To stop Google from using your saved activity for personalized ads, open Google My Ad Center, switch Personalized ads to Off, and confirm. When you are signed in, that choice follows your Google account to other devices where the same account is signed in. You will still see advertising: Google can use contextual signals such as the time of day, the page topic, your location, a recent video, or an active search.
That account switch is only one layer. Android, Chrome, and iPhone have separate controls for ad topics, app-suggested ads, measurement, cookies, cross-app tracking, and Apple’s own ad system. Use the sections below to turn off the mechanisms that apply to your devices.
The controls at a glance
These settings do not all control the same system. Choose them by the scope you want to change and by the signal you want to limit.
| Control | Scope | Main signal limited | Expected result | What it does not cover |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Google My Ad Center, signed in | Your Google account across signed-in devices | Saved information, customized topics, and brands used for Google ads | Less personalization on Google services; contextual ads can remain | Non-Google advertising systems and sites with their own ad controls |
| Google Ads Settings, signed out | The current browser or device | Personalization for Search, YouTube, and Web partner-site sections | Less Google ad personalization in that local session | Other browsers, devices, accounts, and non-Google ad systems |
| Android Ads privacy | The Android device and apps that use these services | Ad topics, app-suggested ads, and ad measurement | Fewer topic, suggestion, and measurement signals from Android’s ad features | Every ad shown by every app or website |
| Chrome privacy controls | The Chrome browser | Third-party cookies, ad topics, and site-suggested ads | Less browser-based ad personalization | Other browsers, apps, and independent site advertising systems |
| iPhone Tracking permission | Cross-company tracking by iPhone apps | Tracking across other companies’ apps and websites for advertising or data-broker sharing | Stops new tracking-request prompts when the global permission is disabled | Apple’s own ad-personalization setting and ads that do not rely on this permission |
| Apple Advertising | Apple’s ad system on iPhone | Personalization within Apple’s advertising system | Ads may be less relevant | It may not reduce the number of ads |
Turn off Google personalized ads for a signed-in account
My Ad Center is the primary Google control when you use a Google account. The change covers Google services on devices where that account is signed in, rather than only the device on which you made the change.

- Open Google My Ad Center while signed in to the Google account you want to change.
- Find Personalized ads and select Off.
- Confirm the change when Google asks.
- Open the topic and brand controls if you want to review individual categories before or after disabling the main switch.
Turning personalization off removes the customized topics and brands that My Ad Center has associated with you and stops saved information from being used for ads on Google services. It does not make advertising disappear. Google can still select contextual ads from the content and circumstances of the page or service you are using.
Check the account and propagation
If you use more than one Google account, repeat the procedure for each account that is signed in on your devices. The setting follows the account, so a phone, tablet, and computer can show different results when they are signed in to different accounts. A device used without a Google sign-in is governed by the separate signed-out controls described next.
Use the topic controls for a narrower change
If you do not want to disable all personalization, My Ad Center also lets you review sensitive topics and individual ad topics. Those controls are useful when the goal is to remove a category rather than stop the use of personalized ads altogether. They are optional; the main Personalized ads switch is the broad control.

Google provides separate signed-out controls in Ads Settings for three areas: Search, YouTube, and Web, which covers partner sites. These choices are local to the browser or device where you make them.
- Open Google Ads Settings without signing in to the account whose settings you want to change.
- Open the relevant section: Search, YouTube, or Web.
- Switch that section’s personalized-ads option off.
- Confirm the change, then repeat the process for the other sections you use.
A signed-out choice does not follow you to another browser, a different device, or a later session that is signed in. If you clear browser data, replace the device, or use a separate browser profile, check the local setting again.
When to use signed-out controls
Use this route for a shared computer, a browser profile that you deliberately keep signed out, or a device on which you do not want to associate ad choices with a Google account. If you later sign in, the signed-in account’s My Ad Center setting becomes the relevant account-level control.

