Missing lines, faint text, or a color absent from a print can indicate clogged nozzles, but they do not prove that dried ink is the cause. First print the printer’s nozzle-check pattern; if it shows gaps or faint sections, use the cleaning procedure in the manual for your exact model. Cleaning consumes ink, so do not run it when the pattern is already clear.
Check whether the print head is actually clogged
Find the printer’s exact model number and use its manual or manufacturer utility to print a nozzle check. The pattern helps separate a nozzle problem from other print-quality issues. Epson advises checking for clogged nozzles before cleaning so you do not clean unnecessarily: Epson Print Head Maintenance.
On the Epson M1180, gaps or faint sections in the pattern point to cleaning; a pattern without gaps is considered clean. If almost the entire pattern is missing, that model’s manual points to Power Cleaning. These interpretations are specific to the M1180; follow your own printer’s instructions for reading its test pattern. Epson M1180 User’s Guide.

Before starting a cleaning cycle, check the displayed or visible ink level and look for an error message. Some printers will not clean if ink is low or depleted. Epson’s cartridge guidance says a cartridge may need replacement before cleaning; its tank-printer guidance advises refilling when low ink prevents cleaning. Requirements vary by model, so check the manual and use only an ink cartridge or pack compatible with that printer. Replacing ink may enable cleaning, but it is not itself a way to unclog nozzles. Run the printer’s ordinary cleaning cycle

Open the maintenance or print-quality controls described in your printer’s manual. Depending on the model, these may be available on the control panel or through the manufacturer’s computer utility.

Choose the built-in print-head or nozzle cleaning function. Do not use button sequences copied from a different printer model.

Let the cycle finish without turning off the printer or opening its cover if the manual warns against doing so. Epson’s M1180 guide gives that warning for its cleaning cycle. Epson M1180 User’s Guide.

Print another nozzle check. Stop cleaning when the pattern is clear; repeated cycles consume ink.

Use stronger cleaning only when the manual calls for it
Power Cleaning or a similarly named intensive procedure is for persistent problems, not a first step. It can use substantially more ink than ordinary cleaning. Epson’s M1180 instructions provide a model-specific example: try regular cleaning up to three times, then wait at least six hours before trying again. If the problem remains, its sequence proceeds to Power Cleaning and then Epson support. The M1180 guide requires at least one-third tank level before Power Cleaning and says to wait at least 12 hours before another Power Cleaning. Other models may have different cycle limits, ink thresholds, waits, and follow-up steps. Read the exact model’s instructions before starting an intensive cycle. In one Epson large-format guide, cleaning and Power Cleaning draw ink from all cartridges, even when printing mainly in black and white, and repeated cleaning can fill maintenance boxes. Know when to stop and get help
If the manufacturer’s prescribed cleaning sequence does not restore the nozzle pattern, stop repeating cycles and follow the manual’s escalation advice. For certain large-format Epson models, the guidance is to turn the printer off and leave it overnight after Power Cleaning; if nozzles remain clogged, contact Epson. Do not assume that soaking, flushing, or syringing the print head is safe: printer designs differ, and any manual procedure should come from the instructions for the exact model. Avoid buying ink unless the printer indicates it is low or the manufacturer’s cleaning procedure requires it.
