If Bluetooth is missing, won’t pair, connects without sound, or keeps dropping on Windows 11, start with the matching symptom—not a random driver utility. Microsoft’s first recommended step is the Bluetooth troubleshooter in the Get Help app; after that, check pairing conditions, Windows audio settings, power saving, or the PC maker’s driver support as appropriate.
Start with the symptom
- Bluetooth is missing or its switch is grayed out: Windows may not be detecting the PC’s Bluetooth hardware correctly. Go to Microsoft’s steps for Bluetooth disappearing.
- A device will not pair or connect: Run the Get Help troubleshooter, then check that Bluetooth and the accessory are ready to pair.
- A headset connects but has no sound, or audio quality is poor: Check the selected output and the headset’s supported audio features.
- The connection repeatedly drops: Review power-saving settings and the Bluetooth driver.
Microsoft’s support pages provide troubleshooting instructions, not failure-rate data or comparative tests. They do not establish one cause as the most common across Windows 11 PCs.
Try the basic connection fixes first
For pairing and connection failures, Microsoft recommends starting with the automated Bluetooth troubleshooter in the Get Help app. Open Get Help, search for Bluetooth troubleshooting, and follow the prompts. Then check the accessory and Windows settings:

- Charge the accessory, bring it close to the PC, and put it into pairing mode. Pairing steps differ by accessory; use its instructions if you are unsure how to activate the mode.
- If it was paired before but no longer connects, remove it from Settings > Bluetooth & devices, then add it again using Add device.

If Bluetooth disappeared or the switch is unavailable
A missing or grayed-out Bluetooth control can indicate that the PC’s Bluetooth hardware has encountered an error. It is not necessarily a problem with the accessory. Follow Microsoft’s Bluetooth-disappeared troubleshooting guide and check detection before replacing or re-pairing peripherals.
- Perform a full shutdown, then start the PC again. A complete power-off can clear a temporary detection issue that a routine restart does not resolve.
- Check Windows Update and Device Manager for Bluetooth driver updates or device errors.
- Look up Bluetooth drivers and firmware for the exact PC model on the computer manufacturer’s support site. Firmware and driver packages vary by model.
Microsoft’s Bluetooth driver guide covers updating, reinstalling, and rolling back drivers. If an update causes a new problem, rollback may be relevant; use the manufacturer’s package for the exact PC rather than assuming a driver for another model is suitable.

If Bluetooth connects but audio is missing or poor
First confirm that Windows is sending sound to the Bluetooth headset rather than another output device. Open Start > Settings > System > Sound and select the headset under output. Also check its volume and the app’s output selection if the app has its own audio controls.
If the headset is selected but sound is absent or unsatisfactory, inspect its audio format settings and try a format supported by the device. Microsoft lists format settings as a troubleshooting option, not a guaranteed sound-quality upgrade. For higher-quality Bluetooth streaming, Microsoft also advises checking whether the headset and PC support the A2DP profile. A connection alone does not establish support for every audio capability. If the connection keeps dropping
Microsoft identifies power-saving settings, outdated drivers, and temporary system glitches among the possible causes. Check whether Energy Saver is active, then review the Bluetooth adapter’s power-management setting in Device Manager. The exact controls available can depend on the PC and adapter.
- Open Settings > System > Power & battery and check Energy Saver.
- Open Device Manager, expand Bluetooth, right-click the Bluetooth adapter, and open Properties. If a Power Management tab is available, review whether Windows is allowed to turn off the device to save power.
- Check for a current driver through Windows Update or the PC maker’s support page. Use the manufacturer’s driver for your model if one is provided.

When a USB Bluetooth adapter makes sense
A USB Bluetooth adapter is an option when the PC does not have Bluetooth hardware. Microsoft states: “If a Windows device doesn’t have Bluetooth, a USB Bluetooth adapter can be plugged into a USB port on the Windows device to add Bluetooth.” Before buying one, verify Windows 11 compatibility and any product-specific driver requirements.
