To turn off Silent mode on your iPhone 12 Pro Max, flip the Ring/Silent switch on the left edge toward the front of the phone. Check that the orange indicator is no longer visible.
Turn off Silent mode with the Ring/Silent switch
- Find the Ring/Silent switch on the left edge of the iPhone 12 Pro Max, above the volume buttons. Apple’s iPhone 12 Pro Max guide identifies the switch and its location.
- Flip the switch toward the front of the phone—the side with the screen—to turn Silent mode off. Apple’s instructions for silencing iPhone describe this direction for models with a Ring/Silent switch.
- Check the indicator beside the switch. If orange is visible, Silent mode is on; when orange is no longer visible, the phone is in ring mode. Apple explains the orange indicator.
With Silent mode off, the iPhone can play ringtones, alerts, and sound effects. Silent mode suppresses those sounds, though the phone may still vibrate.
If your iPhone still does not ring
Check whether Do Not Disturb is active. Open Control Center, tap Focus, and turn off Do Not Disturb if it is enabled. This is a separate setting: Do Not Disturb can silence incoming calls, texts, and notifications even when the Ring/Silent switch is set to ring. Apple’s Focus guidance explains the feature.
If the switch will not move or does not appear to change the phone’s behavior, the available operating instructions do not establish a cause. Consult Apple Support for device-specific troubleshooting rather than assuming a particular part has failed.

Why some sounds may play in Silent mode
Hearing audio does not necessarily mean Silent mode is off. Clock alarms, audio apps such as Music, and many games can play through the built-in speaker while Silent mode is on. Camera, Voice Memos, and Emergency Alert sounds may also be audible in some countries or regions. Apple describes these exceptions.
Use the switch—not Action button instructions
The iPhone 12 Pro Max has a physical Ring/Silent switch. Apple’s Action button guidance applies to supported models that have an Action button instead; it is not the control for changing Silent mode on this phone. Apple’s Action button instructions cover those models.
