There is no single setting that turns off every beauty filter across social apps and phones. First remove the selected Lens, Filter, or Effect in the app where you see it. If your face still looks altered, check the phone’s camera or video-call effects separately; those controls can apply independently of a social app.
Start by identifying where the effect is coming from
An altered-looking image can come from the social app’s camera, the phone’s camera processing, a video-call effect, or editing applied to a saved photo. These are separate layers, so switching off one does not necessarily affect the others.
- Check the social app first. On its camera or call screen, look for a selected Lens, Filter, Effect, Retouch, Beauty, or similar control. Choose Off, None, Original, or the unselected state if the app offers one. The exact menu depends on the app version and account.
- Compare with the phone’s native Camera app. If the image looks altered there too, inspect that phone model’s camera settings or consult its manufacturer’s instructions.
- Check video-call controls separately. A call app or the phone’s operating system may apply effects that are not controlled by the social app.
- Separate live effects from photo edits. A change to an already-saved picture does not show that future camera captures are unaffected.
To narrow it down, compare the native camera, the social app camera, and the call app. If only one changes your appearance, investigate that app’s selected effect. If several do, check the device’s camera and video-call settings for your exact model and software.
Turn off effects in Instagram and TikTok
Look for the effect control on the current camera or recording screen and clear the selected effect if an Off, None, or Original option is available. Menu names and locations can change with app versions, accounts, and regions. Current official information reviewed for this article does not establish a universal, reliable tap-by-tap route for either app, so do not assume that a feed-personalization setting controls camera effects.

Meta’s teen filter restrictions are a policy limitation, not a general switch for all users. Meta said on August 27, 2026, that after judicial approval, protections for under-18s apply in participating US states and territories on Instagram and Facebook. The restrictions block cosmetic-surgery filters and extend to extreme makeup filters; they should not be read as applying to adults, all locations, all effects, or other apps. Meta’s announcement describes the policy and its scope.
Remove a Lens or Filter in Snapchat
On Snapchat’s camera screen, remove the currently selected Lens or Filter using the control shown in that version of the app. Clearing one selection applies to that capture or current camera state; it does not establish that all appearance-changing effects are globally disabled or change effects in other apps.

Snap Inc. said in an October 1, 2020 newsroom post that its camera opens without Lenses or Filters and that creative tools can change how people look. That statement describes Snap’s stated camera behavior, not a guarantee that a selected Lens is absent from every capture. Snapchat’s Filters and Lenses support index is the place to check current app guidance.
Check phone camera effects
Samsung Galaxy
Samsung’s instructions vary by device and software. For the Galaxy A70 running Android 9, Samsung Colombia documented this path: Camera > wand icon > Beauty > Beauty: Off. Samsung’s instructions were updated August 15, 2025, and apply to that specific model and software context—not to every Galaxy phone. See Samsung Colombia’s Galaxy A70 instructions.

On newer Galaxy devices, check the model-specific camera settings rather than relying on the A70 route. Samsung’s US support guidance also describes Face effects in Gallery editing, such as brightening skin tone or enlarging eyes, and Portrait effects in Camera. Those are distinct editing and camera controls, not one universal global beauty toggle. Samsung’s guide to Galaxy photo and video editing covers those features.
Other phones
Do not assume a manufacturer offers a phone-wide beauty setting or that similarly named controls work the same way across models. Check the camera settings and support instructions for the exact model and operating-system version.

Turn off effects during video calls
iPhone and iPad
Apple documents controls for supported FaceTime and third-party conferencing calls. During a call, tap your video tile and deselect Portrait or other active effects. For a third-party conferencing app, open Control Center, select the app, and turn off the selected effects there. Availability and labels depend on the device and operating system. Apple’s video-conferencing effects instructions explain the controls.
Not every visual change is a beauty filter: Portrait primarily blurs the background, while Studio Light changes illumination. Turning those off may change the image without affecting skin retouching in a social app.
Samsung Galaxy S23 FE
The Galaxy S23 FE manual places video-call controls under Settings > Advanced features > Video call effects and lists a Face option. This is a model-specific device control, separate from a social app’s Lens or filter. Use the manual for the exact phone and software version rather than generalizing this route to all Galaxy devices. Galaxy S23 FE user manual.
Undo effects on photos already saved
A live-camera setting and a saved-photo edit are different. Apple says eligible Portrait photos can have Portrait mode effects removed in Photos; ordinary tint filters can also be edited back to Original. These actions address the saved image, not whether a future live preview or capture will use an effect. Apple’s Portrait mode editing instructions describe the photo controls.
