To turn on a Samsung Galaxy phone, press and hold its Power/Side button. If it stays black or seems frozen, hold Power/Side and Volume Down together for at least seven seconds, then release when the Samsung logo appears and the phone vibrates. If the battery may be empty, connect a suitable charger and cable and leave it connected even if no charging symbol appears at first.
Turn on the phone normally
Press and hold the phone’s Power or Side button for a few seconds. Button names and placement vary by Galaxy model; use the button identified in your device’s manual. Samsung’s current support guidance calls it the Power (Side) button. Samsung’s Galaxy startup instructions describe the general procedure.
If the screen is black or frozen, force-restart it
- Press and hold the Power/Side button and Volume Down at the same time.
- Keep holding them for at least seven seconds. Release when the Samsung logo appears and the phone vibrates.
Press the buttons simultaneously. Pressing them out of sync can open the volume bar or power menu. Remove a case if it prevents either button from being pressed properly. Samsung says a correctly performed forced restart will not erase information; that assurance applies to this restart procedure, not to factory resets or other reset actions. Samsung Philippines’ guidance was last updated April 29, 2024.

If it still will not start, check the charging setup
- Connect the phone to a Samsung-certified charger and compatible cable.
- Leave it connected if the screen remains blank. When a battery is completely drained, a charging indicator may not appear immediately; Samsung does not specify a single charging wait time that applies to every Galaxy model.
- If available, try another compatible charger and cable to rule out faulty charging equipment.
- Check the phone, charging port, charger and cable for visible damage. Do not use damaged equipment.
Match the charger and cable to your exact model’s requirements. Replacing an accessory may help if the charging setup is at fault, but it will not resolve a frozen system or a hardware failure. Samsung recommends certified charging equipment and also advises trying different compatible charging gear when appropriate.
When to get professional help
A black screen alone does not identify the cause: the phone may be frozen, fully discharged, affected by a system fault, or have a hardware problem. If the force restart and charging checks do not work—or if the phone or accessories appear damaged, or liquid damage is suspected—contact Samsung Support or an authorized service center for diagnosis. Do not open the phone or probe its charging port with a sharp object; Samsung’s cited troubleshooting guidance does not recommend either as a repair step.
