If an AI assistant answers with an old preference, an unrelated past conversation, or information from a connected device or account, treat the response as a context-tracing problem. First identify which assistant produced the answer and how you opened it. Then inspect memories, past-chat personalization, custom instructions, files, connected apps, and device integrations; correct or delete the stale source; and repeat the prompt in a temporary or otherwise unpersonalized chat. A changed answer makes personalization a plausible contributor, not proof that one specific memory caused it.
Why an AI assistant can use outdated or irrelevant context
Personal AI products can assemble a response from more than the text you just typed. Depending on the product and enabled features, possible inputs include:
- Saved memories or a personalization profile.
- Relevant details inferred from previous chats.
- Custom instructions that you wrote once and forgot about.
- Uploaded files or documents stored in a library.
- Connected email, calendar, drive, browser, or other applications.
- Context supplied by a phone assistant or another device integration.
OpenAI says ChatGPT “looks for relevant context when it is likely to improve a response,” rather than searching every past conversation for every request. Its memory documentation also warns that a visible memory summary is high-level and that the Sources display under an answer may not show every factor that influenced the response. Google describes Gemini’s personalization as considering a prompt alongside custom instructions, past chats, and selected connected Google apps. Its Personal Intelligence overview says Gemini may reference or explain information from connected sources. These are descriptions of intended product behavior, not a guarantee that every answer will be relevant or correct.

A phone integration can add context even when you did not open an AI app directly. Apple’s documentation for its ChatGPT extension says a request may include the request text and attachments plus limited metadata such as time zone, country, device type, language, and the feature being used. Apple also says the extension obscures your IP address from ChatGPT while providing general location for purposes such as fraud prevention and legal compliance. Start by identifying the assistant and entry point
Do not change settings until you know which account and route produced the questionable answer. The same service can have different controls in its web app, mobile app, workplace account, or phone assistant integration.
- Record the product. Note whether the response came from ChatGPT, Gemini, or another assistant.
- Record the route. Was it typed in the assistant’s own app, invoked through a phone assistant, generated inside another app, or produced in a browser extension?
- Check the account. Confirm the signed-in email and whether the account is personal, school, business, or enterprise.
- Note the platform and region. Menu labels and feature availability can vary by plan, country, operating system, workspace policy, and staged rollout.
- Save the evidence. Keep the exact prompt and response, including any displayed source cards, file names, or connected-app references. This lets you compare a later clean test with the original.
If a label in the steps below is missing, use the product’s current settings search and official help page rather than assuming the feature is enabled or disabled.

Trace and correct outdated context in ChatGPT
Inspect Memory, Sources, and direct instructions
In ChatGPT, open Settings → Personalization → Memory. Depending on your account and rollout, you may see a memory summary, saved-memory controls, and options related to using information from chat history. Review entries for old jobs, locations, household details, health information, preferences, or projects that no longer apply.

When an answer displays Sources below it, open the list. A source may identify a past chat, saved memory, custom instruction, uploaded file, or connected application. Treat the list as a clue, not a complete audit: OpenAI says source displays may not expose every contributing factor.
Also check Settings → Personalization → Custom Instructions (the exact placement can change). Custom instructions are explicit guidance you supplied; Memory is a separate system that can retain useful details developed across conversations and other available sources. An old instruction such as “always assume I work in…” can affect every new answer even if no saved memory contains that sentence.
Ask ChatGPT to correct a fact, then remove the underlying source
You can tell ChatGPT that a remembered detail is incorrect or outdated, ask it not to use a particular detail, or edit a memory summary where that control is available. “Don’t mention this again” changes personalization behavior, but it does not delete the original chat, file, or connected-account record.

- Delete the corresponding saved memory.
- Delete the chat in which the fact was introduced; a chat deletion alone does not necessarily remove a separately stored memory.
- Check archived as well as regular chats if the product makes both available.
- Remove or edit the information in a Library file, then delete the file if it is no longer needed.
- Review connected apps and remove the relevant item at its original service when the stale information comes from there.
- Recheck custom instructions and remove contradictory or obsolete wording.
Deletion can take time to propagate across systems. If a detail continues to appear immediately after cleanup, wait, restart the app, and verify that you are using the same account and workspace before concluding that deletion failed.
Understand what each ChatGPT control does

OpenAI’s ChatGPT data-controls documentation explains the distinction between personalization, chat deletion, and model-training choices. Make changes in the control that matches the problem instead of assuming one privacy toggle covers all data sources.
Run a clean ChatGPT comparison
- Choose the unpersonalized or temporary-chat option before starting the conversation. OpenAI says this choice cannot be changed after the conversation starts.
- Ask the same question without including the old preference or supplying the disputed detail.
- Compare the response with the original, noting whether the old assumption, source card, or recommendation disappears.
- Do not add the disputed fact to the test prompt; doing so makes it impossible to tell whether personalization supplied it.
ChatGPT Temporary Chats do not create or update memories. OpenAI says they may nevertheless be retained for up to 30 days for safety purposes. Temporary-chat behavior is separate from the setting that controls model training.

