To turn all Windows 11 notifications on or off, open Start > Settings > System > Notifications and switch Notifications. To control one app, select it under Notifications from apps and other senders. If you want fewer interruptions without losing alerts, use Do not disturb or hide banners while keeping notifications in Notification Center.
Choose the right notification control
| What you want | Control to use | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Stop every Windows notification | System-wide Notifications switch | Turns notifications off broadly. |
| Stop alerts from one app | That app’s notification settings | Turns off or tailors alerts from the selected sender. |
| Quiet alerts temporarily or on a schedule | Do not disturb | Most alerts are sent to Notification Center instead of appearing as banners; exceptions can still appear. |
| Keep alerts available but avoid pop-ups | Turn off banners for an app | Notifications can remain in Notification Center for review. |
These controls are separate: turning off banners or enabling Do not disturb is not the same as disabling all notifications. Microsoft’s Windows notification guidance covers Windows 11 and Windows 10; the Settings path below is for Windows 11.
Turn all Windows 11 notifications on or off
- Open Start > Settings > System > Notifications.
- Switch Notifications on or off.
Use this system-wide switch only if you want the broadest change. To keep alerts from other apps while silencing a particular sender, use that app’s controls instead.
Stop or customize notifications from one app
- Go to Start > Settings > System > Notifications.
- Under Notifications from apps and other senders, select the app.
- Adjust the options shown for that app.
Depending on the app, you can turn its notifications on or off, show or hide banners, show or hide notifications in Notification Center, hide notification content on the lock screen, enable or disable notification sounds, and set its priority. Microsoft lists Top, High, and Normal priority. Only one app can have Top priority; High-priority notifications appear above Normal ones in Notification Center.
Use Do not disturb to quiet alerts
Turn it on or off manually
Open Notification Center from the taskbar and select the bell marked zZ to turn Do not disturb on. Select it again to turn the mode off. Most notifications received while it is on go to Notification Center instead of appearing as banners. Alarms, reminders, and apps you allow may still show banners.
Schedule quiet periods or set automatic conditions
For automatic quieting, open Start > Settings > System > Notifications and expand Turn on do not disturb automatically. Microsoft lists these conditions:
- At specified times of day.
- When duplicating a display.
- When gaming.
- When using an app in full-screen mode.
- During the first hour after a Windows feature update.
Let selected alerts through
Open the Do not disturb priority settings to allow calls or reminders and add apps that can notify you during quiet periods. This lets you silence most interruptions without blocking the alerts you consider important.

Find notifications that did not appear as banners
Open Notification Center with Windows key + N. Notifications muted by Do not disturb or hidden from banners can be reviewed there. You can expand some notifications, clear an individual notification, clear all notifications from an app, or clear all notifications. A banner may also include an action, such as dismissing a reminder or snoozing an alarm. Microsoft’s accessibility guidance also describes notification controls and quick access to Do not disturb.
Check Focus if notifications have gone quiet unexpectedly
A Focus session turns on Do not disturb by default. Focus can also hide taskbar app badges and flashing during the session. Notifications received during Focus can be reviewed in Notification Center. If Do not disturb was already on before Focus began, Microsoft says it remains on after the session ends; check the mode if alerts do not resume as expected. See Microsoft’s Focus guidance for details.

When notification settings are unavailable or differ
- Some settings are missing or disabled: On a work- or school-managed PC, an administrator may control notification settings. Contact your organization’s IT administrator if you cannot change a setting.
- Security alerts are still appearing: Windows Security has its own notification settings for items such as informational security events and firewall alerts. These are separate from the general System > Notifications switch. See Microsoft’s Windows Security app settings.
- The labels or layout do not match: Windows settings can change with updates. Search Settings for Notifications and confirm your Windows version and build before following version-specific troubleshooting steps.
