You can use an HP Z2 G5 Tower as the foundation for a 1440p gaming PC, but the upgrade depends on the exact workstation configuration—not just the model name or the $150 premise. Before buying a graphics card, verify the tower chassis, installed power supply, available power connector, and physical clearance. An RX 6600 is one candidate to check, not a guaranteed fit or a promise of 1440p performance.
First, confirm it is the Z2 Tower G5
HP also sold Z2 G5 Small Form Factor and Mini workstations. This guide applies to the Tower, whose HP QuickSpecs list a PCIe Gen3 x16 slot and chassis dimensions of 14 × 6.7 × 15.2 inches (356 × 169 × 385 mm). Those external dimensions do not establish the clearance available inside a particular used machine. Check the system label and chassis before planning a card installation.
HP’s Z2 Tower G5 QuickSpecs, version 5, dated March 1, 2021, describe multiple processor, graphics, and power-supply configurations. The title’s $150 price is a premise, not a verified current price, and it does not tell you which components or accessories are included in the unit you find.
Identify the installed power supply before choosing a GPU
HP lists 350 W, 500 W, and 700 W power-supply options for the Tower G5. The workstation’s name does not reveal which one is installed. Read the PSU label or system configuration information, and inspect the actual cables before ordering a graphics card.

- 350 W: Do not assume it meets a GPU maker’s recommendation. Check the exact card’s power requirements and do not proceed unless the PSU and its connectors are suitable.
- 500 W: This matches MSI’s stated 500 W-or-greater recommendation for its RX 6600 ARMOR 8G, but capacity alone does not prove that the PSU has the required connector or that the card fits.
- 700 W: It exceeds the RX 6600 recommendations discussed here, but you still need to verify the connector, card dimensions, and internal clearance.
For one RX 6600 design, AMD specifies a 450 W minimum PSU recommendation; MSI recommends 500 W or greater for its RX 6600 ARMOR 8G. These are separate vendor recommendations for different product contexts, not a single universal threshold. See AMD’s Radeon RX 6600 specifications and MSI’s RX 6600 ARMOR 8G specifications.
Check the exact card’s connector and dimensions
AMD lists the RX 6600 at 132 W typical board power with one 8-pin power connector. Confirm the installed PSU has the connector the specific card requires. Do not treat an adapter as proof that an unsuitable PSU can safely power a card.

Board dimensions vary by model, even among cards using the same GPU. MSI lists its RX 6600 ARMOR 8G at 238 × 128 × 39 mm. Measure the open workstation and compare the chosen card’s length, height, and thickness against the available space, including nearby components and any retention hardware. The published dimensions for this MSI board are an example, not a fit guarantee for every Z2 Tower G5 or every RX 6600.
- Open the Tower and identify obstructions, slot positions, and the available card space.
- Look up the exact graphics-card board’s dimensions and power connector—not just the GPU family name.
- Compare those measurements with the actual machine, and verify the PSU’s rating and cable.
- Check whether the workstation has a card-holder or blower kit. HP says the kit is included automatically with the 700 W chassis configuration and is required for select listed graphics configurations when added aftermarket; that does not make it a requirement for every consumer graphics-card installation.
Is an RX 6600 a sensible candidate?
The RX 6600 is worth considering if the specific card’s PSU recommendation, 8-pin connector, and dimensions match the machine. AMD lists 8 GB of GDDR6 memory, 132 W typical board power, one 8-pin connector, and a 450 W minimum PSU recommendation. For the MSI RX 6600 ARMOR 8G specifically, the recommendation is 500 W or greater and the listed dimensions are 238 × 128 × 39 mm.

- Axial-tech fan design features a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
- A 2.5-slot design maximizes compatibility and cooling efficiency for superior performance in small chassis
HP’s QuickSpecs document supported workstation graphics, but that list is not validation of every consumer GPU. Compatibility for a particular used unit remains a matter of its installed hardware and the exact card you select.
Check the rest of the workstation before setting expectations
Inspect the processor, memory, and storage in the actual unit. HP documents several 10th-generation Intel Core and Xeon processor options and differing power classes; “Z2 G5” does not identify a single gaming configuration. The used machine’s condition and included parts also affect what needs to be replaced and the total cost.

- Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4. System Requirements: Minimum 850W PSU with 16-pin 12V-2x6 (12VHPWR) connector required. Verify before purchasing.
- Military-grade components deliver rock-solid power and longer lifespan for ultimate durability. Compatibility: 348mm (13.7") length, 3.6 slots, 4.3 lbs. Confirm case clearance and slot spacing. GPU bracket included.
- Protective PCB coating helps protect against short circuits caused by moisture, dust, or debris
- 3.6-slot design with massive fin array optimized for airflow from three Axial-tech fans
- Phase-change GPU thermal pad helps ensure optimal thermal performance and longevity, outlasting traditional thermal paste for graphics cards under heavy loads
Use the system’s configuration information or inspect the components directly before buying upgrades. If the workstation lacks usable storage, sufficient memory for your games, or other essentials, account for those costs rather than treating the graphics card as the entire build budget. No current GPU price or complete system bill of materials is established here.

AMD’s RX 6600 product page publishes selected game figures under the label “1080p Max Settings.” They are manufacturer-published figures, not independent results for an HP Z2 Tower G5, and they are not 1440p benchmarks. For example, AMD lists 98 FPS for The Division 2 and 138 FPS for Doom Eternal in that 1080p-labeled section. Those numbers cannot establish how a specific workstation will perform at 1440p.

The sources cited here do not provide 1440p testing for the exact combination of Z2 Tower G5 configuration and graphics card. Treat 1440p capability as something to evaluate for your games and settings using benchmarks for the exact card and a comparable processor—not as a guaranteed frame rate based on the workstation’s model name.
Quick Recap
Use this buy-or-skip checklist
- Confirm the computer is a Z2 Tower G5, not the SFF or Mini.
- Identify whether its PSU is the 350 W, 500 W, or 700 W option, and verify the actual available GPU power cable.
- Check the exact card’s PSU recommendation, connector, length, height, and thickness.
- Measure clearance in the actual chassis; do not infer internal fit from HP’s external chassis dimensions.
- Record the installed processor, memory, and storage, then budget for any required replacements.
- Look for benchmarks at 1440p for the exact graphics card and a comparable system before expecting a particular result.