Limit ad-related signals on Android
Android’s Ads privacy page adds device-level controls that are separate from My Ad Center. On current Android guidance, use this path:
- Open Settings.
- Select Google.
- Choose All services.
- Open Privacy & security.
- Select Ads, then Ads privacy.
- Turn off the controls you do not want: Ad topics, App-suggested ads, and Ad measurement.
Ad topics
Android explains that ad topics can be inferred from the apps you use. Disabling this option limits that topic-based mechanism; it does not prevent every app from showing an ad or stop advertising systems that do not use Android’s topic control.
App-suggested ads
Some apps can suggest ads for later apps, and Android can store those suggestions for later use. Turning off App-suggested ads limits that stored suggestion mechanism. It does not turn off advertising in every app.
Ad measurement
Ad measurement allows limited data to be shared for measuring advertising results. Disabling it limits that measurement pathway, but it does not remove all diagnostics, analytics, or advertising delivered through other systems.
Why Android needs a separate change
My Ad Center controls personalization associated with Google services and your account. Android Ads privacy addresses device and app mechanisms. For the broadest reduction in Google-related ad signals, set the account control and then review all three Android toggles rather than assuming one setting changes the others.

- Review the third-party-cookie settings and choose the restriction that matches your tolerance for site compatibility.
- Review Chrome’s ad topics control and turn it off if you do not want Chrome using browser-observed topics for personalization.
- Review site-suggested ads and disable the feature if you do not want sites to provide suggestions used for personalized content or ads.
- Close and reopen pages that were already loaded so the browser can apply the new behavior to fresh requests.
Third-party-cookie restrictions can affect sign-ins, embedded media, shopping carts, and other site features that rely on cross-site cookies. If a site stops working, return to the cookie setting and use that site’s permitted exception rather than re-enabling every privacy feature.
Chrome’s controls reduce browser-based personalization. They do not change advertising delivered by another browser, by a mobile app, or by a site’s own ad system. They also do not replace the Google account setting for Google services.
Limit tracking on an iPhone
iPhone has two different settings that are often confused: permission for apps to track you across other companies’ apps and websites, and Apple’s own ad-personalization switch. Configure both if you want to address both systems.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Disable cross-app tracking requests
- Open Settings.
- Choose Privacy & Security.
- Open Tracking.
- Turn off Allow Apps to Request to Track.
- Review the list of individual apps and disable tracking for any app you do not want to permit.
Apple says this permission concerns tracking across other companies’ apps and websites for advertising or data-broker sharing. Turning off the global request option stops new permission prompts. It is not the same switch as Apple’s own ad-personalization setting.
Turn off Apple personalized ads
- Open Settings.
- Choose Privacy & Security.
- Open Apple Advertising.
- Turn off Personalized Ads.
Apple cautions that this can make ads less relevant without reducing their number. You may still receive ads from Apple’s services, and the tracking permission setting does not replace this Apple-specific control.
Use a layered setup on each device
The following order avoids a common mistake: changing a browser setting and expecting it to alter an account, or changing an account and expecting it to control every app.

- Start with the account. If you are signed in to Google, turn off Personalized ads in My Ad Center for each account you use.
- Handle signed-out profiles. In each browser or shared-device profile that stays signed out, disable personalization separately for Search, YouTube, and Web.
- Review the operating system. On Android, disable the Ads privacy features you do not want. On iPhone, configure Tracking and Apple Advertising independently.
- Review the browser. In Chrome, check third-party cookies, ad topics, and site-suggested ads.
- Check other apps. A social, shopping, streaming, or news app can have its own advertising controls that are outside Google My Ad Center, Android Ads privacy, or Apple Advertising.
- Recheck after account changes. Switching accounts, adding a work profile, creating a new browser profile, or using a private browsing environment can put you under a different scope.
What you should expect after switching settings off
Ads will usually remain
Disabling personalized ads changes how ads are selected, not whether advertising exists. Google can use contextual signals such as the page topic, the time of day, your location, a recent video, or the search you are actively performing. Apple likewise says its Personalized Ads switch may reduce relevance without reducing the number of ads.

