Turning off Google Maps Timeline stops your device from saving its location to that trip history. It does not turn off every Google location-related setting, and Google’s documentation does not promise that it will free 6 GB of storage. That figure should be treated as one author’s reported result, not a typical or guaranteed outcome.
What “Location History” means in Google Maps now
Google now calls the feature Timeline in Maps. “Location History” is its older, still-familiar name, and may appear in some Google help pages or settings. When Timeline is enabled for a signed-in account and device, it can automatically save visits and routes. Google says Timeline is off by default. Google Account Help explains what Timeline saves and how it works.
Turning Timeline off prevents that device from saving its location to Timeline. Google puts it directly: “When Timeline is off, your device doesn’t save its location to your Timeline.” This is a change to one history feature, not a blanket switch for all location collection.

The reported 6 GB reduction is a personal, device-specific result; it is not independently established by Google’s documentation. Google describes Timeline data as saved on the device and offers an encrypted backup, but does not state that turning Timeline off frees a particular amount of space. Nor does switching it off necessarily remove records already saved.

To understand a storage change on a particular phone, you would need the device and software versions, the storage category measured, the before-and-after figures, whether Timeline was merely turned off or its history deleted, and any other cleanup performed. Without those details, the 6 GB figure cannot be treated as a reproducible result or attributed to the setting alone.
Turn off Timeline on Android
In Google Maps, open your Timeline settings and choose whether to stop future saving only or also request deletion of existing activity. Google notes that labels can vary as settings roll out, so the exact wording may differ by account or app version.

- Open Google Maps and tap your profile picture or initial.
- Tap Your timeline, then More.
- Choose Location & privacy settings.
- Tap Timeline is on and choose Turn off to stop future Timeline saving, or Turn off and delete activity if you also want to request removal of existing Timeline history.
To manage existing records without using the combined option, the same settings offer Delete all Timeline data and Delete range of Timeline data. Google also provides auto-delete choices for 3, 18, or 36 months. See Google Maps Help: Manage your Timeline data for its current instructions.
Choose between turning it off and deleting history

Google describes Timeline deletion as permanent and unrecoverable. A copy may remain on another device or in a Timeline backup, so check your devices and backup situation before deleting records you may want later. Turning Timeline off or deleting its history does not remove location data saved through other Google services or settings. Google Maps Help covers deletion and backup behavior.

What turning off Timeline does not stop
Several Google controls are separate from Timeline. Google says turning Timeline off does not change Google Location Services, Location Sharing, or Find Hub. If Web & App Activity is on, location-related information may still be saved as part of activity across Google sites, apps, and services. Search Services History settings may include general-area or IP-derived location information; photos may also contain location depending on camera settings. Menu names and availability can vary as Google rolls out settings.

- Web & App Activity or Search Services History: Review account activity controls for location-related information associated with Google services. Google’s Search Services History help describes the relevant activity settings.
- Google Location Services: Review the Android device-level location settings separately from Maps Timeline.
- Location Sharing: Check whether you are sharing your live location with other people.
- Find Hub: Review the device-finding setting; Timeline does not control it.
- Photos: Check camera location settings and whether saved photos include location information.
