To stop Windows 11 from using your typing and handwriting information to improve Microsoft’s typing and writing services, go to Settings > Privacy & security > Diagnostics & feedback and turn Improve inking and typing off. If you also want Windows to stop keeping your personal custom word list, turn off the separate Custom inking and typing word list setting.
Turn off Improve inking and typing
- Open Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Diagnostics & feedback.
- Switch Improve inking and typing to Off.
Microsoft identifies this toggle as the control for stopping Windows from using typing and handwriting information to improve those services. When enabled, Microsoft says samples of typed or written content may be used to improve handwriting recognition, autocompletion, next-word prediction, and spelling correction. Microsoft’s Diagnostics, feedback, and privacy in Windows guidance describes the samples as divided into small portions and processed to remove unique identifiers, sequencing information, and other details—such as email addresses and numeric values—that could help reconstruct the input or associate it with a person. Microsoft also says associated performance data, including manual text changes and words added to the dictionary, is included, and that this data is not used for Tailored experiences. This is Microsoft’s description of its handling, not an independent verification.
Clear the custom typing and inking word list separately
The custom word list is a different privacy control from Improve inking and typing. Windows builds it from words you type or write to improve typing and inking accuracy. Microsoft says the list is associated with your Microsoft account and may be used across Microsoft products.

- Open Settings > Privacy & security > Inking & typing personalization.
- Turn Custom inking and typing word list off. Microsoft says switching it off clears the custom list.

Check account sync if you use more than one device
Windows Backup can sync selected preferences, including language preferences and dictionary, through a Microsoft account. If you are concerned about information or settings associated with your account, review Windows Backup’s Remember my preferences and dictionary settings, as well as the account’s inking controls. Microsoft notes that Windows may ask permission to sync account data in certain countries or regions; it does not identify those regions in the cited guidance. Turning off a Windows toggle should not be treated as confirmation that every previously synced copy or other historical account data has been erased. Microsoft distinguishes stopping future collection from deleting diagnostic data, and directs users to manage account-associated data separately.

What these settings do not control
Tailored experiences is another option on the Diagnostics & feedback page. Turning it off is not a substitute for turning off Improve inking and typing; Microsoft documents the latter as the control for stopping use of typing and handwriting information to improve those services.