Google’s setting has a defined boundary
The signed-in Google switch applies to Google services and, where applicable, Google partner sites and apps. It does not control ads delivered by non-Google platforms or by sites that operate their own advertising systems. A third-party app can therefore continue showing ads even after My Ad Center is set to off.
Each scope can show a different result
A signed-in laptop can use the account setting, a signed-out browser can use its own local setting, and an Android app can use device-level ad features. Seeing a personalized-looking ad in one place does not by itself prove that another setting failed; first identify which scope delivered it.
How to verify that the changes took effect
- Account check: Reopen My Ad Center while signed in and confirm that Personalized ads still reads Off.
- Signed-out check: In each local browser profile, revisit the Search, YouTube, and Web sections of Ads Settings and confirm the relevant switches.
- Android check: Return to Settings > Google > All services > Privacy & security > Ads > Ads privacy and confirm the individual toggles.
- Chrome check: Reopen Settings > Privacy and security and verify the cookie, ad-topic, and site-suggested-ad choices.
- iPhone check: Verify both Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking and Settings > Privacy & Security > Apple Advertising.
- Scope check: Note which account, browser profile, device, or app displayed the ad before deciding that a control was ineffective.
Common problems and the right fix
“I turned off personalization, but I still see ads.”
That is expected. The settings limit personalization signals; they do not promise an ad-free service. Contextual selection can still use the content or activity associated with the page or service.
“The change worked on my phone but not my computer.”
Confirm that both devices use the same Google account. If the computer is signed out, its local Ads Settings apply instead. If it uses a different account, change that account’s My Ad Center setting as well.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
“Chrome still shows personalized-looking ads.”
Check whether the ad came from a Chrome page, an installed app, or a site with its own ad system. Chrome controls affect the browser only; they do not govern independent app advertising or every site-level control.

- 【Reduce Safety Risks】Cable tray under desk keeps all plugs away from your kids, no more worry about tripping. Using 2 holes wire tray saves extra space, helps you easily cabling and wire protection. The mesh design is not easy to accumulate dust, but avoids safety accidents caused by messy wires.
“An Android app still displays ads after I disabled Ads privacy.”
Android’s three toggles limit specific topic, suggestion, and measurement mechanisms. They do not block all advertising. Look for the app’s own privacy or advertising settings if you need a change within that app.
“I disabled iPhone tracking but Apple ads did not change.”
The Tracking permission and Apple Advertising are separate. Configure Personalized Ads under Apple Advertising if your goal is to change Apple’s ad relevance; configure Tracking if your goal is to limit cross-company app and website tracking.
“A website broke after I changed Chrome cookies.”
Cookie restrictions can interfere with services that depend on third-party cookies. Revisit Chrome’s third-party-cookie control and allow the affected site when necessary, instead of undoing the unrelated ad-topic and site-suggestion choices.

A practical privacy decision guide
Choose the smallest set of changes that matches your goal:
- Stop Google from using account activity for personalized Google ads: Turn off Personalized ads in My Ad Center.
- Use a shared or signed-out browser with less Google ad personalization: Turn off personalization separately in Search, YouTube, and Web Ads Settings.
- Reduce Android’s topic, suggestion, and measurement signals: Disable the three relevant options under Android Ads privacy.
- Reduce browser-based personalization: Review Chrome’s ad topics, site-suggested ads, and third-party-cookie settings.
- Limit cross-company tracking by iPhone apps: Disable Allow Apps to Request to Track and review individual app permissions.
- Make Apple ads less personalized: Turn off Personalized Ads under Apple Advertising.
- Remove advertising entirely: These switches are not designed to guarantee that result; they limit personalization or tracking mechanisms while contextual and independent advertising can remain.
Privacy limits worth keeping in mind
No single switch represents all advertising technology on a modern device. Google account settings, Google’s signed-out controls, Android features, Chrome features, iPhone permissions, Apple’s advertising system, and individual apps can each operate under different rules. The most reliable approach is to identify the scope first, change the matching control, and verify that control in the same account, profile, device, or app.
