There is no single microphone switch for every Bose product. First identify whether you want voice commands on a speaker or soundbar, or microphone audio for calls on headphones. On supported speakers and soundbars, a physical privacy control may disable voice-command microphones; headphone call microphones instead require model-specific mute and connection checks.
Start by identifying your Bose product and use
Find the model name in the Bose app, on the product label, or on its Bose support page. Then choose the matching case below:
- Smart speaker or soundbar: You want the device to hear voice-assistant commands.
- Headphones: You want the microphone to transmit your voice in a phone call or another voice-input app.
Assistant setup and headphone call audio are different tasks. The controls and indicator lights described for one model should not be assumed to apply to another.
Turn on the Home Speaker 500 microphone
Check the physical microphone button
On the Bose Home Speaker 500 (also referred to in Bose setup information as the Smart Speaker 500), find the microphone button on top of the speaker, toward the lower-left area. If its red LED is lit, the microphones are off. Press the physical button again; the red indicator should go away when they are on.

Bose states that neither a voice command nor the app can operate this privacy switch. App setup alone therefore will not turn the microphones back on if the physical button has disabled them. Bose Smart Speaker 500 product information
Turn on voice-command microphones on the current Smart Soundbar
For the Bose Smart Soundbar sold from 2024, check the light below the Microphone button on top of the soundbar. A red light means voice-command microphones are disabled. Tap the Microphone button to remove the red light and allow voice commands. Bose Support: Light bar is red | Bose Smart Soundbar

Read the Home Speaker 300 microphone indicator correctly
The Home Speaker 300 uses a different indicator convention: Bose’s status information says the microphone icon is off when microphone and voice-assistant functionality is enabled, and red when it is disabled. Do not transfer the red-means-off interpretation from another Bose product without checking your model’s instructions. Set up the Bose app and voice assistant separately
Smart Speaker 500 setup
To set up the Smart Speaker 500, install the Bose app, enable Bluetooth on your phone, and grant the Bluetooth, Location Service, or Local Access Network permissions the app requests so it can discover and control the speaker. During setup, choose a voice assistant or skip that step and add one later. QuietComfort headphone pairing
Bose’s QuietComfort support instructions describe adding the headphones in the Bose app and allowing requested Bluetooth or Location Service permissions to help the app detect them. App setup is optional for direct Bluetooth pairing: you can pair through your phone or computer’s Bluetooth settings instead. Troubleshoot a Bose headphone microphone
Noise Cancelling Headphones 700
For the Noise Cancelling Headphones 700, Bose recommends checking that the microphone openings along the front edge are not blocked, confirming the microphone is not muted, and testing another phone call and another compatible device. QuietComfort headphones with an audio cable
If you use a QuietComfort audio cable with an inline microphone, Bose says the connected mobile device must support the cable’s CTIA-standard pin connection. If these steps do not fix it
Check the support page or owner’s guide for the exact Bose model, especially if it is a legacy product: controls and indicator meanings are model-specific. For headphones, distinguish Bluetooth call audio from wired audio, and check the mute control in the call or voice-input app as well as the device. The available instructions here do not establish one activation sequence for every Bose model, operating system, or conferencing app.
