To remove the 3D buildings, overpasses, and terrain that appear while you drive, open Google Maps on your phone and go to Profile picture or initial > Settings > Navigation > Map display > Map detail. Turn off 3D, or choose the standard/2D detail option if that is what your app shows. On Android, also switch off Raised buildings routes if buildings still rise along the route.
That mobile setting does not control the desktop website. Google Maps on a computer uses separate 2D and 3D view controls. A floating preview card at the bottom of the map is another feature entirely and must be dismissed separately.
First, identify what you want to turn off
Google uses several different visual effects that can be described as “immersive.” Choosing the wrong control leaves the effect in place, so match the symptom before changing settings.

Google’s own navigation documentation describes the mobile feature as 3D map details. It is not the same product as the separate “Immersive View” previews that may appear for selected places.

Turn off 3D navigation details on Android
Disable the 3D map detail
- Open the Google Maps app.
- Tap your profile picture or initial in the upper-right corner.
- Tap Settings, then Navigation.
- Scroll to Map display and open Map detail.
- Turn off 3D. If your version presents choices instead of a switch, select the ordinary or 2D map detail.
Start a new driving route to check the result. The change concerns the detail rendered during navigation; it does not necessarily remove every three-dimensional image you may see while exploring the map outside navigation.
Disable raised buildings separately
If buildings still appear lifted or extruded along the route, return to Settings > Navigation and turn off Raised buildings routes. Google lists this as a separate Android control, so switching off 3D map detail does not guarantee that raised route buildings will also disappear.
What Android’s 3D setting changes
Google says the navigation detail can include buildings, overpasses, terrain, and other 3D elements. While those details are enabled during navigation, traffic and satellite layers are turned off for that drive. Your choices for those layers on the Maps home screen are retained; the layer change is specific to the navigation display.
The documented Android availability is limited to the United States, certain device types, and Google Maps version 26.27 or later. The feature is shown during active driving navigation on a mobile device and Android Auto, not as a permanent 3D overlay in every Maps screen.
Verify the Android change
End any route that was already running, close the navigation screen if necessary, and start a fresh driving route. A route that was started before the preference changed can continue using its existing renderer. Compare the map after turn-by-turn navigation begins, because the 3D detail setting applies to the navigation presentation rather than every map screen.
Return to the standard view on iPhone or iPad
Use the iOS navigation setting
- Open Google Maps.
- Tap your profile picture or initial.
- Choose Settings, then Navigation.
- Under Map display, tap Map detail.
- Turn off 3D, or choose the standard/2D detail option when that is the label in your app.
Run a route while the vehicle is moving or use the navigation preview to verify that the map has returned to its flatter presentation.
iPhone compatibility and layer behavior
Google’s iPhone documentation lists 3D navigation details for iPhone 13 Pro or iPhone 13 Pro Max and iPhone 14 or later, with availability limited to supported cities. The feature appears during active driving navigation on the iPhone and through CarPlay. As on Android, enabling it turns off traffic and satellite layers during navigation.

If Map detail or 3D is absent, that can indicate an unsupported iPhone model, city, app build, or account rollout rather than a problem with your settings. Updating Maps may change the labels, but it cannot make an unsupported device or location eligible.
What to check on an iPad
The same navigation path is used when the Google Maps app exposes the setting on an iPad: profile picture or initial, Settings, Navigation, Map display, then Map detail. Google’s published eligibility details specifically name iPhone models and supported cities, so an iPad that does not show the option should not be assumed to support the feature. The absence of the control is an availability signal, not proof that the app is malfunctioning.
Use 2D mode on the Google Maps desktop website
The phone instructions do not apply to Google Maps in a desktop browser. Desktop Maps has independent 2D and 3D modes. Google describes 2D mode as the view without 3D images or WebGL.
Switch from 3D to 2D
- Open Google Maps in your desktop browser.
- Change to the Satellite map if the map controls require that view for the globe option.
- Enable Globe view if it is available in the map controls.
- Use the on-map 2D control to leave 3D mode.
The exact control placement can vary with browser window size and the current Maps interface. The important distinction is that desktop 2D mode is a view control, not the mobile Navigation > Map display > Map detail preference.

Satellite imagery, tilt, and globe navigation can make a map look more dimensional even after you leave the dedicated 3D mode. Select the ordinary map layer and keep the view in 2D if you want the least visually complex presentation. Desktop navigation and mobile driving navigation do not share every display preference.
Desktop 2D mode is not a setting that disables 3D navigation details on a phone. Likewise, turning off 3D in the mobile Navigation menu does not force a computer browser into 2D mode. Treat the two controls as separate because they belong to different interfaces.
If the “immersive” item is a floating preview card
A card fixed near the bottom of the map may be a place or route preview rather than 3D navigation. It can appear while browsing a destination, before navigation starts, and on interfaces where Google is previewing visual content.

