A blocked website can be caused by your browser or device, a network policy, your internet provider, or the website itself. The right fix depends on which layer is refusing the connection: start with the exact error, test a few safe alternatives, then contact whoever controls the restriction. A VPN may help with some network-level problems, but it cannot guarantee access or override a website’s decision.
1. Identify the error before changing settings
Write down the exact message or code, the URL, the browser and device you are using, and when the problem started. Then open another website. If nothing loads, the issue may be your connection rather than that particular site.
Browser errors are clues, not proof of a cause. Chrome distinguishes, for example, a hostname that cannot be resolved, a disconnected device, a timeout, a reset connection, and a certificate warning. A timeout can reflect a slow connection or a busy website; a reset may involve an unstable connection, a VPN, or security software. 2. Rule out browser and device problems
- Try another browser or a private window. If the site loads there, the issue may involve a browser extension, stored site data, or a sign-in session.
- Check extensions and local security tools. If an extension seems responsible, disable that extension briefly as a diagnostic test, then restore it or remove it if appropriate. Do not leave antivirus or firewall protections turned off to get a page to load.
- Check the site’s sign-in state. If the site reports an authorization problem, sign in again or clear that site’s stored data rather than changing network settings.
- Verify date and time for certificate or authentication errors. Incorrect device time can interfere with secure connections. Do not bypass certificate warnings or install certificates from unknown sources.

3. Compare networks and check for a Wi-Fi sign-in page
If available, try the same site over mobile data or another trusted network. If it works there, that points toward a difference involving your usual network or internet provider; it does not by itself establish that someone intentionally censored the site.
On café, hotel, airport, or other public Wi-Fi, check whether a sign-in or terms-acceptance page is required. Until that captive portal is completed, ordinary websites may not load as expected. If you confirm the restriction is on a managed school or work network, ask its administrator. 4. Work out who controls the restriction

DNS filtering applies policies to domain lookups and can serve security or organizational policy purposes. Cloudflare: What is DNS filtering? 5. Decide whether a VPN fits the problem
A VPN sends your connection through a VPN server instead of directly from your network to the destination. Common uses include business remote access, protection on public Wi-Fi, and addressing some forms of network-level interference. That makes a VPN a possible diagnostic or remedy for some network-path problems—not a universal way to unblock websites. Cloudflare: What is a VPN?

- A VPN cannot override a website owner’s access policy, and the site may block or refuse VPN traffic.
- VPN features vary by product, country, and supported device. Google says VPN by Google on supported Pixel devices cannot change your IP location to access content unavailable in your region. - Before choosing a VPN, verify its current availability where you live, supported devices, privacy practices, connection reliability, and terms. No provider or price is established here, and no VPN can promise that a particular site will load.
6. Use public Wi-Fi without unnecessary alarm
The Federal Trade Commission says, “Because of the widespread use of encryption, connecting through a public Wi-Fi network is usually safe.” Check for HTTPS or the browser’s lock indicator before entering sensitive information.
