To change Background App Refresh on an iPad, open Settings > General > Background App Refresh, tap Background App Refresh on the next screen, then choose Off, Wi-Fi, or Wi-Fi & Cellular Data. Apple documents this menu path and its three options.
Change the Background App Refresh setting
- Open Settings.
- Tap General.
- Tap Background App Refresh.
- On the next screen, tap Background App Refresh.
- Select Off, Wi-Fi, or Wi-Fi & Cellular Data.
The menu labels above follow Apple’s documented instructions. Apple does not provide a version-by-version interface guide on that page, so labels may differ on some iPadOS versions.
Choose where apps can refresh
- Off: Disables Background App Refresh.
- Wi-Fi: Allows background refresh over Wi-Fi, not cellular data.
- Wi-Fi & Cellular Data: Allows background refresh over either connection type.
Choose Wi-Fi if you want background updates without permitting this feature over cellular, or Off if you do not want background refresh. Apple does not quantify the battery or data impact for individual apps, so the menu options alone cannot predict how much either choice will save.

Apple says suspended apps can use Background App Refresh to check for updates and new content. It does not mean that every app stays continuously active: after you switch away, an app may run briefly and then become suspended.

If you cannot change the setting or apps are not refreshing
Check Low Power Mode
Low Power Mode reduces power use by reducing or disabling some settings and features, including Background App Refresh. If refresh is not behaving as expected, check whether Low Power Mode is on. Apple’s battery guidance describes its effect.

Check Low Data Mode
Low Data Mode turns off Background App Refresh. If you want apps to refresh in the background, check whether Low Data Mode is enabled for the network connection you are using. Apple’s Low Data Mode guide explains this restriction.
Check Screen Time restrictions on a child’s iPad
Screen Time can restrict changes to Background App Activity. On a child’s iPad, a parent or guardian may need to allow the relevant change in Screen Time before the setting can be adjusted. Apple’s parental-controls guide covers these restrictions.
