To turn off sound in the Pokémon GO app, open the Poké Ball menu on the map screen, go to Settings, and switch off Music and Sound Effects. The two controls are independent, so you can silence just the background music or both music and effects.
Turn off game sound in the app
The steps below follow the menu path in a current secondary tutorial updated September 28, 2026. Labels may shift when Niantic updates the app, so if a name differs slightly, look for the same sound options in the Settings screen.

- From the map screen, tap the Poké Ball button.
- Tap Settings, shown as a gear icon in the current tutorial.
- Turn off Music to stop the background music.
- Turn off Sound Effects to stop effects such as catch sounds, PokéStop spins and menu clicks.
Both switches can be turned back on at any time from the same screen. The official Niantic Help Center landing page lists a Settings section but does not itself describe these audio controls, so the path above comes from the tutorial rather than from Niantic’s own instructions.
Why the phone’s Silent mode may not be enough
It is tempting to flip your phone to silent and assume the game is muted too. That is not guaranteed. A current secondary tutorial notes that on iPhone, many games can keep playing through the speaker while Silent mode is on, and recommends using the in-game switches instead. I could not confirm that behaviour from Niantic’s documentation, so treat the in-game settings as the reliable method and use the phone’s volume or Silent switch as a secondary measure.

Silence the Pokémon GO Plus + accessory
If you mean the Pokémon GO Plus + wearable rather than the phone app, the accessory has its own silent mode, controlled from the device itself. Pokémon Support’s accessory FAQ, updated January 30, 2026, describes it this way:
- Enter silent mode: hold the top button, then press the main button for at least one second. Two short vibrations confirm entry.
- Exit silent mode: repeat the same action. One vibration confirms you are back in normal mode.
- Side effect: silent mode also suspends the device’s alarms and notifications, so do not rely on it if you need those.
This accessory setting does not change the app’s Music and Sound Effects switches, and turning off the app’s sound does not silence the Plus +.

For most players, the two in-app switches are the right choice. Use the Plus + mode only if the wearable itself is making noise.