Dismiss the current preview
A Google Maps Community Product Expert advised swiping down on the floating preview to minimize it or tapping its X. That is community advice, not a documented universal switch, so the gesture may differ by device, app version, or the type of preview currently open.

The same community response suggested opening Settings > Video settings > Allow autoplay and choosing Off. Use this only when the unwanted element is an automatically playing preview. It does not disable 3D buildings during active turn-by-turn navigation.
To tell the two situations apart, ask whether a turn-by-turn route is actively running. Buildings, overpasses, and terrain surrounding the route point to Map detail > 3D. A card covering the lower part of the map, especially while looking at a place before navigation begins, points to a preview. Dismissing the card will not change how a later driving route is rendered.
Troubleshoot when the standard view does not stay in place
The 3D option is missing
- Confirm that you are in the Google Maps mobile app, not the desktop website.
- Check that you are looking under Settings > Navigation > Map display; the control is not in general map-layer settings.
- On Android, Google documents the feature for the United States, certain devices, and Maps version 26.27 or later.
- On iPhone, Google lists iPhone 13 Pro or Pro Max and iPhone 14 or later, with supported-city limits.
- Install the latest Maps update available for your device, then reopen the app. An update can change wording or placement, but eligibility still depends on Google’s rollout.
- Make sure you are checking while signed into the account and using the device on which the effect appears. Availability can differ by device and location.
Buildings remain raised after 3D is off
On Android, check Raised buildings routes separately. It is an independent navigation setting and is the first control to inspect when the remaining effect is specifically raised structures along the route.
Traffic or satellite disappeared
This is expected while mobile 3D navigation details are enabled: Google says those layers turn off during the active navigation session. Turning off 3D should allow the ordinary navigation layer behavior to return on a subsequent route. The home screen’s saved layer selection is not necessarily changed.

Maps changes to 2D by itself
Google says that if 3D rendering causes performance problems such as overheating or a lost connection, Maps can switch to 2D for the rest of that drive. It may restore 3D on the next drive after performance recovers. If you prefer 2D every time, use the Map detail setting rather than relying on this automatic fallback.
Android Auto or CarPlay still looks different
3D details are documented for active navigation on Android Auto and CarPlay, but the phone remains the place where the relevant navigation preference is configured. Change the setting in the Maps app, end the current route, and start navigation again in the vehicle interface. A route already in progress may retain its current rendering until it is restarted.

The app shows 2D only during one trip
A temporary switch to 2D can be Google’s performance fallback. The help documentation says overheating or a lost connection can trigger 2D for the remainder of that drive, with 3D potentially returning on the next drive. That behavior is different from a preference you deliberately changed. If you want the flat view consistently, disable 3D in Map detail rather than waiting for the fallback.
The map is flat but a preview still covers it
That combination usually means the 3D navigation renderer is already off and the remaining item is a floating preview. Use the preview’s X or swipe it down as described by the community Product Expert. Do not keep changing the Navigation map-detail setting when the visible problem is a card at the bottom of the screen.
What “standard view” means on each platform
- Android: the ordinary navigation detail selected after 3D is disabled; turn off raised buildings separately if needed.
- iPhone and iPad: the standard or 2D map detail option shown under Map display, subject to Google’s device and city availability.
- Desktop browser: Google Maps 2D mode, which omits the dedicated 3D images and WebGL presentation.
- Floating preview: a dismissed or minimized card, not a change to the map’s navigation renderer.
These controls are independent. Changing desktop 2D mode will not alter phone navigation, and dismissing a preview card will not disable 3D route details.
When Google may show 3D again
Three-dimensional navigation is conditional on platform, location, device, app version, and whether an active driving route is running. A setting may therefore be present on one phone but not another, or appear only in particular cities. Performance fallback can also make one drive look flat and a later drive return to 3D. Check the platform-specific setting whenever the map presentation changes after an update or device switch.
Google’s Android help identifies Maps version 26.27 and above for the documented 3D-detail feature, along with United States availability and certain device types. The iOS help identifies iPhone 13 Pro or Pro Max and iPhone 14 or later, with supported-city restrictions. These are eligibility conditions, not guarantees that every compatible phone will display the control in every location.

Does turning off 3D restore traffic and satellite layers?
Google says traffic and satellite layers turn off during navigation when 3D details are enabled. Disabling 3D should permit the ordinary layer behavior on a subsequent route; your home-screen layer choice is not necessarily erased.
