If your Firefox version still includes the advanced preference, you can try disabling Nova by changing browser.nova.enabled to false in about:config. This is a reported workaround from a Mozilla Support discussion, not a documented, permanent opt-out; Mozilla warns the preference may be removed and that changing advanced settings can cause problems. For a lower-risk change, use Firefox’s Proton theme or adjust Compact Mode and other appearance settings.
What the Firefox Nova change means
Mozilla calls the redesign Project Nova. The desktop and mobile rollout began September 29, 2026, with the launch associated with Firefox 157. Mozilla describes softer tabs, rounder controls, updated icons, different spacing, and a refreshed color palette. Mozilla’s design overview and its Add-ons Community Blog describe the redesign and rollout.
Nova is not just a color theme: it changes interface elements. That distinction matters because the Proton theme can change the appearance, but Mozilla presents it as a theme rather than a complete rollback.
Try the reported about:config workaround
A Mozilla Support discussion reported that changing browser.nova.enabled to false restored the previous design elements. The discussion does not establish that the preference is available in every Firefox version or will remain available. Check for it in your installed version before relying on the workaround. Mozilla Support’s discussion also includes a moderator’s warning that advanced preference changes can cause problems or strange behavior, and that the preference may eventually be removed.

In Firefox, click the address bar, type
about:config, and press Enter. -
Read the warning shown on the page and continue only if you are comfortable changing an advanced preference.

Search for
browser.nova.enabled. -
If the preference appears, change its value to
false. Check Firefox’s interface to see whether the change took effect. If it causes unexpected behavior, return to
about:config, find the preference, and restore its original value if you noted it, or use the preference’s reset control if available.
Mozilla Support moderator Paul advised against using this preference to reverse Nova because it may be removed over time. No removal date is established, so the workaround should be treated as temporary rather than a guaranteed setting.

Choose the Firefox Proton theme
Mozilla says the Firefox Proton theme is available through Add-ons Manager for users who prefer the previous look. Open the Add-ons Manager, find the Proton theme, and apply it. It is a theme, not a full Nova-off switch, so interface changes beyond the theme may remain.

Reduce interface size with Compact Mode
Compact Mode reduces the size of tabs and the toolbar. Mozilla also describes an auto-compact option for smaller screens. This changes the density of the interface rather than restoring the entire earlier design.
Adjust colors and the New Tab page
Firefox’s theme picker and New Tab customization offer narrower ways to personalize the browser without changing advanced preferences. Mozilla outlines these options in its Firefox launch information.
