There is no single police or wanted-level switch for every Grand Theft Auto game. In GTA V, Director Mode has a session-only Wanted Level: Disabled setting; Story Mode cheats can lower stars but do not establish a permanent off switch. In GTA Online, call Lester to remove an active wanted level for an in-game fee. San Andreas uses its own cheats, while FiveM server operators can configure wanted stars and AI police separately.
First identify your GTA game and mode
The right method depends on the installment and whether you are in Story Mode, Online, Director Mode, or playing on a FiveM server. These options are not interchangeable. The GTA V manual hosted by Xbox describes the familiar one-to-five-star wanted system; the controls below address specific games and modes.

Turn off wanted-level gain in GTA V Director Mode
Director Mode is the clearest built-in off-style option in GTA V. Its Wanted Level setting includes Normal, Low, Medium, High, and Disabled. Choose Disabled to prevent a wanted level from being gained for that session. This is a Director Mode setting, not a setting for Story Mode or GTA Online. The Director Mode reference notes that law enforcement, military, or security forces may still attack if the actor is already in a battle or is directly attacked.

Lower wanted stars in GTA V Story Mode
In Story Mode, the LAWYERUP cheat lowers your wanted level rather than disabling the system. Enter the PC or phone input, or the controller sequence for your platform and edition, as listed in the PC Gamer GTA V cheats guide. The guide covers modern PlayStation and Xbox versions as well as PC. Its listed cheat is a way to adjust stars; the reviewed guidance does not establish a permanent Story Mode settings-menu control that prevents future wanted levels.

Remove an active wanted level in GTA Online
Call Lester and pay the in-game fee to remove an active wanted level. Rockstar describes this option in its GTA Online Starter Tips. It clears the current wanted status; it does not turn off police or stop future wanted levels.
A December 23, 2025 Gameranx report said a “Clear on Death” option appeared in code but was disabled at that time. That report does not confirm the option is available in the current game, so it should not be treated as a usable setting.

Use the correct wanted-level cheats in San Andreas
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas has different cheats from GTA V. The PC Gamer San Andreas cheats guide lists the following phrases and effects; use the corresponding PC code or console input sequence in that guide for your platform.

Disable wanted stars and AI police on a FiveM server
If you mean “How do I disable the wanted level in FiveM?” or “How do I stop AI police from responding?”, this is a server-operator task rather than a normal player’s settings-menu change. The FiveM-MiniMaps guide to disabling wanted levels and AI police describes client scripting with SetMaxWantedLevel(0) to prevent stars. It also covers separate controls for existing wanted status, dispatch services, random cops, and scanner audio; suppressing stars alone is not the same as disabling every AI police response.

- This game will no longer support Windows 7 or 8 operating systems starting January 30, 2024.
The guide warns that other scripts or events may reset these settings. Operators may need to apply them again when a player loads. This configuration path is for FiveM server administration and should not be confused with an in-game option available to every GTA player.
