To stop water flowing to a Samsung refrigerator, close the shutoff valve on the household water line feeding it. The valve is part of the home’s plumbing, not a universal on-screen fridge setting; its location and handle vary by installation. If you are changing the filter, shut off the supply and dispense water until the flow stops before removing it.
Where is the water shutoff valve for a Samsung refrigerator?
Samsung’s US water-line installation guidance shows a shutoff valve connected to the cold-water line, with a supply line running from the valve to the refrigerator. The valve may be behind or beside the appliance, or elsewhere along the home’s water-line plumbing. There is no single location or handle direction that applies to every installation.
If you cannot confidently identify the correct valve, check the refrigerator’s model-specific user manual or ask the installer. Do not twist or disconnect the refrigerator’s tubing to stop the flow.

- If practical, move the refrigerator carefully enough to view its water connection. Avoid pulling hard on the tubing.
- Trace the water line and identify the valve controlling its supply. Close that valve using its handle. Because valve designs differ, do not assume a particular turn direction or number of turns.
- If the valve is stuck, damaged, or unclear, stop and contact the installer or a plumber rather than forcing it.
Do you need to shut off the water before changing the filter?
Yes. Shut off the refrigerator’s water supply, then dispense water until the flow stops. Samsung Canada recommends this step to relieve pressure and make filter removal easier. Filter placement varies by model; consult the Samsung Canada filter guide or your model’s manual if you are unsure where yours is located.

You do not need to buy a replacement filter just to turn off the water. If you are replacing one, verify the refrigerator model or the existing filter before purchasing. Samsung’s US filter guidance identifies HAF-CIN, HAF-QIN, and HAFCU1 as filter types used for some refrigerators; the correct type depends on your model.
What if the refrigerator water line is leaking?
If a connection is leaking, Samsung’s official US installation guidance says to turn off the main water supply. Dry the area, and do not disconnect tubing that may still be pressurized. If the leak continues or you cannot safely operate the shutoff, contact the installer or a qualified plumbing professional.

When is a water-line installation kit needed?
A kit is relevant when installing or replacing plumbing components, not as a routine requirement for turning off the refrigerator’s water. Samsung describes a common US installation-kit setup using 1/4-inch copper tubing, a 1/4-inch compression nut, and a ferrule, while noting that procedures depend on the equipment. Check that any parts match the existing plumbing and refrigerator, and follow local plumbing requirements; ask a plumber if you are uncertain.
Turning the supply back on after filter work
After replacing the filter and reopening the supply, follow the instructions for your exact model and filter. Samsung’s US guidance recommends dispensing several gallons after installation to clear air or impurities, but the steps and amount vary by model. Check the connections for leaks.
