To make your Samsung Galaxy S23 rotate automatically, swipe down from the top of the screen to open Quick Settings, then tap the orientation tile until it reads Auto rotate. Turn the phone sideways in an app or screen that supports landscape. To keep the display fixed in one orientation, tap the tile while holding the phone the way you want it locked; it will change to Portrait or Landscape.
Turn on automatic screen rotation
-
Swipe down from the top of the screen to open Quick Settings. On newer layouts, start at the top-right edge. If the tile is not on the first panel, swipe down again to expand Quick Settings or move horizontally through its pages.
-
Find the orientation tile. If it says Portrait or Landscape, the screen is locked. Tap it until it says Auto rotate. In Samsung’s documented interface, Auto rotate is highlighted when enabled; a locked orientation appears gray and shows a lock icon.

Samsung’s instructions describe slightly different swipe gestures across support pages: one says to swipe down from the top, while a newer US page specifies the top right. The precise gesture and panel layout can vary with the software version and Quick Settings arrangement on your S23. Samsung’s US screen-rotation instructions and Samsung’s UK instructions cover the setting and its fixed-orientation options.

To resume automatic switching, tap the Portrait or Landscape tile again so it returns to Auto rotate. Samsung describes this lock-and-return behavior in its Galaxy screen-rotation guidance.
Make the Home screen rotate
The Home screen stays in portrait by default, even when Auto rotate is on. To allow a landscape Home screen, look for the Home screen rotation setting. Depending on the One UI version, press and hold an empty area of the Home screen, open Settings, and enable Rotate to landscape mode. Another Samsung-documented route is to press and hold the Auto rotate tile to view additional rotation switches. Labels and menu placement vary; Samsung notes that One UI 6.1 adds separate Lock screen and Voice call screen options. Samsung’s current support article describes the additional switches, while its UK instructions give the Home screen settings route.

If you still cannot find it, open Quick Settings and tap Edit (the pencil icon).
-
Locate Auto rotate, add it to the panel, and tap Done. The exact position of Edit can differ on the S23 depending on its software layout.

Only one app or screen stays fixed
Auto rotate does not force every app or screen to support both orientations. Try turning the phone in another app that supports landscape before treating a single app’s behavior as a phone problem. A particular screen within an app may also have its own orientation limit. Samsung notes that some apps do not support every orientation.
The phone stays in portrait or landscape everywhere
Check the Quick Settings tile. If it says Portrait or Landscape, tap it to return to Auto rotate. If it already says Auto rotate and rotation fails across apps that normally support landscape, the available Samsung guidance does not establish a specific S23 hardware diagnostic sequence. For device-specific diagnosis, contact Samsung Support or use Samsung Members rather than assuming a particular sensor has failed.
TalkBack is enabled
Google’s Android accessibility guidance cautions that automatic rotation can interrupt spoken feedback and advises TalkBack users to turn Auto rotate off. This is general Android accessibility advice, not an S23-specific fault report. Google explains the TalkBack consideration.
