Turn off notification silencing from the taskbar: in Windows 11, open Notification Center and switch off Do not disturb; in Windows 10, open Action Center and cycle Focus assist to Off. If it turns back on, check the automatic rules for your Windows version.
Turn off Do not disturb in Windows 11
- Select the clock or notification bell on the taskbar, or press Windows key + N, to open Notification Center.
- Select the bell control marked zZ to switch Do not disturb off.
- If it turns on again, open Settings > System > Notifications, then expand Turn on do not disturb automatically. Turn off only the condition causing the behavior.
Windows 11 can enable Do not disturb automatically during scheduled hours, when duplicating a display, while gaming or using a full-screen app, or for a period after a Windows feature update. Review those conditions in the automatic settings. Microsoft’s notification and Do not disturb instructions explain these options.
Turn off Focus assist in Windows 10
- Select the Action Center icon on the taskbar. If you do not see the Focus assist tile, select Expand.
- Select Focus assist repeatedly until it displays Off. The setting cycles through Priority only, Alarms only, and Off.
- To stop it activating automatically, open Start > Settings > System > Focus assist and review Automatic rules.
Off is the setting for receiving all notifications. For Microsoft’s instructions on Focus assist and Focus sessions, see Focus: Stay on Task Without Distractions in Windows and Make it easier to focus on tasks.

Windows can activate notification silencing based on automatic conditions, so switching it off manually may not prevent a later activation. In Windows 11, check the automatic conditions under Settings > System > Notifications > Turn on do not disturb automatically. In Windows 10, review Settings > System > Focus assist > Automatic rules. Disable the rule that matches when the silencing returns rather than turning off unrelated rules.

A Windows 11 Focus session also turns on Do not disturb. If Do not disturb was already on before the session started, it remains on after the session ends. Check the Notification Center control when the session is over. Microsoft documents this Focus-session behavior.
What happens to notifications while silencing is on
Do not disturb does not necessarily discard notifications. Microsoft says other notifications are sent to Notification Center while it is on; priority settings can also allow selected calls, reminders, or apps through. If you want only certain alerts to interrupt you, adjust priority notifications instead of switching Do not disturb off entirely. See Microsoft’s guide to notifications and Do not disturb.

If notifications still do not appear
Turning off Do not disturb or Focus assist does not override the main notifications switch or an app’s individual permission. In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Notifications, make sure notifications are enabled, and check the app under Notifications from apps and other senders. If the issue is with Outlook, check both Windows notification settings and Outlook’s own notification setting, as described in Microsoft’s Outlook notification troubleshooting guide.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. That does not change the steps for turning off Focus assist, but it is relevant if you are still using Windows 10. See Microsoft’s Windows notification guidance.
