Start by identifying whether your Framework Laptop 12 uses a 13th Gen Intel Core processor or Intel Core Series 3, then record the operating system, BIOS, and Wi‑Fi driver or Linux kernel version. Those details determine which firmware, kernel, and troubleshooting steps apply. Diagnose Wi‑Fi connection failures, sleep drain, and active-use battery loss as separate problems before considering a replacement part.
Identify the exact Laptop 12 configuration first
Framework publishes separate firmware and Linux-compatibility guidance for the two Laptop 12 processor families. A fix for one generation is not automatically appropriate for the other.
| Laptop 12 version | Linux kernel minimum listed by Framework | Firmware rule |
|---|---|---|
| 13th Gen Intel Core | 6.1 | Use the 13th Gen BIOS and driver pages. BIOS 3.09 is marked stable/latest, released September 8, 2026. |
| Intel Core Series 3 | 7.1 | Use the distinct Core Series 3 BIOS page and compatibility guidance. |
Before changing settings, write down:
- The processor generation shown in your system information or original order details.
- Windows edition and version, or Linux distribution and version.
- Current BIOS version.
- Wi‑Fi adapter name and Windows driver version, or Linux kernel and firmware information.
- Whether the problem began after an operating-system, BIOS, driver, repair, or Wi‑Fi-network change.
- Whether the symptom occurs on one access point or on every network.
This record prevents applying 13th Gen instructions to a Core Series 3 machine and gives support staff the information needed to reproduce the fault.

Match the symptom to the right diagnostic branch
| Symptom | First checks | What the result means |
|---|---|---|
| No networks appear or Wi‑Fi repeatedly disconnects | Driver or kernel support, antenna seating, Wi‑Fi bracket position, and another network | A failure on every network points toward the laptop, driver, firmware, or physical installation. |
| Wi‑Fi works but is slow | Check 2.4 GHz versus 5/6 GHz, move near the access point, and test the local gateway | Low speed only at distance may be band or signal behavior rather than a failed adapter. |
| Battery falls rapidly while asleep | Windows SleepStudy or the Linux distribution’s sleep-mode documentation; check BIOS | Standby drain is a sleep-state or wake-source problem, not necessarily a worn battery. |
| Battery falls rapidly during active use | CPU activity, power profile, brightness, USB devices, and battery-health report | High workload or a power-hungry peripheral can explain normal battery capacity. |
Fix Wi‑Fi discovery and intermittent connections
1. Confirm software and driver support
On Windows, install the current Framework driver bundle for your exact Laptop 12 generation. For the 13th Gen Intel Core model, the researched release page lists Windows Driver Bundle v1.03 dated September 8, 2026 and a separate Windows Wi‑Fi driver package dated September 3, 2026. Confirm the live release page before installing because package contents and versions can change.

On Linux, use a distribution and kernel that support the installed Wi‑Fi card. Framework lists kernel 6.1 as the minimum for the 13th Gen Intel Core Laptop 12 and 7.1 for Core Series 3. A distribution can ship a newer kernel while still lacking a suitable firmware package, so check both the kernel and the distribution’s hardware-compatibility notes.
2. Inspect the antenna and bracket after assembly or repair
If the problem began after opening the laptop, reseating a module, or replacing a part, shut down and inspect the Wi‑Fi card installation. Framework specifically calls for secure antenna connections and the Wi‑Fi bracket installed above the module. A loose snap connector or incorrectly positioned bracket can produce weak reception, missing networks, or unstable roaming even when the operating-system driver is correct.
Do not buy a replacement Wi‑Fi card until these installation checks and software checks are complete. Record what you find and test again after reseating only the affected connections.

