To make looking and aiming feel more controllable, tune each setting separately: ordinary look sensitivity, aim sensitivity, controller deadzones, aim assistance, and field of view (FOV) do different jobs. There is no universal best slider value. Start with a repeatable in-game test, change one control at a time, and keep only changes that feel better in your game.

What each setting changes

First check the game’s settings menu or official guide: available controls vary by title and platform, and similar-looking sliders may use different scales. For example, Bethesda documents horizontal look and aim sensitivity, aim assistance, and controller thumbstick deadzones for Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. Its Fallout 76 settings guide documents X- and Y-axis look sensitivity on PC, controller aim assistance, and FOV. Those menus illustrate possible options, not a shared preset for all RPGs.

  • Look sensitivity controls how quickly the view turns during ordinary exploration.
  • Aim sensitivity, if offered separately, controls camera movement while aiming or zoomed in. Tune it independently from ordinary look sensitivity.
  • Controller deadzones determine how much stick movement is needed before input registers and how far the stick must move toward its edge to reach maximum input.
  • Aim assistance is a separate aiming aid, not another name for sensitivity. Check the game’s description and available options rather than assuming how it behaves.
  • Field of view changes how much of the scene is visible. It does not have a universally correct value in the cited guides.
  • Remapping and inversion change how input is assigned or oriented; they can be useful accessibility options alongside sensitivity adjustments.

A repeatable way to tune the settings

  1. Note your starting values. Write them down or take a screenshot so you can restore the original setup.
  2. Choose a low-stakes test. Use a safe area where you can turn the camera, track a target, and aim without combat pressure. Repeat the same movements after each change.
  3. Adjust ordinary look first. Move the camera across a familiar landmark or between two points. If small inputs make the view overshoot, reduce look sensitivity; if turning takes too much effort, raise it in a small increment. These are practical adjustments, not validated numeric thresholds.
  4. Tune aiming separately. If the game has a distinct aim or zoom sensitivity, test it while tracking a target. A comfortable exploration speed does not necessarily feel controlled when aiming.
  5. For a controller, check the correct stick and deadzones. Confirm the game’s layout to identify the camera stick. Adjust sensitivity independently from the inner deadzone, which sets how far from center movement must begin registering, and the outer deadzone, which affects how far toward the edge the stick must be pushed to reach maximum input.
  6. Set aim assistance to suit your control needs. Try the available options in the same test area, changing no other setting at the same time. The game’s own description is the best guide to what each option does.
  7. Adjust FOV, then retest. Choose a view that is comfortable for exploration and target tracking. Once you change FOV, reassess camera movement and aiming because the changed view can affect how they feel to you.
  8. Keep, revert, or refine. Keep a change only if it improves control or comfort for you. If the result is unclear, restore the recorded value and test a smaller adjustment.

Mouse and controller settings are not interchangeable

A slider number from another game is not a reliable target: games may offer different controls, use different scales, or separate axes and aiming in different ways. Mouse-and-keyboard options may include remapping and separate horizontal or vertical look controls; controller menus may instead expose stick sensitivity, deadzones, and aim assistance. Compare what each game actually labels, not just the number shown on a slider.

For a further example of configurable remapping, inversion, aim assist, and sensitivity in a first-person game, Ubisoft describes these options in its Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora accessibility spotlight, which also discusses motion sickness as a design consideration. EA’s Battlefield 6 accessibility resources provide another example of mouse and controller sensitivity and aim-assist controls; it is a shooter reference, not an RPG preset.

Use comfort as a tuning criterion

There is no supported ideal FOV or sensitivity number that applies to every player and first-person RPG. Try changes in a consistent setting and judge both precision and comfort. If a wider or narrower view makes tracking uncomfortable, choose a different FOV if the game allows it. Remapping, inversion, sensitivity, and aim-assist options can also help adapt play to individual needs; which options exist depends on the title.
