If Task Manager opens in Windows 11 but shows no processes, first check whether the problem is limited to Task Manager or whether the desktop or display is also malfunctioning. The symptom alone does not identify a cause. Try reopening Task Manager and restarting Windows before moving on to shell, display, or system-file troubleshooting.
Check what is actually blank
Note whether Task Manager itself is completely blank, whether its window and navigation are visible but the Processes list is empty, or whether the entire desktop is blank or flickering. Also check whether the taskbar responds and whether other windows display normally. These differences help choose the next check, but none proves a specific cause.
If the problem began after a Windows update, a display-driver change, or installing an application, keep that timing in mind. Microsoft’s guidance on blank Windows screens says a blank screen with a cursor can be associated with a stalled Windows process or a driver issue. Close and reopen Task Manager
Close the blank window, then open Task Manager again. If the window is unresponsive, restart Windows instead of repeatedly opening more copies.

Restart Windows and check for updates
Save your work and restart the PC. Then check Windows Update for available updates and install them if appropriate. Microsoft recommends checking for updates and restarting as general troubleshooting when File Explorer will not open or start; these are sensible low-disruption checks, not a confirmed Task Manager-specific fix. Restart Windows Explorer only if the shell is stuck
If the taskbar, desktop, or other parts of the Windows shell are also unresponsive, restarting Windows Explorer may help restore the shell. This is not a universal repair for an isolated empty Processes list.

- Open Task Manager if it is usable, find Windows Explorer in the process list, and choose Restart.
- If Windows Explorer is not listed, select File > Run new task, enter
explorer.exe, and run it.

Use the display check only when the screen flickers
If the whole display is flickering or scrambled, observe whether Task Manager flickers too. Microsoft says that if Task Manager flickers along with the rest of the display, a display driver is probably involved; if Task Manager does not flicker while the rest of the screen does, an incompatible app is a likely explanation. For a flickering display, Microsoft also documents resetting the graphics driver with Windows logo key + Ctrl + Shift + B. The screen may briefly go black or beep. Repair system files if Windows has broader problems
Consider system-file repair when other Windows features are also malfunctioning, not just because Task Manager appears blank. Microsoft instructs users to run DISM before System File Checker. Open Command Prompt as an administrator, run the commands in order, and allow each operation—especially the SFC scan—to finish:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealthsfc /scannow
DISM can provide files needed for repair; SFC scans protected system files and may replace corrupted files with cached copies. SFC can report that it found no integrity violations, repaired corrupt files, or found files it could not repair. The result helps describe system-file integrity; it does not by itself establish why Task Manager was blank. Microsoft’s System File Checker guidance

Try a clean boot if the issue persists
A clean boot starts Windows with a reduced set of startup apps and services. It can help determine whether startup software is involved. If the problem disappears in that environment, enable items systematically to isolate the cause, following Microsoft’s instructions. Use recovery options cautiously
Do not jump to Reset this PC or reinstall Windows for an isolated Task Manager display issue. If broader troubleshooting points toward recovery, choose the least disruptive suitable option, review what it changes, and back up important files first. What the symptom can—and cannot—tell you
A blank Task Manager may coincide with a stalled process, driver issue, incompatible app, or damaged system files, but Microsoft’s relevant guidance covers those possibilities in broader Windows scenarios rather than establishing a usual cause for this exact symptom. Without details such as the Windows build, recent changes, logs, and whether other parts of the system are affected, the blank window alone is not enough to diagnose the PC.
