To analyze an Apple Health export with Polars, first parse its XML into typed rows, then load those rows into Polars or write them to Parquet for repeatable analysis. Polars’ documented I/O support covers tabular formats such as CSV, JSON, and Parquet; it does not establish a native XML reader. The XML parsing step therefore belongs before Polars, and no speed advantage should be assumed without benchmarking the complete pipeline on a disclosed dataset and machine.

Export your data from the Health app

Apple’s documented export route is in the Health app on iPhone: open your profile, choose “Export All Health Data,” then select a sharing method. Apple says the export is in XML format. Interface labels and steps can change between iOS versions, so confirm the current route on your device. See Apple’s instructions for sharing Health data.

  1. Open the Health app on iPhone and tap your profile.
  2. Select “Export All Health Data.”
  3. Choose how to share or save the export.
  4. Keep the original export separate from working files, and develop against a copy or a representative sample.

Apple’s export is distinct from an app querying HealthKit. HealthKit is a central repository for health and fitness data, and apps access it with user permission. Apple documents direct reads, queries, and long-running queries for app access. A Python program that parses a saved XML file is processing a file; it is not making a HealthKit query. See Apple’s HealthKit overview and Apple’s HealthKit reading documentation.

Why Polars comes after XML parsing

Polars’ documented input/output readers cover formats such as CSV, JSON, and Parquet, rather than establishing a supported native XML reader. Treat the export as XML input for a separate parser, then normalize the extracted records into rows Polars can work with. The documented options include Polars input/output and Polars sources and sinks.

This separation also makes the workflow easier to inspect: XML-specific handling stays in the parser, while filtering, grouping, and aggregation happen on a tabular structure. The exact parser and loading strategy depend on the actual export and workload; this design is a practical inference from Apple’s XML export and Polars’ documented formats, not a measured implementation.

Parse records without assuming a fixed schema

Inspect a sample export before writing field assumptions into code. Confirm its root element, record elements, attributes, metadata, timestamps, and units. Do not assume every export contains the same tags or fields, or that unit conventions are universal.

For a large file, an incremental XML parser that processes completed records and releases processed elements can avoid building a full document tree in memory. That is general XML engineering guidance, not a benchmark specific to Apple exports. Validate unexpected or malformed records and capture parse failures explicitly rather than silently dropping data.

Choose a row structure that preserves meaning

A useful normalized table can include nullable columns for record type, value, unit, start and end timestamps, source, device, and relevant metadata. Keep original attributes or a raw-record representation for fields the first version of your schema does not cover.

  • GREAT BATTERY LIFE AND FASTER CHARGING—Enjoy a smartwatch with all-day, 18-hour battery life* from sunup to sundown. Then charge up to twice as fast as SE 2* and get up to 8 hours of battery in just 15 minutes.*
  • Preserve provenance: retain source and device information when present, and record the export date, parser version, and transformation logic.
  • Normalize carefully: parse timestamps consistently and retain timezone offsets when supplied.
  • Keep units explicit: do not combine quantities with different units as though they were interchangeable.
  • Make omissions visible: represent unavailable fields as null where appropriate, rather than inventing values.

These are schema-design recommendations, not guarantees about Apple’s XML structure. Recheck the export when its source, version, or contents change.

Load manageable batches into Polars

For a workload that fits comfortably in memory, parse a bounded batch of records, convert it to a Polars DataFrame, and provide explicit dtypes or schema overrides where needed. Repeating this in batches gives you a natural place to validate rows and handle conversion errors. You can concatenate batches or write normalized output incrementally, depending on the workload.

If the normalized data will be analyzed repeatedly, Parquet is a useful intermediate format to consider. Polars documents lazy Parquet scans as well as sinks for writing data; a later query can start from the normalized file instead of reparsing XML each time. See Polars sources and sinks and Polars input/output. The appropriate format and batch size depend on your data and installed Polars version.

Use lazy queries and understand streaming limits

When reading a supported on-disk format, a lazy scan lets Polars plan a query before execution and can enable optimizations. For example, the pattern is to scan normalized Parquet, select the columns needed, filter records, and then aggregate. Polars documents the lazy API and supported scan formats in its lazy API guide.

Polars can execute eligible operations in streaming mode. Its documentation shows collect(engine="streaming") as the way to request streaming execution, while warning that some operations are inherently non-streaming or may not be implemented in streaming form. A streaming request does not make XML parsing, every transformation, or the entire pipeline streaming. Inspect the plan and measure actual memory use and runtime for the operations you run. See Polars’ streaming guide.

Keep the privacy boundary explicit

Health records are sensitive. A local file pipeline can keep processing on your machine if your parser and analysis code run locally and you do not configure cloud sync or an external analysis service. Check where the export is saved, which folders are synced, and whether any tools in the workflow upload data. Apple’s HealthKit permission model applies to apps accessing HealthKit; it does not establish how a separate downstream service handles an exported file.

Benchmark the pipeline before calling it fast

There is no established universal file size, record count, parse time, or Polars speedup for Apple Health exports. A useful benchmark should disclose the input export, machine, software versions, operations, and output, and measure the end-to-end path—including XML parsing and normalization, not just a Polars query. Without that evidence, “lightning-fast” is not a substantiated performance claim.
