If Task Manager closes, freezes, or shows a blank pane when you select Performance in Windows 11, the available Microsoft guidance does not identify a cause or confirm a set of fixes specific to that failure. Treat the steps below as evidence-led troubleshooting, not twelve proven cures. First note exactly what happens, whether other Task Manager tabs work, and what changed shortly before the problem began. Also check whether other Windows features or the display are affected.
1. Identify what “crashes” means
Before changing anything, reproduce the issue once and describe the result. Task Manager is a built-in Windows tool for monitoring performance and managing processes, but the Microsoft sources available for this issue do not document a Performance-tab-only crash.
- Does Task Manager close, stop responding, or remain open with a blank Performance pane?
- Do the Processes, App history, Startup apps, Users, Details, and Services tabs open normally?
- Does the failure happen every time, or only after Task Manager has been open for a while?
- Is there an error message, a visible freeze, or an entry in Windows’ reliability or event information at the time of failure?
These observations help distinguish a tab-specific symptom from a wider Windows or display problem; they do not establish a cause on their own.

2. Check what changed and how widespread the problem is
Write down when the problem started and whether it followed a Windows update, display-driver change, newly installed app, hardware change, or other system change. Check whether other Windows features are malfunctioning, too. This timeline is a practical way to choose a relevant troubleshooting path, not a Microsoft-confirmed causal checklist for this Task Manager failure.

3. Check Windows Update when an update is relevant
If updates are pending or the problem began around an update, check Windows Update and install appropriate available updates. If Windows Update itself reports an error, use Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooting guidance. These are general maintenance and update-repair steps; Microsoft does not identify them as a guaranteed fix for a Performance-tab crash.
4. Investigate the display driver only if the display is flickering
Microsoft’s display-driver diagnostic applies to screen flickering, not to a Task Manager tab that fails without display symptoms. If the whole display flickers, open Task Manager and observe whether it flickers along with the rest of the screen. Microsoft says that distinction can help separate a display-driver problem from an incompatible app; it does not diagnose a non-flickering, tab-only failure. Follow the conditional steps in Microsoft’s screen-flickering guidance.

Match driver changes to the timeline
If flickering began after a recent driver update, Microsoft advises considering a driver rollback. Otherwise, its guidance discusses updating or uninstalling the display driver. Choose an action that fits the timing and symptoms rather than removing a driver without a reason. Driver changes are not established as a fix for an isolated Performance-tab crash.

Consider Microsoft’s built-in DISM and System File Checker (SFC) checks if more than Task Manager is malfunctioning and corrupted or missing system files are plausible. Microsoft notes that missing or corrupted critical Windows system files can cause the operating system to malfunction. Run DISM first; Microsoft explains that it can supply files needed to repair corrupted files, after which SFC checks and repairs protected system files.

- Open Command Prompt as an administrator.
- Run
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealthand wait for it to complete. - Run
sfc /scannowand wait until verification finishes.
Use Microsoft’s System File Checker instructions for the supported procedure. These commands are general Windows repair tools, not a confirmed cure for this particular Task Manager symptom.
6. Review recovery options only when the evidence justifies them
A recent system change or wider Windows failure may make it reasonable to review Windows recovery options. Microsoft’s recovery guidance addresses broader situations such as unexpected restarts, stop-code errors, or blank screens—not a Performance-tab-only crash. Start with the guidance that matches the actual symptoms: unexpected restarts and stop-code errors or blank screens. Do not treat a restore or other recovery action as a targeted fix unless the timing and wider symptoms support that choice.

7. Gather useful details if Task Manager still fails
If the problem persists after relevant checks, record details that make the failure reproducible and useful to support staff:
Recommended Free Tools
- Windows version and build, plus the computer model or hardware configuration.
- Display adapter and driver version, if display symptoms are involved.
- The exact steps that trigger the failure and whether other Task Manager tabs work.
- Whether Task Manager exits, freezes, or displays a blank pane, and any error or crash details shown.
- Recent Windows, driver, app, or hardware changes and the checks already performed.
The Microsoft sources cited here do not provide a direct incident-specific escalation path for a Performance-tab-only crash. These details help describe the issue accurately when seeking support.

Why this guide does not list twelve guaranteed fixes
The “12 ways” framing is not supported by the available evidence: Microsoft’s published material does not establish the cause of this exact failure or validate twelve remedies for it. Avoid risky or unrelated steps—such as registry edits, deleting Task Manager configuration files, third-party optimizer downloads, BIOS changes, driver-cleaning utilities, or reinstalling Windows—unless separate evidence and a symptom-based reason justify them. They are not established fixes for this specific crash.
