To shift carbon quantum dots (CQDs) toward green or yellow-green emission, adjust the emitting states by changing the precursor and synthesis conditions, particle or conjugated-domain size, surface oxidation or passivation, or heteroatom content. There is no universal knob: the result depends on the CQD system, and similar-sized dots can emit different colors. First clarify what “UV” means—ultraviolet excitation, ultraviolet-range emission, or blue-violet fluorescence seen under a UV lamp—because those are not the same thing.
What actually determines CQD emission color?
Carbon dots are a broad family of materials, not one structure with one emission mechanism. Depending on the sample, light emission may involve transitions in conjugated carbon domains, surface defects, molecular fluorophores, or dopant-related states. These contributions can coexist, so a color change cannot automatically be attributed to particle size or to any single surface group. A review of the proposed mechanisms is available from Yan et al. (2019).
Color is also a measured property of a sample under particular conditions. The emission spectrum can depend on the excitation wavelength, whether the dots are dispersed or solid, and the preparation and post-treatment history. For meaningful comparisons, report the excitation wavelength alongside the emission spectrum.

A UV lamp is often used to excite fluorescent materials, but that does not mean the material emits UV light. The 2024 review distinguishes UV absorption transitions from emission and notes that some UV-excited transitions relax without emitting. If a sample looks blue or violet under a UV lamp, describe that observed fluorescence by its measured emission spectrum rather than calling it UV emission.

Excitation-dependent emission is another separate issue: a sample may show a different emission peak when the excitation wavelength changes. One example summarized in a 2022 review emitted across 525–660 nm as excitation changed from 425–625 nm. That is a reported case, not a fixed color range for CQDs or proof that synthesis changed the material’s color. See Recent Advances on Synthesis and Potential Applications of Carbon Quantum Dots.
Choose a tuning strategy based on the CQD system
Change particle or conjugated-domain size
When core or conjugated-domain transitions dominate, increasing the effective conjugated domain can narrow the energy gap and shift emission to longer wavelengths; smaller domains may emit at shorter wavelengths. A 2024 review summarizes one study in which CQD size increased from 1 to 8 nm as emission shifted from blue toward red. A 2022 review also summarizes size-manipulation examples involving dots around 1.2–3.8 nm, while noting that the size trend did not apply to every material family.

Do not treat these ranges as a calibration curve for a new recipe. The 2024 review also describes particles around 2.6 nm with reported colors spanning blue, green, yellow, and red. Size can be a useful control variable, but it does not predict color on its own. Sources: You et al. (2024) and the 2022 review.
Alter surface states through oxidation or passivation
Surface groups and defects can introduce or alter emitting states, including n–π* transitions and sites involved in carrier capture and recombination. Oxidation, passivation, and functionalization are therefore plausible tuning levers, but their direction and magnitude depend on the material and treatment. Do not assume that adding more oxygen, for example, will always shift emission in the same direction.

A study of anthracite-derived CQDs interpreted blue luminescence as potentially intrinsic and green or yellow luminescence as potentially extrinsic, associated with new energy states from oxygen-containing functional groups. That interpretation is specific to the studied samples, not a general rule for all CQDs. See Jia et al. (2020).
Vary the precursor, synthesis route, or heteroatom content
The precursor and process affect carbonization, surface groups, nitrogen incorporation, and the balance among possible emitting states. A 2021 study compared classical citric-acid pyrolysis (CAP), microwave irradiation of glucose (GM), and hydrothermal treatment of glucosamine hydrochloride (GAH), and examined nitrogen-containing functionalization. Its findings show that synthesis method and starting material can affect CQD photoluminescence; they do not establish a recipe that guarantees a particular green or yellow-green peak.

The same study reported the highest fluorescence quantum yield among its compared samples for its hydrothermal samples. That is a result for those formulations, not evidence that hydrothermal synthesis is generally the best route. See Tuneable properties of carbon quantum dots by different synthetic methods.

- Define the target. Decide whether you need UV-range emission, blue-violet fluorescence under UV excitation, or visible green/yellow-green emission. Specify an emission peak or acceptable spectral range based on the intended measurement.
- Choose a starting system. Select a documented precursor and route, such as one of the CAP, GM, or GAH approaches compared in the 2021 study. Keep the starting material and base procedure fixed while investigating a particular tuning variable.
- Make a controlled series. Vary one factor—such as reaction conditions, size fraction, oxidation, surface functionalization, passivation, or heteroatom content—while holding other factors as consistent as possible. Do not infer a size effect from samples whose surface chemistry changed at the same time.
- Purify consistently and record sample state. Apply the same purification procedure to each sample, and record whether measurements are made in dispersion or in the solid state. Differences in handling or aggregation can complicate comparisons.
- Measure excitation and emission together. Record the excitation wavelength and full emission spectrum for each sample. If the peak changes with excitation wavelength, report that behavior rather than presenting one peak as the sample’s fixed color.
- Connect the spectrum to characterization. Use size and surface evidence to support a proposed mechanism. Without a matched series and relevant characterization, describe the observed color shift without claiming that size, oxidation, or doping caused it.
For every sample, report the precursor and route, reaction conditions, post-treatment, sample state, excitation wavelength, and emission peak or spectrum. Include relevant size and surface characterization so others can distinguish the measured result from a proposed explanation.
How to compare tuning approaches
No approach is established as a universal winner. Compare actual samples using the variables that matter for the application:
- Likely emission contribution: core or conjugated-domain transitions, surface states, fluorophores, or dopant-related states.
- Control variable: precursor and reaction conditions, size fraction, oxidation, functionalization or passivation, or heteroatom content.
- Emission behavior: whether the peak is excitation-dependent, and whether the sample is measured in solution or solid form.
- Practical performance: target peak, spectral width, quantum yield, photostability, batch reproducibility, dispersion or aggregation, and purification burden.
The literature supports the importance of synthesis and surface-state differences, but does not provide a universal ranking across these trade-offs. Evaluate the property your application needs in the specific CQD system you prepare.
