For a Greek letter inside an equation, type Delta for uppercase Δ or delta for lowercase δ, then press Space. The commands are case-sensitive. In Word on Windows, you can also type the Unicode value 0394 or 03B4 and press Alt+X to convert it to Δ or δ.
Choose the right method for where the symbol belongs
| Situation | Method | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Delta in an equation | Type Delta or delta, then press Space |
Use matching capitalization. Math AutoCorrect works in Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and OneNote on Windows and Mac. Microsoft’s keyboard guide. |
| Create a new equation on Windows | In Word, PowerPoint, or OneNote, press Alt+=, then enter the command and Space |
The shortcut opens an equation context in those apps on Windows; it is not a universal Office shortcut. For Excel, Microsoft’s keyboard guide directs users to Insert > Symbols > Equation. Microsoft’s keyboard guide. |
| Convert a code in Word on Windows | Type 0394 or 03B4, then press Alt+X |
Type the hexadecimal code without the U+ prefix. Microsoft’s keyboard guide. |
| Insert delta as ordinary text | Use Insert > Symbol or More Symbols in Word | Choose a font that includes the glyph. Microsoft’s Word symbol guidance. |
| Browse equation symbols | Insert > Equation > Insert New Equation, then Equation Symbols > Greek Letters > Uppercase or Lowercase | Use this when you want to choose the character from the equation symbol list. Microsoft’s equation guidance. |
Type Δ or δ in an equation
- Open an equation. In Word, PowerPoint, or OneNote for Windows, press
Alt+=. In other app or platform combinations, use that app’s equation insertion command. - Enter the case-matched command. Type
Deltafor Δ ordeltafor δ. - Convert the command. Press Space. The space acts as a delimiter that tells Math AutoCorrect to convert the command; without it, the text may remain as typed.
Microsoft documents these Math AutoCorrect commands for Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and OneNote on Windows and Mac. The equation-creation shortcut depends on the app and operating system, so do not assume Alt+= works everywhere. See Microsoft’s keyboard guide for platform-specific shortcuts.
Use Word’s Unicode conversion shortcut
In Word for Windows, enter the hexadecimal Unicode value without the U+ prefix, then press Alt+X:

0394converts to uppercase delta, Δ (U+0394).03B4converts to lowercase delta, δ (U+03B4).
If the code is next to other hexadecimal characters, select only the code before pressing Alt+X, so Word does not include adjacent text in the conversion. This is a Word-specific keyboard route, rather than a general shortcut for every Office app. Microsoft documents the conversion workflow.

When you need Δ or δ in a sentence, label, or other non-equation text, use Word’s Insert > Symbol or More Symbols picker. Select the desired Greek letter and a font that contains its glyph. Symbol availability and appearance depend on the font; if the character is missing or displays incorrectly, try a font with Greek coverage. Microsoft’s Word symbol guidance.
Browse the Greek letters in an equation
In Word, choose Insert > Equation > Insert New Equation. In the equation tools, open Equation Symbols, then Greek Letters, and select Uppercase or Lowercase to find the corresponding delta. Microsoft’s equation guidance.

Move equations between Office apps
Word supports both UnicodeMath and LaTeX linear equation formats. Other Office applications support UnicodeMath linear format, which is the more consistent choice when moving equation input among Office apps. Microsoft 365 Word, Excel, and PowerPoint can convert supported LaTeX math notation to and from Office Math Markup Language (OMML); the LaTeX support is for supported notation, not every possible command. Microsoft’s equation-format overview and LaTeX and OMML conversion details.
