Google still calls its reusable custom-instruction feature Gems; its help page says Gems will begin transitioning to skills in Gemini Apps starting in November 2026. If a Gemini skill or Gem ignores instructions or gives different answers, first check what is configured, whether edits were saved, whether attached knowledge is correct, and whether the feature works in the Gemini surface you are using. The rollout date is Google’s announced schedule, not a guarantee of when an individual account will change. Google’s transition information
First, check whether you mean a Gem or account-wide Gemini instructions
Until the transition reaches your account, look for the Gem controls and documentation rather than assuming there is a separate, fully rolled-out “skills” interface. A Gem applies reusable instructions to recurring tasks. Gemini also has a separate Instructions for Gemini feature, but Google says those instructions are not available in some features, including Gems. If you expect an account-wide preference to govern a Gem, you may be mixing two configuration layers. Google also cautions that instructions to forget or avoid topics do not always work perfectly.
Make the Gem’s instructions concrete
Vague or competing directions make it difficult to tell whether a Gem has failed or interpreted its task differently than you intended. Google recommends clear, detailed instructions for more customized responses. Describe the goal, the task, relevant background, the behavior you want, and the response format. These are useful components, not a mandatory form.
For example, instead of “Help me with reports,” specify the report’s audience, the material to use, the kind of analysis required, and whether the answer should be a short summary, a table, or a set of action items. Resolve conflicts in the instructions—for instance, asking for both “one sentence only” and “explain every step.” Google provides an instruction-rewrite aid, but review and edit any generated wording rather than treating it as automatically correct. Test the behavior in the preview, then save
- Open the Gem you are editing and review its instructions and any attached knowledge sources.
- Use the preview window to try three prompts: an ordinary request, a boundary case, and the request that previously produced a poor answer.
- Change one instruction at a time, then rerun the same prompts. This makes it easier to see which change affects the result; Google documents previewing and editing, but does not prescribe a formal test protocol.
- When the instructions behave as intended, click Save. Previewing alone does not save changes.
- Open or start a chat with the saved Gem and repeat the test there. Do not judge the saved configuration by an unsaved preview state.

Check attached knowledge files
If the Gem relies on uploaded material, confirm that the intended file or notebook is attached and that its content supports the answer you expect. A wrong, missing, or changed source can look like an instruction-following problem.

- For Google Drive files: Google says adding Drive files requires Keep Activity to be enabled and a connected Google Workspace. The Gem uses the most recent version of a Drive file, and later file changes are reflected in the Gem.
- For other supported sources: Google’s current help lists NotebookLM notebooks as an upload option. Check the actual attachment list rather than assuming a source was included.
- To diagnose a questionable answer: Ask for a specific, verifiable fact from the attached source, then check whether the answer matches the intended file. This is a practical test, not evidence of a file-sync status indicator.

- Gemini Live: Google says Gems cannot currently be used with Gemini Live. Try the Gem in a supported Gemini Apps chat instead. Use Gems in Gemini Apps
- Premade Gems: Some cannot be copied or customized. If Make a copy is absent, Google says that Gem cannot be customized. Get a quick start with premade Gems
- Age and account eligibility: Personal Google Account users must meet the applicable minimum age requirement—13 or the country-specific age. Account type and feature availability can also affect access. Get started with Gems in Gemini Apps
Identify what “inconsistent” means in your case
Use the pattern of the failure to choose the next check rather than rewriting everything at once.

Prepare a useful example if the issue persists
Google’s help pages do not give a universal escalation script or a definitive list of backend causes. If you send feedback or seek support, a compact reproduction makes the behavior easier to understand. Record:

- the exact prompt and the response you expected;
- the response you actually received, including the date and Gemini app surface;
- the Gem’s relevant instructions and the names or versions of relevant attached files;
- whether the behavior repeats in a fresh chat with the saved Gem.
What changes as Gems become skills
Google says Gems will transition to skills in Gemini Apps starting in November 2026. Its transition page describes skills as reusable custom instructions, with invocation by typing / followed by a skill’s name; it says @ invocation is expected soon. The page also describes automatic recognition and combining multiple skills. These are announced behaviors and may evolve as the transition rolls out, so follow the current in-product labels and Google’s transition instructions for your account.

Google says it will automatically recreate Gems as skills when Gems are removed, and also describes an early manual recreation workflow. If you choose to recreate a Gem early, follow the current official steps and download any knowledge files you need.
