To track competitor press releases over time, collect announcements and relevant earned-media mentions under consistent search rules, preserve the source and date for every item, then compare the same measures across fixed time periods. A press-page archive can show what competitors chose to announce; it cannot, by itself, show the full media conversation around them.

Decide what the report is meant to measure

Start by defining the competitors, announcement types, markets, languages and reporting period. Decide whether the report covers only official press pages or also third-party news and other monitored sources. These are different datasets and support different conclusions.

Write down the rules before collecting: which company names, product names and aliases count; which topics are included; and how you will handle ambiguous matches. If the search or source set changes between periods, record when and how. Otherwise, a broader query or newly added source can look like a real increase in competitor activity.

Choose sources and a collection method

Manual announcement archive

A spreadsheet or database of official announcements can be sufficient when the scope is small and the main question is what competitors themselves announced. Save the original page URL and publication date, along with competitor, topic, market and any inclusion notes. Be explicit that this is an announcement archive, not a measure of all press coverage.

Media monitoring platform

A media-intelligence platform can bring official announcements and earned-media mentions into a searchable collection, with features such as historical trends, alerts, competitor benchmarking and reporting. Meltwater describes these capabilities, including multilingual monitoring and share-of-voice dashboards, on its official product page. Those are vendor-described features, not proof that a particular dataset is complete or that a resulting report will be accurate.

Check the specific package and account terms for archive depth, source coverage, languages, geography, search controls, exports and API access. Meltwater says retention and depth vary by package and sources, and that API access depends on package and configuration. Historical access should not be assumed to be unlimited.

API or data workflow

A technical workflow can support repeatable searches, exports, streams and analytics. The Meltwater Listening API documentation describes search, streaming, exporting, analytics, filters and real-time delivery. Whether those capabilities are available to a given customer depends on access and account limits.

Meltwater’s Usage Limits documentation gives examples for inclusive API access: 12 months of historical data and up to 30,000 earned-media documents exported per month. It says API package limits are specified in the customer’s contract; where a historic-access limit is not specified, the page says customers may access the entire historic archive. The documentation also describes 12-month analytics windows unless the contract says otherwise, export-size limits and rate limits. These are documentation examples, not universal or permanent guarantees. Repeated exports count again toward quotas, so design the collection process to avoid unnecessary re-exports and verify the current terms with the provider.

Build a comparable record for each item

Keep enough context to understand both the item and the method that found it. Useful fields include:

  • Competitor name and any matched alias.
  • Publication date and, if relevant, the date the item was collected.
  • Original URL and source type, such as an official announcement or third-party coverage.
  • Topic or category, market and language.
  • The query, tagging rule or inclusion decision used.

Retain source links in the report so readers can inspect the underlying announcements and coverage. If a query, tagging scheme or source changes, log that change with its effective date; comparisons that cross a methodology change need a clear qualification.

Compare periods using stable measures

Choose measures that answer the report’s question and can be calculated consistently for each period. For an announcement archive, useful measures include announcement counts by topic and timing. For a broader monitoring dataset, you can also compare the volume or share of monitored coverage, provided the source set and calculation are defined.

  • Counts: State whether the count is of official announcements, all matched mentions or another defined item type.
  • Timing: Compare when announcements or coverage appeared, using the same date rule and time window each period.
  • Topic mix: Apply the same categories and tagging rules throughout, or disclose where they changed.
  • Share of voice: Define the monitored sources, competitors, time period and denominator. A share calculated from one source set is not automatically comparable with a share calculated from another.
  • Sentiment and reach: Name the data source and metric definition. Do not treat scores from different platforms or source collections as equivalent without evidence that they are comparable.

Platforms may offer benchmark dashboards, but an available dashboard does not remove the need to explain its inputs. A shift in measured volume can reflect a shift in coverage, query logic or archive access as well as a change in competitor activity.

Turn the numbers into a defensible narrative

A useful report separates observation from interpretation. State what changed, identify when it changed, then point to the items or measurements that support the claim. For example, “The monitored set contained more announcements tagged to product launches in the second quarter” is an observation; a claim about why the competitor made that shift requires additional evidence.

Include links to representative source items and note material coverage limits, including whether the collection is press-page-only, which markets and languages it covers, and any known changes to the archive or query. End with a focused next question to investigate, rather than presenting a plausible explanation as established fact.

Check current feature availability before relying on it

Product capabilities change, and availability can depend on account access. In a May 5, 2026 announcement, Meltwater described expanded Trends Center coverage across X, Instagram, News and Facebook, alongside YouTube channel-level insights, Substack content and speech-to-text analysis for spoken content. These are vendor-announced features; confirm current availability and access for your account before making them part of a reporting workflow. The announcement also reported more than 1.3 million prompts handled by its Mira product for customers to date, a vendor-reported usage figure rather than an independent measure.