A 2.4 GHz connection generally travels farther and penetrates walls better, while 5 GHz and 6 GHz can provide higher throughput at shorter range. A laptop that is working on a congested 2.4 GHz network may appear defective when it is actually using a slower band.
- In Windows, open the active network’s properties to view the band, or run
netsh wlan show interfacesin Command Prompt. - On Linux, inspect the wireless interface with
iwconfigor usewavemonif your distribution provides it. - Repeat the speed test close to the access point. If performance improves substantially, investigate band steering, channel congestion, or access-point placement before replacing laptop hardware.
4. Test the local gateway before blaming the internet
First identify the router address. In Windows, run ipconfig and note the Default Gateway. On Linux, run ip route show default and note the address after via. Then ping that address.
- Windows:
ping <gateway-address> - Linux:
ping -c 4 <gateway-address>
If the gateway cannot be reached, concentrate on the wireless link, signal, adapter, antenna, or local router. If the gateway responds but websites or remote services fail, the laptop-to-router path is functioning and the next fault may be the modem, DNS, internet service, or an upstream network. Test another device on the same access point to separate those possibilities.

5. Compare with another network
Use a phone hotspot or another trusted access point briefly. Failure on one network suggests router configuration, band selection, authentication, or interference. Failure on multiple independent networks after the driver and antenna checks makes a laptop-side software or hardware diagnosis more likely.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDiagnose battery loss during sleep
Sleep drain is different from short runtime while the laptop is being used. A system that wakes repeatedly, remains in a shallow standby state, or is held active by a service can lose charge even when the lid is closed.
Windows: inspect standby activity with SleepStudy
Framework’s Windows guidance points to SleepStudy for identifying applications, drivers, and services that keep the computer active during standby. The referenced guidance discusses Windows 10, so use the SleepStudy or equivalent report tooling supported by your current Windows release rather than assuming every report layout is identical.
- Charge the laptop, disconnect unnecessary peripherals, and put it to sleep for a known interval.
- Generate the standby report using the power-report tools available in your Windows version; on systems that expose it, an elevated Command Prompt accepts
powercfg /sleepstudy. - Review wake activity, active duration, and components associated with the sleep session.
- Update or reconfigure the component that repeatedly prevents low-power standby, then repeat the same timed test.
USB devices, networking activity, scheduled maintenance, and drivers can all affect standby. Remove one peripheral at a time during testing so you can identify a cause rather than changing several variables together.
Linux: verify the distribution’s sleep mode
Framework notes that many Linux distributions do not enable deep sleep by default. The available sleep states and recommended configuration depend on the distribution, kernel, firmware, and desktop environment. Check your distribution’s current Laptop 12 guidance and verify which sleep mode is actually being used before changing kernel parameters or system files.
Do not apply a generic deep-sleep command to every Linux installation. Some systems use a supported configuration that differs from another distribution, and an unsupported parameter can cause failed wake, data loss, or a machine that appears powered off. Capture the distribution version, kernel version, selected sleep state, and measured battery drop when asking for help.

Check the 13th Gen BIOS sleep fix
For the 13th Gen Intel Core Laptop 12, BIOS 3.09, released September 8, 2026, is listed as stable/latest. Its release notes state: "Fixed an issue where PROCHOT# might fail to release upon entering system sleep." This is a relevant check for sleep behavior on that generation, but it does not prove that every standby-drain symptom is BIOS-caused. Core Series 3 owners must use the separate Core Series 3 BIOS track.
Improve battery life during active use
Check for unexpected CPU activity
Open the operating system’s process monitor while the laptop is idle and look for a process maintaining high CPU usage. Indexing, browser tabs, virtual machines, builds, video processing, and synchronization can consume far more power than a light workload. End or reconfigure a confirmed runaway task, then measure runtime again under the same workload.
Use the appropriate power settings
Windows users can select the Better Battery profile when maximum performance is not required. Lower display brightness, shorten the display timeout, and disable radios or peripherals you are not using. Check USB devices individually: some remain in a high-power state or continue drawing power while connected.
Runtime depends on configuration, software, workload, operating conditions, and power-management settings. Framework’s Laptop 12 product page explicitly warns that actual battery life may be less than test results and varies with those factors. Treat any published test figure as a controlled result, not a guarantee for your setup.
Separate a workload problem from capacity loss
Run the same application or video playback test at the same brightness and power profile after making one change. If runtime improves when CPU load, brightness, or USB usage changes, the battery may be healthy. If the laptop loses capacity quickly under a light, repeatable workload, check battery health before ordering parts.
Check battery health before replacing the battery
Windows battery report
- Open PowerShell or Command Prompt as Administrator.
- Run
powercfg /batteryreport. - Open the generated HTML report at the path shown by Windows.
- Compare Design Capacity with Full Charge Capacity and review recent usage and cycle information.
Interpret the report alongside your symptoms. A reduced full-charge capacity supports a wear diagnosis; a large overnight drop while the laptop is asleep points first to standby behavior, wake sources, or firmware.

