To turn off NumLock on an ASUS laptop, press the NumLock key or the key combination confirmed in your exact model’s manual. If you cannot identify the physical key, use Windows On-Screen Keyboard: open Run, enter osk, select Options, enable Turn on numeric key pad if needed, then click NumLock. ASUS keyboard layouts vary, so no single shortcut applies to every model.
First, identify which number function is active
If letter keys are typing numbers, the built-in keyboard’s embedded numeric keypad may be enabled. Some ASUS keyboards assign number functions to dual-purpose keys, and NumLock changes how those keys behave. Look for markings such as NumLk, Num Lock, or Ins/Num Lk; the key’s position and labeling depend on the keyboard design.
A NumberPad that lights up on the touchpad is a separate feature. Its lock setting is not the same as the keyboard’s NumLock switch. An external numeric keyboard can also have its own NumLock key, and its behavior may vary by model.

- Check the keycaps for a NumLock marking. If NumLock shares a key with another function, look for the Fn marking and consult the manual for your exact ASUS model to confirm whether Fn is part of the toggle.
- Press the documented key or combination once. NumLock is a toggle, so pressing it again changes the state back.
- Test the keys that were entering numbers. If your keyboard has a NumLock or numeric-keypad indicator, check whether its state changed; indicator design and placement vary.
For example, ASUS’s legacy A1B notebook manual documents Fn + Ins NumLK for its embedded keypad: ASUS A1B notebook manual. That is a model-specific example, not a universal ASUS shortcut. Use your own model’s manual if the markings do not make the combination clear.

Use Windows On-Screen Keyboard if the physical key is unclear
ASUS documents the On-Screen Keyboard as a way to toggle NumLock without locating a physical key. The Windows interface labels can differ slightly by version.
- Open the Run dialog and type
osk, then open the On-Screen Keyboard. - Select Options. If the numeric keypad is not shown, check Turn on numeric key pad and confirm.
- Click NumLock on the On-Screen Keyboard, then test the affected physical keys.

If the touchpad NumberPad is the problem
On supported ASUS laptops, the touchpad can display a NumberPad. MyASUS includes a NumberPad Lock setting for this touchpad feature; it does not toggle NumLock on an external digital keyboard. ASUS says availability and requirements vary by model, including MyASUS, ASUS System Control Interface, and touchpad driver support. Check the current MyASUS Device Settings FAQ for supported-device details and instructions.
When an external keyboard or startup setting is involved
External numeric keyboard
If you connected an external keyboard, check its own NumLock key as well. ASUS’s legacy A1B manual describes a model-specific interaction in which an external keyboard’s NumLock can affect both keyboards, while a separate Fn combination disables that notebook’s embedded keypad. Do not assume that behavior applies to every ASUS laptop.

BIOS startup NumLock option
An ASUS motherboard manual documents a BIOS setting called Boot Up NumLock Status, with On and Off choices. That motherboard example does not establish that the option exists in ASUS laptop BIOS menus. Consult the documentation for your exact laptop before changing BIOS settings; if it does not identify a relevant option, use the keyboard or Windows method instead.

- Confirm the symptom: test the keys that were producing numbers after each toggle. A touchpad NumberPad, an external keypad, and embedded keyboard keys have separate controls on some models.
- Check the exact model documentation: ASUS keyboard markings and indicator designs differ. Use the support page or manual for your laptop rather than trying an unverified shortcut.
- Use the On-Screen Keyboard: if you can access Windows and a pointer, its NumLock control provides an alternative to the physical key.
ASUS’s keyboard indicator guidance, updated 2025-04-27, explains that the numeric keypad indicator shows whether that keypad is enabled while noting that keyboard designs differ.
