Start by checking for an AT&T outage, then restart the gateway and compare AT&T’s gateway speed test with a test on your device. That comparison helps separate a possible connection-to-AT&T issue from weak Wi‑Fi or a problem affecting just one device; it does not, by itself, prove the cause.

1. Check for an outage and inspect the gateway lights

Before changing network settings or buying equipment, check AT&T’s internet troubleshooting page for its outage checker and gateway status-light information. If AT&T reports an outage, follow its updates instead of repeatedly resetting the gateway. If no outage is reported, continue with a restart and speed comparison.

2. Restart the gateway safely

A restart briefly disconnects Wi‑Fi and devices using the internet. AT&T’s restart instructions say to unplug the gateway’s power, wait 20 seconds, reconnect it, and allow it to restart. AT&T’s general troubleshooting page says the process may take up to 10 minutes.

  1. Unplug the gateway or hub’s power cord.
  2. Wait 20 seconds.
  3. Reconnect power and wait for the gateway to return to service. Avoid unplugging it again while it is restarting.

AT&T also lists restart options in Smart Home Manager for some gateway models. Availability depends on the model; use the power-cord steps if that option is not shown.

3. Compare the gateway test with a device test

AT&T’s speed test offers two measurements. The equipment test measures between the gateway or hub and AT&T’s network. The device test measures from a phone, computer, or other device to the internet, and may use Wi‑Fi, wired broadband, or cellular.

Test What it measures What a result can help you check
Gateway or equipment test Between the AT&T gateway or hub and AT&T’s network Whether the connection reaching the gateway appears slow
Wired device test From a device connected to the gateway by Ethernet to the internet Performance without that device’s Wi‑Fi link in the path
Wi‑Fi device test From a device over the home Wi‑Fi connection to the internet Performance over Wi‑Fi in that location, on that device
Cellular device test From a device using its cellular connection to the internet Whether the same device can reach the internet outside the home network

Run AT&T’s equipment test while signed in, then test a device. For a useful comparison, use the same device and location where possible, and note whether it is wired, on Wi‑Fi, or on cellular. A compatible computer connected by Ethernet removes the home Wi‑Fi link from that device’s test; a Cat 6 cable is one optional way to make that connection if the device has an Ethernet port or a compatible adapter.

If the gateway result is reasonable but a Wi‑Fi result is poor, that points toward a possible Wi‑Fi, location, or device issue rather than proving a fiber-line fault. If the gateway result is also poor, or service remains unavailable after the restart, contact AT&T to investigate the account, equipment, or service. These comparisons help narrow down where to look; they are not a definitive line diagnosis.

4. If wired performance is good but Wi‑Fi is weak

AT&T notes that Wi‑Fi performance can vary with the number and use of connected devices, device age and type, distance from the gateway, walls and floors, building materials, and interference. A weak result in one room does not, on its own, establish a problem with the fiber connection.

  • Test near the gateway, then compare with the room where the problem occurs.
  • Temporarily disconnect devices that are not in use and see whether performance changes.
  • Consider whether walls, floors, construction materials, appliances, or nearby Wi‑Fi networks may affect the signal.
  • Use Smart Home Manager to check Wi‑Fi signal reach and manage network equipment, if available for your service.

AT&T describes these connection factors and its signal tools on its connection optimization page. Check signal reach before considering an extender or mesh system; an added Wi‑Fi device will not resolve an outage, a line fault, or a defective gateway.

5. When to contact AT&T

Contact AT&T if an outage is not reported but service remains down after a restart, or if the equipment test remains poor when repeated. Also seek support if the comparison does not clarify the problem or you cannot run a wired test. AT&T’s internet help page provides troubleshooting and repair routes. Its internet support options page is for small-business customers, so residential customers should use the residential support routes instead.
