On your iPad, go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup, then turn on Back Up This iPad. For an immediate backup, tap Back Up Now. Automatic backups run daily when the iPad is connected to power and Wi-Fi and its screen is locked.
Turn on iCloud Backup
- Open Settings on your iPad.
- Tap [your name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup.
- Turn on Back Up This iPad.
- To start a backup immediately, tap Back Up Now. Keep the iPad connected to Wi-Fi until the backup finishes. The last backup date and time appear beneath the button.
Apple’s current instructions give this iPad-specific switch label in the iPad User Guide. Its general iPhone and iPad instructions use the label “Back Up This [Device]” on the corresponding device.
What happens after you turn it on
iCloud attempts an automatic backup once a day when the iPad is connected to power, connected to Wi-Fi, and locked. Some Wi-Fi + Cellular iPad models that support 5G may also have a carrier-provided option to back up over cellular; availability depends on the iPad model and carrier.
A backup saves information and settings that do not regularly sync to iCloud, such as device settings, Home Screen layout, and app organization. It can help transfer information when you replace your iPad. Items already syncing to iCloud are not duplicated in the backup. See Apple’s iPad backup guide for details.

If iCloud says there is not enough storage
Apple provides 5 GB of free iCloud storage. That capacity is shared by backups, iCloud Photos, iCloud Drive, and other iCloud data, so less than 5 GB may be available for your iPad’s backup. If the account is full, the iPad cannot back up to iCloud. Apple explains the shared storage limits in its iCloud storage management guide.
Check the next backup size
- Open Settings > [your name] > iCloud.
- Tap Storage or Manage Account Storage, then Backups.
- Select your iPad and check the next backup size. Apple notes that calculating this figure can take a few minutes.
Free up or add storage
- Remove iCloud data you no longer need.
- In the iPad’s backup settings, turn off selected apps to reduce what the next backup includes.
- If you need more capacity, consider an iCloud+ plan. Apple’s storage guide describes the available management options.
Deleting an existing device backup is not a harmless cleanup step: it also turns off iCloud Backup for that device. If you disable or stop iCloud Backup, Apple says existing backups remain available for 180 days before deletion. See Apple’s storage guidance.

If iCloud Backup is greyed out or fails
The switch is unavailable
A restore in progress can make the setting unavailable. Also check whether a management profile restricts iCloud Backup: open Settings > General > VPN & Device Management. If the iPad is managed by a school or employer, the administrator may control this setting. Apple lists these causes in its iCloud backup troubleshooting steps.

A backup will not complete
- Check that the iPad is connected to Wi-Fi and that the iCloud account has enough storage.
- Install any available iPadOS updates.
- Try another Wi-Fi network.
- If the backup is taking a long time, check the network’s upload speed. Apple recommends leaving the iPad plugged in and connected to Wi-Fi for 24 hours before trying its suggested archive-and-retry steps.

When to back up to a computer instead
A computer backup is an alternative if you prefer a local copy or do not have enough iCloud space. Apple documents backups to a Mac using Finder on macOS 10.15 or later, and to a computer using iTunes on earlier macOS versions or Windows. Local computer backups can be encrypted with a password. Follow Apple’s iPad backup instructions for the applicable route.
