An old MacBook can work as a basic home file server. macOS File Sharing can publish selected folders over SMB (Server Message Block), so Windows PCs and other SMB-capable devices on your home network can open them. It is a low-cost, home-scale setup. It is not an appliance: it will not offer the uptime, redundancy, or speed of a dedicated NAS, and a shared folder on a laptop is not a backup.
What this setup does and does not give you
- It does: share chosen folders on your local network, control which accounts can read or change them, and let Windows clients connect over SMB.
- It does not: provide RAID, automatic redundancy, or guaranteed availability. Apple’s documentation for these steps does not establish any of those properties for a shared folder.
- It depends on the laptop: the Mac must be awake, on your network, and running when someone connects. Sleep behavior is covered below.
Before you start
- Note your macOS version and MacBook model. Apple’s settings and available options can vary with hardware and macOS version, and the steps below use the System Settings layout in current macOS releases.
- Decide which folder will hold shared files. A dedicated folder, such as one named Shared at the top of your home folder, is easier to manage than sharing an entire drive.
- List each person and device that needs access, and whether each needs to read only, read and write, or nothing at all.
- Decide whether the MacBook will connect by Wi-Fi or by a wired Ethernet adapter, and keep it plugged into power if it will run as a server.
Step 1: Turn on File Sharing and add a folder
- Open System Settings and select General, then Sharing.
- Select File Sharing and switch it on.
- Under Shared Folders, click the + button, choose your dedicated folder, and click Add.
- Leave the folder’s access list for the next step; do not add broader access yet.
Apple’s guide “Set up file sharing on Mac” describes selected-folder sharing. Avoid giving every user full-disk access as a convenience setting. Administrators can reach all volumes on the Mac, but folder-level controls let you limit everyone else.
Step 2: Give each user the smallest access they need
In the Users list for the shared folder, set each account to one of Apple’s four access levels:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Access level | What it allows | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Read & Write | Open, change, add, and delete files in the folder | Your own account or a household member who edits shared files |
| Read Only | Open and copy files, without changing them | Reference archives, media libraries, or family members who only view |
| Write Only | Add files to the folder without seeing existing contents | Drop-box style uploads from a device you do not fully trust |
| No Access | Blocks the account from the folder | Accounts that should not see it, including guest access you do not need |
Use a named account for each person rather than a shared login, so you can remove one user without changing passwords for everyone else. Avoid guest access unless you deliberately need it.

Step 3: Enable SMB for Windows clients
Apple’s guide “Share Mac files with Windows users” describes this route. Windows clients connect over SMB, so you turn SMB on for the specific accounts that need it.
- In System Settings, go to General > Sharing > File Sharing and select the Options button (the information button beside File Sharing).
- Turn on Share files and folders using SMB.
- In the Windows File Sharing list, turn on only the Mac user accounts that Windows clients will use. Enter that account’s password when prompted.
- Note the Mac’s network address shown in the File Sharing information. Give that address and the account’s username and password to each Windows user.
Apple cautions that passwords used for Windows sharing may be stored less securely than other macOS credentials. When an account is no longer needed for Windows access, turn its Windows File Sharing option off.

Step 4: Plan for sleep and network wake
A laptop that goes to sleep stops serving files. Apple provides a Wake for network access setting under System Settings > Battery > Options, which allows the Mac to wake for shared services when the hardware and network support it. Whether this works depends on your Mac model, your router, and your network configuration, so test it rather than assuming it works.

Keeping the MacBook awake all day is a trade-off between availability and battery or power use, and Apple does not publish a power figure for this use.

- High capacity in a small enclosure – The small, lightweight design offers up to 6TB* capacity, making WD Elements portable hard drives the ideal companion for consumers on the go.
- Plug-and-play expandability
- Vast capacities up to 6TB[1] to store your photos, videos, music, important documents and more
- SuperSpeed USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps)
Step 5: Add an external drive only if you need more space
An external USB hard drive can add shared capacity. Before you buy or connect one, check the following for your exact MacBook and drive:
- The drive’s connector matches a free port on your MacBook, or a compatible adapter is available.
- The drive’s filesystem is supported by macOS for the read and write access you need.
- The drive is powered properly; many portable drives draw power from the USB port.
Apple’s documentation does not establish recommended capacities, transfer rates, or specific drive models for this use, so treat any particular drive as something to verify, not something this guide endorses.

- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop. Reformatting may be required for Mac
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Step 6: Test access and set up a separate backup
- From a second device, connect to the Mac using its network address and a user account you set up.
- Open a file, change it, and confirm the change saves. Then try the same from an account with Read Only access, which should block changes.
- Disconnect and reconnect after the Mac sleeps and wakes to confirm the behavior you expect.
For backups, macOS can share a folder as a Time Machine backup destination with an optional size limit, which is a separate feature from ordinary file sharing. Use a second copy of important files on another drive or service so that a single laptop failure or drive failure does not remove your only copy.
Security limits to respect
- Keep SMB on your home network. Do not expose it directly to the public internet. Apple’s sharing guides describe local access and do not include a remote-access hardening guide.
- Share specific folders rather than whole drives, and use named accounts with the smallest access level.
- Use the option to require SMB-encrypted connections if your clients support it. Apple lists this among File Sharing options.
- Turn off Windows File Sharing for any account you no longer use over SMB.
Wired or Wi-Fi, and SMB performance
Choose the connection that suits the room the Mac sits in. A wired Ethernet connection is more stable for large transfers than Wi-Fi, but only if your MacBook has an Ethernet port or you add a compatible adapter. Apple’s documentation does not give measured speed comparisons between the two.

However, to play current-gen games (PS5 / Xbox Series X|S), you must copy them to the console's internal SSD first. The external drive is great for keeping your library on hand, but it can't run the new games.
Apple’s “Configure SMB Multichannel behavior” guide says SMB Multichannel is enabled by default in macOS Big Sur 11.3 and later. It can improve throughput or provide redundancy only when the server supports it and the relevant network connections are available. Do not assume a speed gain on every network.
Old MacBook versus a dedicated NAS
These are the criteria to weigh. Apple’s documentation covers only the Mac side, so the dedicated NAS column shows what to compare rather than measured results.
| Criterion | Old MacBook with File Sharing | Dedicated NAS |
|---|---|---|
| Hardware cost | Uses a laptop you already own | Not compared here; varies by product |
| Power and sleep | Depends on sleep settings; Apple notes that preventing sleep may increase power use | Not compared here; depends on the device |
| Administration | Managed through System Settings on macOS | Managed through the NAS vendor’s software |
| Client support | SMB for Windows clients; Mac and other clients depend on configuration | Depends on the product |
| Storage expansion | Limited to the internal drive plus any attached external drive you verify | Depends on the product |
| Redundancy and backup | Not established by Apple’s sharing guides; needs a separate backup plan | Depends on the product and configuration |
The old MacBook is a sensible choice for a household that needs occasional shared files at no extra hardware cost. If you need continuous availability or protection against drive failure, a MacBook used this way is not the right foundation on its own.
