Start by identifying whether the loss is incomplete conversion, poor selectivity, or product lost during work-up or purification. For the direct electrochemical coupling reported in Nature Chemistry on October 5, 2026, first verify the exact procedure in the paper’s supporting information: its accessible abstract does not state the operational details needed to reproduce or safely modify the reaction.
First, confirm which coupling reaction you are running
“Carboxylic acid–organoboron cross-coupling” can refer to distinct reaction platforms. The 2026 Nature Chemistry paper reports direct coupling of alkyl carboxylic acids with alkyl boronic acids using redox-matched alternating-polarity electrolysis and controlled activation of redox-active species. Its abstract also describes homocoupling, net carboxylic acid–alkene coupling through in situ alkene hydroboration, and tandem reactions with Suzuki coupling or Buchwald–Hartwig amination. These are reported reaction classes, not evidence that every substrate pair or variation gives comparable results. Read the paper and its supporting-information listing.
| Platform | What is coupled and how | What to use it for when diagnosing a yield |
|---|---|---|
| Direct electrochemical method (2026) | Alkyl carboxylic acid and alkyl boronic acid; redox-matched alternating-polarity electrolysis with controlled activation, as described in the paper’s abstract. | Use its own experimental procedure and supporting information. Do not assume a protocol for an ester-based coupling applies. |
| Redox-active ester decarboxylative coupling (2017 study) | Carboxylic acid is first converted into a redox-active ester, then used in decarboxylative cross-coupling with an organometallic partner. | Relevant only if this is the platform you actually ran, or as broad context on substrate-class comparisons. It does not establish conditions or expected yields for the direct 2026 reaction. See the 2017 systematic analysis. |
Check the starting-material identity and activation steps in your procedure, not just a shorthand reaction name. A direct acid/boronic-acid electrolysis and a redox-active ester/organometallic coupling have different activation modes; treating them as interchangeable can send troubleshooting in the wrong direction.
What should I check first when an electrochemical cross-coupling gives poor conversion?
- Retrieve the full procedure and supporting information. The publisher page for the 2026 paper lists experimental procedures, characterization, and NMR spectra, but its accessible abstract does not establish the exact cell geometry, electrode composition, waveform or current, electrolyte, solvent, concentrations, or substrate-specific results. Do not fill those gaps by guessing.
- Reconcile your setup against the reported experiment. Check scale, substrate form and stoichiometry, reagent identity and handling, cell and electrode configuration, solvent, electrolyte, and electrolysis settings. Record what was actually used so that discrepancies are visible before you change anything.
- Check whether your exact substrate pair is documented. Compare both partners, including their substitution and steric class, against the full paper and supporting information. A related 2017 study systematically analyzed redox-active ester decarboxylative coupling and treated primary, secondary, and tertiary acids as meaningful substrate classes; those outcomes do not predict the yield of the newer direct electrochemical reaction.
- Make a controlled comparison. If you identify a deviation or a likely failure point, test one documented variable at a time and use the paper’s reported experimental design or supporting data to select it. Do not presume that increasing current, adding heat, changing an electrode, or switching boron reagents will improve the result.
Separate conversion, selectivity, and isolation loss
A low isolated yield alone does not tell you why the reaction underperformed. Diagnose the stage at which material is lost before choosing an intervention. This is a general troubleshooting framework, not a side-product profile reported for the 2026 method; the accessible abstract does not identify a universal failure cause.

- Incomplete conversion: Determine whether starting material remains using an appropriate analytical method. If it does, compare the reaction you ran with the reported procedure and assess documented deviations before altering conditions.
- Poor selectivity: Establish whether material is going to other products rather than the desired coupling product. Avoid assigning a particular side reaction without evidence from your own analysis or the paper’s full data.
- Work-up or purification loss: Compare product present before isolation with the amount recovered after work-up and purification. If the product is formed but recovery falls later, focus diagnosis on those steps rather than treating it as a reaction-conversion problem.
How to compare precedents without transferring the wrong result
When evaluating a reported result, compare like with like: reaction platform and activation mode, acid substitution and steric environment, organoboron identity and substitution, electrochemical cell and operating parameters when reported, and whether the source reports conversion or isolated yield. Confirm that the exact substrate pair appears in the cited scope rather than inferring performance from a related example.
A separate study discusses difficult transmetalation and competing decomposition in some secondary alkylboron cross-coupling contexts. That work may help explain challenges in those coupling settings, but it is not direct evidence that failed transmetalation causes low yield in the 2026 radical–radical electrochemical method. See the secondary alkylboron cross-coupling study.

What the published abstract does—and does not—establish
The 2026 paper is a version of record published October 5, 2026, and reports a direct alkyl carboxylic acid–alkyl boronic acid coupling enabled by alternating-polarity electrolysis and controlled activation. The accessible abstract does not give a representative numerical yield, optimization result, substrate-specific operational settings, or a universal cause of low yield. Use the article’s full experimental details and supporting information for those particulars rather than relying on an abstract-level summary.
