando playoff appearances, including 25 points and seven made threes against Detroit on April 25, 2026, and 16 points in Game 7 on May 3, 2026. Those dated game results demonstrate that he subsequently played for Orlando; they do not, by themselves, establish his season averages or isolate how his role changed the offense.
