To stop your phone from using cellular data while roaming, turn off Data Roaming for the specific SIM or eSIM in your device’s cellular settings. This setting controls data; it does not necessarily block roaming calls or texts. To prevent roaming service more broadly, ask your carrier to disable roaming on the line and explain which services and charges that restriction covers.
Turn off data roaming on an iPhone or iPad
- Open Settings, then tap Cellular or Cellular Data. Labels can vary by region.
- If you use Dual SIM or Dual eSIM, tap the number you want to change.
- Tap Cellular Data Options.
- Turn off Data Roaming.
Apple defines Data Roaming as permitting internet access over a cellular data network in a region not covered by your carrier’s network. The setting is line-specific on supported dual-line configurations, so verify that you have selected the intended number. Apple also notes that some plans include roaming without additional fees; check your plan rather than assuming every roaming connection costs extra. Apple’s instructions for managing cellular data cover the setting and plan considerations.
Turn off data roaming on Android
Samsung Galaxy
- Open Settings.
- Tap Connections, then Mobile networks.
- Turn off Data roaming.
Samsung says menu names and layouts can vary, and recommends checking with your network provider for roaming charges and travel details. Samsung’s roaming support guidance provides its device navigation.

Search Settings for “roaming,” or look in mobile network or SIM settings. This is a navigation hint, not a universal menu path: labels depend on the phone, Android version, carrier, and region. If multiple SIMs are installed, confirm that you are changing the setting for the intended line.

What turning off Data Roaming does—and does not do
Data Roaming controls cellular internet access when your phone is using a network outside your carrier’s coverage. It is not necessarily a complete roaming block. Apple documents data roaming separately from an optional voice-roaming control, and available controls vary by model, carrier, and region. Apple’s iPhone guide to cellular settings explains that when Cellular Data is off, data services such as email, web browsing, and notifications use Wi-Fi only. Turning off cellular data does not establish that voice or messaging roaming is barred.
If you want to block roaming more broadly, contact your carrier and ask it to disable roaming at the account or line level. For example, Xfinity Mobile documents an account-level roaming control for voice and data. That is a provider-specific example, not a feature or billing rule that applies to every carrier.

Do not assume a device setting determines whether incoming or unanswered calls, voicemail, SMS/MMS, or Wi-Fi Calling can trigger charges. Those rules depend on the carrier, plan, country, and service. Ask your provider which roaming services the restriction blocks and what events your plan bills for. Samsung likewise advises checking roaming charges with the network provider.
Choose the right option for your situation
| Option | What it controls | When it may fit |
|---|---|---|
| Turn off Data Roaming on a SIM | Cellular data roaming for the selected line | You want to prevent that line from using cellular data abroad but may still need other services. |
| Turn off Cellular Data | Cellular data services; Apple says data services use Wi-Fi only when this is off | You want to stop cellular data more broadly, not just data roaming. This does not by itself prove that voice or messaging roaming is blocked. |
| Ask the carrier to restrict roaming | Potentially broader, line-level service restrictions; exact scope depends on the provider | You want the carrier to block roaming beyond data. Confirm which services and billing triggers are covered. |
| Use a separate travel eSIM | A separate data line, subject to device compatibility, coverage, country support, and plan terms | You still need mobile data abroad and want to limit use of your regular SIM. Apple presents travel eSIM plans as one connectivity option; check each line’s settings and provider terms. |
Apple’s travel eSIM guidance can help you check the option. Before relying on a second line, verify that your device supports it, that it works in your destination, and which line is selected for cellular data.

Check the correct line in a dual-SIM setup
When both a home SIM and a travel SIM or eSIM are active, distinguish the line whose data you want to use from the line whose roaming you want to restrict. On iPhone, select the relevant number before changing Data Roaming. Also check which line is set to handle cellular data. If your goal is to use a travel line for data while limiting the home line, confirm both choices in the phone’s cellular settings and review the home carrier’s terms.

Before you travel
- Identify the SIM or eSIM whose roaming data you want to restrict.
- Turn off Data Roaming for that line and verify the switch remains off.
- If you need a complete roaming block, ask the carrier to specify what it disables and what can still incur charges.
- If you plan to use a separate travel eSIM, check device compatibility, destination coverage, supported countries, plan terms, and the selected data line.
- Check your current plan’s roaming terms; some plans include roaming without an additional fee.
