To stop Netflix from automatically playing the next episode on a Firestick, turn off Autoplay Next Episode in the Playback settings for the Netflix profile you use. To stop previews while browsing, disable the separate Autoplay Previews setting. Fire TV’s own featured-content autoplay is controlled elsewhere.
Choose which autoplay you want to stop
“Autoplay” can describe three different behaviors. Use the setting that matches what you see:
| What starts playing | Where it happens | Setting to change |
|---|---|---|
| The next episode | During Netflix playback | Netflix profile Playback settings: Autoplay Next Episode |
| A show or movie preview | While browsing Netflix | Netflix profile Playback settings: Autoplay Previews |
| Featured content | Fire TV interface | Fire TV Settings > Preferences > Featured Content > Autoplay |
Turn off the next episode in Netflix
Netflix’s next-episode preference is set on a specific profile through the account page; you can change it in a browser on a phone or computer. Follow Netflix’s instructions for autoplaying the next episode.
- Open the Netflix Account page in a web browser and sign in.
- Choose Profiles, then select the profile you use on your Fire TV Stick.
- Open Playback settings.
- Turn off Autoplay Next Episode.
- Return to Netflix on the Fire TV Stick. If the change has not appeared, switch to another Netflix profile and back, or sign out and sign in again.
Turn off Netflix previews while browsing
To stop previews from playing as you browse the Netflix catalog, open the same profile’s Playback settings and turn off Autoplay Previews. This does not control whether the next episode starts automatically. See Netflix’s instructions for turning preview autoplay on or off.

Turn off autoplay for Fire TV featured content
If the automatic playback is on the Fire TV interface rather than inside Netflix, use the device setting: on the Fire TV home interface, go to Settings > Preferences > Featured Content and toggle off Autoplay. Amazon documents this control in its Fire TV Stick guide. It is separate from Netflix’s profile settings, so change the Netflix setting for episodes or previews.

What to expect after disabling next-episode autoplay
Netflix says the “Are you still watching?” prompt on TVs and TV streaming devices appears after three episodes and 90 minutes of uninterrupted watching. Turning off next-episode autoplay is one way to continue watching without episodes starting automatically; Netflix explains the prompt in its help article.
Netflix lists Fire TV Stick devices as supported, but resolution and features vary by model. No particular Stick model or accessory is required to change autoplay preferences for a Netflix profile; the account setting is the relevant control.
