Sidetone lets you hear a local return of your own voice or transmission. To turn it on, first identify the device and mode you are using, then look in its call, audio, monitoring, or radio/CW settings—or search the exact model’s manual for “sidetone.” There is no universal menu path: the setting may be called receiver sidetone, mic monitoring, or CW sidetone, and some products may not offer it.
What sidetone does—and which kind you need
In voice communications, sidetone feeds some of your microphone audio back to your own receiver so you can hear yourself while speaking. In radio and CW operation, it can be an audible local indication of keyed transmission. The term describes a related monitoring function, but the source and controls differ by product.
Before changing settings, note the device, app, and mode you want to use—for example, a phone call through a headset or CW operation through a radio-control app. Then consult that product’s documentation. A setting on one phone or radio app is not evidence of a matching control on another.

- Check feature support. Look up your exact device model and software or app version in its manual. Search for “sidetone,” and, if that yields nothing, check terms such as “mic monitoring,” “voice feedback,” “receiver sidetone,” or “CW sidetone.”
- Open the relevant audio controls. Depending on the product, check call or audio settings, headset monitoring controls, or radio/CW settings. Confirm that the microphone and audio route you intend to use are selected.
- Enable the appropriate sidetone source. Some systems return audio locally in software; others use a device or radio-generated return. If the product offers more than one source, select the one intended for your setup.
- Raise the level gradually. Start low and increase it while listening at a comfortable overall volume. The available documentation does not establish a universal recommended sidetone level.
- Test in the intended mode. Make a brief call or test transmission, as appropriate, and check that the return is audible, comfortable, and not noticeably delayed or duplicated.
Examples: where documented controls appear
Grandstream WP8x6 phones
Grandstream’s WP8x6 administration guide covers the WP816, WP826, and WP836 and documents a “Receiver Sidetone Volume” control with a valid range of 0 to 30. That range applies to the guide’s control; it is not a scale to expect on other phones or headsets.

K4-Control for iOS and CW operation
K4-Control’s iOS documentation describes two CW sidetone sources: a tone generated in the app and one generated by the radio. For that documented setup, adjust the app-generated tone in CW Decoder settings. To enable or adjust the radio-generated tone, select CW in the MON options. Choose the source that fits your setup rather than enabling both.
Why sidetone is delayed, doubled, or missing
Delayed return
A return routed through a network or another remote path can arrive later than a local one. K4-Control specifically notes that its radio-generated CW sidetone can be delayed by network transmission and return audio. If the return sounds late, check whether your chosen source travels through a network, and whether a local source is available for your setup.

Doubled return
If you hear two tones, check whether both the device or radio and its companion app are generating sidetone. K4-Control documents duplicate sidetone when both of its sources are enabled. Turn off one source and test again; do not assume another product has the same behavior unless its documentation confirms it.
No return
- Confirm that the exact device and mode support sidetone.
- Check that the intended microphone and audio route are selected.
- Verify that the relevant sidetone control is enabled and its level is audible.
- For an app-and-radio setup, check which source is selected and whether its radio or app control is active.
Menu names and paths vary by model and software version, so use the manual for the equipment you have rather than relying on a generic set of steps.
