Most MSI laptops have no separate fan switch. The cooling fan starts and speeds up on its own as temperatures rise. What you can actually change is the fan mode, using the MSI utility that came with your notebook, and on many models you can force the fan to full speed with a setting called Cooler Boost.
Direct answer: set the fan mode in MSI’s system utility
On supported MSI notebooks, open the MSI system-management utility preinstalled for your model and change the fan behavior from its performance settings. MSI’s current route in its fan-speed guide (last updated July 17, 2026) is User Scenario → Extreme Performance → gear icon → Advanced Settings → Advanced, then locate Fan Speed and select the mode you want. MSI’s overheating guide (dated May 13, 2024) gives a shorter route for the full-speed option: Features → User Scenario → Extreme Performance → Fan Speed → Cooler Boost → Save.
Menu names change between utility versions and between models. Some labels read Apex Mode instead of Extreme Performance, and a missing option is often a model limitation rather than a fault.
Step 1: Find the MSI utility on your notebook
MSI laptops ship with one of several control applications, depending on the model and its age: MSI Center, MSI Dragon Center, MSI Center Pro, or another model-specific MSI utility. Start by searching the Start menu for “MSI” and opening whichever one appears. MSI’s MSI Center overview (July 25, 2023) describes its User Scenario modes and notes that the modes vary by model. Do not assume one particular app is the right one for every owner, and do not install a utility from a third-party site to replace the one that came with the machine.

Step 2: Change the fan mode
- Open the MSI utility and go to User Scenario, or the equivalent performance or fan page in your version.
- Select Extreme Performance (or Apex Mode, if that is the label your version shows).
- Click the gear icon on that mode, then open Advanced Settings.
- Open the Advanced tab and find Fan Speed.
- Choose the mode you want from the table below. To force maximum speed, select Cooler Boost.
- Click Save and confirm the change applied. Leave the utility open or reopen it to check that the setting stuck.
If your version uses a different order, the labels above still map to the same settings. Look for the fan-speed control inside the performance mode rather than in the general system tab.
Choosing a fan mode
The three fan behaviors MSI describes differ in how much cooling they give and how loud they are.

For everyday use, leave the fan on Auto. Use Cooler Boost when a demanding task runs hot and you accept the extra noise, and use a custom curve only if you have a specific cooling or noise goal and your model supports it.
If the Fan Speed option is missing
MSI states that fan curves are a hardware specification on some notebooks, so the Advanced option or Cooler Boost may simply not exist on your machine. Some systems also use one shared fan rather than separate CPU and GPU fans, which changes what the utility can show. Check your model’s specification page on the MSI website before concluding that something is broken.

When the fan seems to be stopped
A fan reading zero RPM does not always mean failure. MSI’s guide “Why the fan is not spinning?” (December 17, 2021) explains that thermal designs differ between models and that the discrete GPU fan can stay off until its temperature threshold is reached. The threshold is set by the manufacturer and is not published in that guide, so you cannot test it by guessing a number.
- Run a demanding task for several minutes and check whether the fan starts once the machine warms up.
- Check Fan Speed in the utility. If Cooler Boost is listed, select it and watch whether airflow and noise increase.
- If the fan never starts, the laptop feels hot at idle, or it shuts down under load, contact MSI customer service with your exact model name.

- Install any available BIOS and Windows updates.
- Set Extreme Performance and Cooler Boost through MSI Center, as described above, to test whether fan control is the limit.
- Open Task Manager and close applications that use a lot of CPU or GPU resources.
- Make sure the laptop sits on a hard, flat surface and that the air vents are not blocked.
- Run Hardware Diagnosis in MSI Center if your model includes it.
If these steps do not bring temperatures down, MSI recommends contacting its support team.

Cleaning the vents safely
Dust in the intake and exhaust vents is a common cause of poor cooling. Before cleaning, shut the laptop down completely. Use compressed air or a blower, and keep the nozzle some distance from the exhaust vents so you do not force debris or heat back into the chassis. A canned compressed-air duster is an ordinary tool for this job; it does not turn the fan on or replace the controls in MSI’s utility.

Abnormal noise: clacking, impact, or obstruction
MSI’s fan-noise guide (MSI Australia, March 12, 2024) separates normal airflow noise at maximum speed from sounds that suggest a problem. A steady whoosh at Cooler Boost is expected. Clacking, a grinding or impact sound, or a noise that continues at normal speeds can indicate a foreign object or obstruction in the fan.
- Shut the laptop down and clean the vents as described above.
- Recheck Cooler Boost and the fan settings after the noise continues.
- If the noise persists or sounds mechanical, contact MSI service. Do not open the chassis yourself, and do not buy a generic replacement fan without your exact model number, because compatibility varies between notebooks.
Summary of what matters
Fan control on MSI laptops lives in the MSI utility shipped with your model, not in a switch on the hardware. Auto handles normal use, Cooler Boost gives maximum airflow where supported, and a zero-RPM reading alone does not prove a failure. When the settings and the vent check do not resolve overheating, abnormal noise, or a fan that never starts, MSI customer service is the right next step.
