If an Apple Home accessory will not add or a HomePod keeps dropping offline, first identify the exact alert and the active hub. In the Home app, open More > Home Settings > Home Hubs & Bridges; the active hub is listed at the top. Then follow the steps for the alert you see, starting with software, account, power and network checks—not a hardware replacement.
Find the active hub and note the exact alert
- Open the Home app, tap More > Home Settings > Home Hubs & Bridges, and check which device appears at the top.
- Record the exact message shown while adding or using the accessory. Alerts such as “Home Hub Required,” “Software Update Required,” “Wi-Fi Incompatible,” and “Needs Thread Network” point to different checks.
- If several hubs appear, do not assume the newest one is active. Apple Home can select a hub automatically; turn off Automatic Selection in the hub settings to choose a preferred hub.
HomePod becomes a hub automatically after setup. An Apple TV becomes a hub after it is added to a room. Only the home owner can add a HomePod or Apple TV as a hub. Apple says iPad is not supported as a hub in the latest Apple Home. Apple Support’s home hub setup guide

“Home Hub Required” or “Software Update Required”
When either alert appears while adding an accessory, check the active hub and the device displaying the error before changing the home configuration.

- Check the Apple Account. The iPhone or iPad showing the alert should be signed in to the same Apple Account used to set up the home.
- Check Wi-Fi and interference. Confirm the device is connected to Wi-Fi and that interference is not disrupting the connection.
- Check an Ethernet-connected Apple TV. For this documented error, Apple advises connecting the active Apple TV to Wi-Fi on the same network as the iPhone or iPad.
- Review network settings and security software. If the alert persists, consider resetting network settings on the device showing it and check whether a VPN or third-party security software is affecting connectivity.
Apple’s steps for these alerts are in its “Software Update Required” and “Home Hub Required” support guide.

“Setup Failed” or the HomePod setup screen does not appear
Set up HomePod with an iPhone or iPad, not a Mac. HomePod uses the Wi-Fi network connected to that setup device, so check the phone or tablet’s connection before retrying. Apple’s setup article lists iOS 16.3 or later for iPhone, or iPadOS 16.3 or later for iPad, when setting up HomePod (2nd generation); that is a model-specific minimum in that article, not a general recommendation to use an older operating system.
- Make sure the setup iPhone or iPad is connected to the intended Wi-Fi network, Bluetooth is on, and the device is not relying on a personal hotspot.
- Keep the device near HomePod. If the setup prompt does not appear, lock and unlock the iPhone or iPad, then hold it near HomePod.
- If there is still no prompt, open Home > Add Accessory > More options > HomePod and follow the on-screen steps.
- If HomePod still does not appear for setup, reset HomePod and try again.
Also check that the Home and Apple Music apps are installed, Bluetooth is enabled, Apple Account two-factor authentication and iCloud Passwords and Keychain are turned on, and—if accessories are already set up—that you are using the home owner’s Apple Account. See Apple’s HomePod setup troubleshooting guide.

“Wi-Fi Incompatible”
On the iPhone or iPad used for setup, forget the Wi-Fi network, reconnect to it, and retry HomePod setup. If the alert concerns a 6 GHz Wi-Fi network, Apple advises using the same network name across supported 2.4, 5 and 6 GHz bands.
“Loading Accessories and Scenes” does not finish
Do not reset the entire home as an early fix. Apple says a reset-home option may appear if this loading message persists for more than 30 minutes. A home reset means adding the accessories and home settings again.

HomePod mini flashes orange repeatedly
Apple says repeated flashing orange can indicate a computer connection or a power adapter that is not rated 20W (9V, 2.22A). Use a 20W adapter and retry setup.
HomePod reports “Network Issue” or “No Internet”
- Restart HomePod.
- Confirm the modem and router have power, then restart both.
- Check that HomePod and the iPhone use the same preferred Wi-Fi network. In Home, open HomePod’s settings to review its Wi-Fi Network setting.
- Check HomePod’s signal display. Apple classifies two bars or fewer as weak; move it nearer the router or access point and reduce likely wireless interference.
- If Home reports a network mismatch, verify that HomePod and the active hub are on the same network.
These network checks follow Apple’s HomePod “Network Issue” and “No Internet” guidance.

“Thread Border Router Required” or “Needs Thread Network”
These alerts indicate a Thread capability requirement, not necessarily a Wi-Fi problem. Check whether the accessory needs a Thread border router or another Thread-enabled device. Apple lists HomePod mini, HomePod (2nd generation), Apple TV 4K (2nd generation), and Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) Wi-Fi + Ethernet among its Thread-enabled devices; model and software qualifications can apply to particular uses. A compatible third-party Thread border router may also meet the requirement.

For a battery-powered accessory, Apple says a manufacturer firmware update may be needed for iOS 18 compatibility. Check the accessory maker’s instructions as well as Apple’s Thread alert guidance.

Check Apple Home compatibility before replacing a hub
An iPad is not a supported home hub in the latest Apple Home. Apple’s update guidance also gives minimum operating-system versions for devices to keep access to an updated home: iOS 16.2, iPadOS 16.2, macOS 13.1, tvOS 16.2, or watchOS 9.2. These are compatibility floors, not recommendations to stay on those versions. Apple states that support for the previous version of Apple Home ended on February 10, 2026. Check Apple’s Apple Home update guidance for the applicable requirements.
Only consider another hub after identifying what is missing: current Apple Home hub support, Thread capability if the accessory requires it, or a reliable connection to the home network. HomePod and HomePod mini become hubs after setup; an Apple TV must be added to a room. Replacing hardware will not address a mismatched account, weak Wi-Fi, outdated software, or an incorrect network configuration.