Check Gemini’s personalization and connected applications
Review past-chat personalization, instructions, and apps
In Gemini, open the current personalization and privacy controls from the account menu. Review whether past-chat personalization or Personal Intelligence is enabled, inspect custom instructions, and list every connected Google app. Disable an app temporarily when you need to determine whether it is supplying the stale detail, then repeat the prompt.

Google’s Personal Intelligence page describes the feature as an eligible-user beta. The page currently states that availability excludes the European Economic Area, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and Nigeria; requires users to be at least 18; is for personal accounts rather than Workspace business, enterprise, or education accounts; and supports web, Android, and iOS. These conditions can change, so treat them as the page’s current description rather than permanent eligibility rules.
The Gemini Apps Privacy Hub describes several categories of information that may be involved, including prompts, information from apps, browsers, devices, and Connected Apps, supplemental features, and location. If a response cites a calendar event, document, email, or device detail, inspect that source directly and correct it there as well as in Gemini’s personalization controls.
Use Gemini Temporary Chat for an isolated test
- Start a Gemini Temporary Chat from the current chat or account menu.
- Ask the original question with no reference to the disputed personal detail.
- Compare the answer with the personalized conversation.
- Afterward, confirm that the test does not appear in recent chats or Gemini Apps Activity.
Google says Gemini Temporary Chats are not used for future personalization or model training. Google also says they may be kept for up to 72 hours to respond and process feedback, so this is an isolation and retention control, not an instantaneous-erasure promise. Details are in the Google announcement about Gemini past-chat personalization and Temporary Chats.
If the answer changes in Temporary Chat, personalization is a plausible contributor. It does not identify whether the cause was a past chat, instruction, connected app, or normal variation between model responses.

When Apple Intelligence or Siri sends the request to ChatGPT
Check the extension setting and account state
On an iPhone using the iOS 26 guide, open Settings → Apple Intelligence & Siri → ChatGPT. Review the Use ChatGPT control and disable the extension if you do not want supported Apple Intelligence features to invoke ChatGPT.
Use the Apple Support guide for using ChatGPT with Apple Intelligence on iPhone to match the labels on your current device. Determine whether you were signed in to ChatGPT. Apple says that, when signed in, the ChatGPT account’s privacy settings apply; the no-account path has different data handling.
Know what device context can be sent
For a request already sent through the extension, Apple documents that request content and attachments, along with limited context such as time zone, country, device type, language, and the feature used, may be transmitted. Turning off the extension prevents its use in supported features going forward; it should not be interpreted as retroactively deleting a request that was already sent or account history stored elsewhere.
If the response includes a stale file, attachment, or personal assumption, identify whether it came from the request itself, the signed-in ChatGPT account, or the Apple feature that initiated the request. Correct or delete the source in the system that owns it.

Interpret a clean-chat result without overdiagnosing
If the answer changes
A different answer in a temporary or unpersonalized chat indicates that personalization or integration context may have contributed. It does not prove that one named memory caused the first response: model outputs can vary between runs, and official source summaries can be incomplete. Continue by removing or correcting each plausible source and then repeat the clean comparison.
If the answer stays wrong
- State the current facts explicitly in a new prompt and ask the assistant to use only those facts.
- Check that you are in the intended account, workspace, country, and app version.
- Inspect files, connected apps, and custom instructions again for contradictory information.
- Verify important claims independently rather than treating a confident answer as proof.
- Report the exact prompt, route, account type, and observed source cards to the product’s support channel if the behavior persists after cleanup.
Prevent stale context from returning
- Review memory and custom instructions when your job, location, household, health information, or recurring projects change.
- Disconnect apps that are no longer needed, and remove obsolete documents from connected libraries.
- Use a temporary chat for sensitive one-off questions or when you need an unpersonalized baseline.
- Keep personalization, retention, and model-training decisions separate in your privacy checklist.
- When using a phone integration, confirm which feature is calling the assistant and whether attachments or device metadata are being passed.
- For high-consequence decisions, provide current source material and verify the result outside the assistant.
A practical decision path
- Wrong assumption appears once: repeat the prompt in a clean chat to distinguish normal variation from persistent personalization.
- Wrong assumption repeats in personalized chats: inspect memories, past-chat controls, custom instructions, files, and connected apps.
- Wrong assumption names a document, email, or event: correct or delete it at the original connected service, then review the assistant’s cache or personalization entry.
- Wrong assumption occurs only through Siri or another device feature: inspect the integration toggle, attachments, signed-in account, and device context.
- Deletion appears ineffective: allow for propagation time, restart the app, confirm the account, and use the provider’s current support documentation.
The reliable remedy is source-specific cleanup followed by a controlled comparison. No single “forget me” switch necessarily removes a fact from saved memory, original chats, files, connected apps, and device integrations at the same time.
