There is no single documented Windows switch that removes every AI-style answer from Search while keeping all traditional results. The available controls affect different things: Copilot+ PC file indexing, Microsoft-service results, and Start/search personalization. Choose the control that matches what you want to change; none is documented as a universal AI-answer toggle.

First, identify which Windows Search you mean

Windows Search can find apps and files from the taskbar or File Explorer, and taskbar Search can also show web results powered by Bing. Copilot+ PCs add semantic indexing for files, while AI-powered natural-language search and an agent are also available in the Settings app. These are distinct features, so changing one setting may not change the others.

Microsoft’s documentation describes the Settings agent as suggesting changes rather than applying them automatically: you must select Apply. Its behavior is not a general description of taskbar or File Explorer Search. Microsoft’s Exploring Windows Settings guide explains that experience.

Change Copilot+ PC file indexing

On Copilot+ PCs, Microsoft says semantic indexing is enabled by default alongside traditional indexing. To adjust what Windows indexes and searches:

#1 Best Overall
  1. Open Settings > Privacy & security > Searching Windows.
  2. Select Advanced indexing options.
  3. Adjust the locations or file types included in indexing and searching.

This changes file-search coverage. If you exclude a location or file type, files there may no longer appear in indexed searches. Microsoft does not describe these indexing controls as a way to remove generated web answers or all AI-style results. The semantic-indexing data described by Microsoft is stored locally, is not stored by Microsoft, and is not used to train AI models. See Search indexing in Windows for the documented controls and scope.

Limit results from Microsoft services

If you want fewer personal cloud results, change cloud content search in Windows Search permissions. Microsoft says this feature can include content from personal OneDrive, Outlook, and other Microsoft services. Turning it off limits those cloud-result sources; it is not documented as an AI-answer-only switch.

Change Start and search app-launch personalization

Windows 11 has a separate setting for using app launches to personalize Start and Search. The current documented path is:

  1. Open Settings > Privacy & security > Recommendations & offers.
  2. Turn off Let Windows improve Start and search results by tracking app launches.

This affects app-launch-based personalization, not Copilot+ semantic indexing or Bing web results. If the path or label differs on your version, search Settings for the quoted control name. Microsoft documents it in Privacy settings for Recommendations & offers in Windows 11.

What each control changes

Control Documented effect It does not establish
Advanced indexing options Which locations or file types are indexed and searchable; relevant to Copilot+ PC semantic indexing. A universal way to remove web or AI answers.
Cloud content search Whether results can include personal OneDrive, Outlook, and other Microsoft-service content. That cloud results and AI answers are the same feature.
App-launch tracking Personalization of Start and Search based on app launches. That semantic indexing or Bing web results are disabled.
Taskbar Search display options Whether or how Search is shown on the taskbar. That hiding the Search box restores traditional results.

If you mean AI-style web answers in taskbar Search

Microsoft documents Bing-powered web results in Windows Search, but the reviewed official guidance does not establish a current, AI-only control that removes generated answers while preserving every other web result. Hiding Search from the taskbar only changes its display, not the result behavior. For general file and app Search instructions, see Find your files and apps in Windows; taskbar display options are covered in Customize the Taskbar in Windows.

Version and menu differences

The general Search guidance covers Windows 10 and Windows 11, while semantic indexing and the described Settings AI experiences are associated with Copilot+ PCs. Settings names and locations may differ by Windows version or documentation revision. If a path above is unavailable, use Settings search for the exact feature name, and check the guidance for your Windows build before assuming a control applies to your device.