Linux battery tools
Tool names vary by distribution. Framework identifies GNOME Power Statistics and upower as possible routes. Use the tool your distribution supports to record energy-full, energy-full-design, charge cycles when available, and recent discharge behavior. Keep the distribution and kernel version with the result because power-management support differs across releases.

Consider a replacement only when health diagnostics show substantial wear, the capacity remains low after calibration or software checks, and active-use runtime is poor under a light, repeatable workload. Framework indicates that Laptop 12 replacement parts are available, but confirm the exact generation and part compatibility before ordering. A replacement battery will not fix a Wi‑Fi driver, a loose antenna, or a system that fails to enter a low-power sleep state.

| Platform | Applicable update path | Important precautions |
|---|---|---|
| 13th Gen Intel Core Laptop 12 on Windows | Use the 13th Gen BIOS page and current Windows driver bundle. BIOS 3.09 is listed as stable/latest as of September 8, 2026. | Connect the charger and use only the package for this generation. |
| 13th Gen Intel Core Laptop 12 on Linux | Use LVFS through fwupdmgr. |
Connect AC power; firmware availability depends on the device and distribution. |
| Intel Core Series 3 Laptop 12 | Use the separate Core Series 3 BIOS and compatibility pages. | Do not apply 13th Gen firmware instructions or packages. |
Linux fwupd sequence
For a supported 13th Gen Linux installation, Framework’s documented sequence is:
- Connect the charger.
- Refresh metadata with
fwupdmgr refresh --force. - Check available updates with
fwupdmgr get-updates. - Start the update with
fwupdmgr updateand follow the restart prompts.
Framework notes that LVFS may not offer an update when the battery is at 100 percent. If no update appears despite a compatible system, discharge to about 95 percent, reconnect AC power, and run the check again. Do not interrupt a firmware update or close the lid during the update and restart process.
Windows driver updates
Install the current generation-specific bundle first, then the Wi‑Fi package if the bundle does not contain the needed version. Reboot before judging stability. If a failure began immediately after a driver update, record the previous version and use the supported rollback option while you investigate; do not mix packages intended for another Laptop 12 generation.
Common mistakes that slow diagnosis
- Changing several variables at once: Installing a driver, changing router bands, and modifying sleep settings together makes the result impossible to attribute. Change one category at a time.
- Assuming every battery problem is battery wear: Sleep drain and high CPU use can exhaust a healthy pack.
- Using an old generic runtime benchmark: Laptop 12 runtime varies with configuration and conditions, so a figure from another Framework model is not a guarantee.
- Applying the wrong generation’s firmware: Verify the processor family before downloading BIOS files.
- Ignoring the local gateway: An internet outage and a broken wireless link require different fixes.
- Changing Linux kernel parameters without distribution guidance: Deep-sleep behavior is distribution- and version-dependent.
When to contact Framework support
Escalate through Framework’s support hub, Knowledge Base, community forum, repair guides, or support-request form when the issue persists after the model-appropriate checks. Include:
- Laptop 12 processor generation and serial or configuration identifier if requested by support.
- Operating system and version, Linux distribution and kernel where applicable.
- BIOS version, Wi‑Fi adapter, driver or firmware version, and relevant Windows driver-bundle version.
- Exact symptom, frequency, and whether it occurs on another network or after a clean restart.
- Gateway-ping results and the band used during a Wi‑Fi test.
- Battery report, measured sleep interval and percentage drop, or Linux power-statistics output.
- Any recent repair, hardware change, operating-system update, or firmware update.
- The steps already tried and the result of each step.
This information lets support distinguish a network-side problem from an antenna or adapter issue, and a worn battery from a standby or power-management fault.
