To turn written content into audio without recording your own voice, use text-to-speech (TTS). You provide the text, choose a synthetic voice, generate the speech, and export the result as an audio file such as MP3. Microsoft offers a no-code route through its Speech Studio Audio Content Creation tool. Google Cloud Text-to-Speech and Amazon Polly are cloud services that suit a more configurable, API-driven workflow. ElevenLabs is a voice platform with its own plan-based usage terms. The right choice depends on how much setup you can handle, which voices and languages you need, the output format your platform accepts, and whether you are allowed to publish the result.
What text-to-speech produces, and what it does not
A TTS service reads the text you supply and synthesizes speech from it. It does not understand your intent, so a spelling error, a missing paragraph break or an unusual abbreviation becomes a spoken error. Google documents that its service accepts raw text or SSML (Speech Synthesis Markup Language), and Amazon Polly accepts plain text or SSML, which means one clean source file can feed several services. See the Google Cloud Text-to-Speech basics and the Amazon Polly overview.
Which route fits your situation
The four services below are the ones with documented material behind them. The table compares what each one documents about its interface, input and output. Where a cell says “not stated,” the cited vendor material does not give that detail, so check the current product page before you commit.

Routes in practice
Microsoft Speech Studio: the no-code path
Microsoft’s Speech Studio Audio Content Creation tool is the most direct option for someone who has never used a speech API. Microsoft’s text-to-speech overview describes its neural voices, and its quickstart demonstrates saving speech to an MP3 file. Expect the trade-off that a visual tool offers less automation than a script, so it suits one article or chapter at a time.

Google Cloud Text-to-Speech: configurable and API-oriented
Google’s product page states that the service offers 380+ voices across 75+ languages and variants. That figure is Google’s own published claim, checked for this article in 2026, and it may change. Google’s create-audio guide documents voice selection and controls for pitch, volume, speaking rate and sample rate. Because the service is an API, you need a cloud setup and some scripting before you hear anything.
Amazon Polly: SSML control and format choice
Amazon Polly accepts plain text or SSML and lets you select a voice and an output format. Its documentation covers SSML controls for pronunciation, volume, pitch and speech rate. Polly is a good fit when a downstream platform requires Ogg Vorbis or PCM rather than MP3.

- Prepare the text. Check spelling, paragraph breaks, names and numbers. Write out abbreviations you want read in full, and spell out numbers that could be read ambiguously. Generated speech follows the text as supplied, so an ambiguous item may be pronounced in a way you did not expect.
- Choose the workflow. Open Speech Studio and select Audio Content Creation for a no-code route. For a developer route, send the text (or SSML) to Google Cloud Text-to-Speech or Amazon Polly through their APIs.
- Select a language and voice, then generate a sample. Listen for how the service handles names, acronyms, punctuation and transitions between paragraphs. Judge the voices against your own text, since no independent listening test exists to tell you which service sounds best.
- Adjust the settings. In Google Cloud Text-to-Speech, set speaking rate, pitch, volume and sample rate. In Amazon Polly, use SSML tags for pronunciation, volume, pitch and speech rate. Regenerate a short sample after each change.
- Generate and export. Choose the format your player or publishing platform accepts. Google offers MP3 and LINEAR16 (WAV encoding), Amazon Polly offers MP3, Ogg Vorbis and PCM, and Microsoft’s quickstart produces MP3.
- Listen to the complete file. Play the full recording before you publish it. Fix any problem in the text or pronunciation, regenerate only the affected section, and listen again at the joins. This is practical editorial guidance, and no service will catch every error for you.
Rights and publishing
A generated audio file does not show that you own or may redistribute the underlying text. Confirm that you have permission to convert and publish the source material, then read the current terms of the service you used.

- Google Cloud: use of generated audio must comply with Google Cloud terms and applicable law, as described in the Google Cloud Text-to-Speech basics.
- Microsoft and Amazon: the cited material does not set out a commercial-use rule for generated speech, so read each provider’s current terms directly.
What the evidence does and does not establish
The material behind this guide consists of vendor documentation and product pages, checked in 2026. It describes features, formats and terms. It does not include an independent comparison of intelligibility, naturalness, listener preference or time saved, so no provider is named as the best-sounding option. The voice and language counts quoted above are vendor-published figures that can change.
A fair way to decide is to run the same paragraph through two services, listen for names and transitions, and choose the one whose output format and rights terms match your project.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a microphone or recording software?
No. TTS generates the voice from text, so you only need the text, a service or account for the route you choose, and a media player to check the finished file. Cloud API routes also need a development environment in which to send requests.
Can I turn a 200-page book into one MP3?
You can, but it is easier to convert the book one chapter at a time and then join the files with an audio editor. Each provider documents its own limits on how much text one request can contain, so check the current limits before you start.
