A GPU-powered laptop getting warm and spinning its fans faster during a game, render, or other sustained heavy task can be normal. Investigate when heat or loud fan noise persists at idle, the fan grinds or stops, performance drops during light use, or the laptop locks up or shuts down. Start with workload and airflow, then check processes, model-specific settings and updates, and the manufacturer’s diagnostics.
Why is my laptop overheating?
“Overheating” can mean anything from normal warmth under load to a cooling problem. CPU and GPU work produces heat; fans speed up to move more air. Dell says warmth after sustained use or during gaming can be normal, and that a fan may run constantly under a heavy workload if the computer does not shut down and diagnostics pass. ASUS likewise explains that CPU/GPU temperatures rise during resource-intensive applications and fan speed responds to them. These are vendor-specific explanations, not a temperature rule for every laptop.
Look at the pattern as well as the heat: does it occur only during demanding work, or also while idle or doing light tasks? Does it settle after the workload ends? Dell’s support guidance gives an environmental operating recommendation of 0°C to 35°C (32°F to 95°F), at humidity no greater than 90%, and directs owners to the specific model’s user or setup guide for exact limits. That is an ambient operating range, not a GPU temperature threshold. Dell: troubleshoot overheating and thermal issues

A louder fan under gaming, rendering, updates, or other sustained CPU/GPU work may simply be responding to the workload and resulting heat. If the noise continues with no demanding task running, check for unexpected activity and blocked airflow. Grinding or rattling, a fan that will not spin, or maximum fan speed that persists at idle are reasons to seek support rather than trying to force a different fan speed.

Why is my GPU throttling?
Thermal throttling is a protective reduction in processor speed when temperatures are high. It can occur under sustained demanding work, and a clock-speed reading by itself does not prove thermal throttling: power-saving settings can also lower speed. Dell’s support guidance states, “Throttling by itself does not indicate a fault.” It identifies throttling that begins within minutes of light use, or occurs with lockups or shutdowns, as a reason for concern. Check the workload and surface
Note whether the symptom appears during a game, render, update, or other sustained work, or also at idle. Let the task finish and observe whether fan activity and warmth ease. Place the laptop on a hard, flat surface, not a blanket, pillow, or other fabric, and keep intake and exhaust vents clear.

Check for blocked vents
Dust, hair, and debris can obstruct airflow, making cooling less effective and increasing temperature and fan noise. Follow the cleaning instructions for the exact model. Dell recommends compressed air rather than a vacuum for vent cleaning because a vacuum may generate static electricity; do not open the chassis unless the manufacturer’s model-specific instructions authorize it. Look for unexpected background activity
Open Task Manager on Windows or the relevant system monitor on your operating system and check CPU and memory use. If a process is consuming more resources than expected, investigate what it is before closing it; do not disable antivirus protection as a noise fix. Recheck fan and heat behavior after the demanding or unexpected activity has ended.

Use supported updates and thermal modes
Check the laptop maker’s support page for the exact model and install applicable BIOS, driver, and operating-system updates using its recommended channel. Review the manufacturer’s own thermal profile or fan mode. Available utilities and modes vary by model; ASUS notes that its options are model-dependent, while Dell warns that BIOS thermal settings can override or conflict with software profiles. Avoid generic BIOS changes and third-party fan-control instructions.

Run the manufacturer’s diagnostics
Use the laptop maker’s available fan or preboot hardware tests, following instructions for the exact model. Record any error codes. Fans may run loudly during a diagnostic test, and test behavior differs by vendor; noise during the test alone does not establish a fault. Dell: run a diagnostic test

Escalate persistent symptoms
Contact the manufacturer or a qualified service provider if a fan does not spin, a diagnostic reports an error, the fan grinds or rattles, or high fan speed and heat persist without a demanding workload. Repeated overheating, lockups, and shutdowns also warrant support. Shutdowns are not automatically thermal: Dell notes that power or battery problems can cause random shutdowns too.

When to stop using the laptop
Shut the computer down, disconnect the AC adapter, and stop using it if the chassis is swollen, lifting, or deformed; you notice a burning or chemical smell; or it remains excessively hot after shutdown. Do not attempt to remove a swollen battery yourself. Contact the manufacturer or a qualified service provider.
